This weekend the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and Front Row Motorsports (FRM) are preparing for what is the final road course race of the season at Watkins Glen International. For teams and drivers, road course racing goes against their instincts and thus can create some exciting racing.
Action started Friday afternoon with two practice sessions. Two-time champion Terry Labonte is filling in for Travis Kvapil in the No. 38 Ford while David Gilliland practiced his No. 34 Ford. Both teams were happy with their cars and were just looking for a decent starting spot for Sunday's main event during qualifying Saturday morning.
Labonte was the first FRM driver out for qualifying and put the Long John Silver's Ford in the 43rd position. David Gilliland lost some time through the "bus stop" portion of the course, getting in the grass on his run, but was able to hold on for the 42nd best time. J.J. Yeley, driving the third No. 55 FRM Ford, put in a fast qualifying lap and will start 30th.
Kyle Busch won the pole beating out the Richard Petty Motorsports drivers of Marcos Ambrose and A.J. Allmendiger. It is his eighth pole of his Cup career.
Rain is in the forecast for much of Sunday, but race coverage on ESPN still begins Sunday at 12 p.m. ET. |
