Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a historic racing venue that has hosted many unforgettable racing memories in its 100-plus years, but it has also been the scene of plenty of disappointment. Front Row Motorsports got a taste of that disappointment on Saturday when only one of its entries qualified for Sunday's Brickyard 400.
David Gilliland qualified 37th for the race after the No. 34 team hit on a decent set-up for their Front Row Motorsports Ford. The team had gone back and forth through tight- and loose-handling conditions during the weekend's three practice sessions before running their fastest lap in Saturday afternoon's time trials.
Unfortunately, Gilliland will be the only Front Row entry on the starting grid on Sunday. Travis Kvapil and the No. 38 team failed to qualify for the race -- a tough blow for the team that was just 12 points from returning to the top 35 in owners' points. Fellow Front Row teammate J.J. Yeley, David Stremme, Erik Darnell and Scott Wimmer also failed to make the race.
David Ragan won his second pole of this season and of his career with a lap time of 49.182 seconds at 182.994 miles an hour. Kasey Kahne will start on the outside pole.
Sunday's Brickyard 400 kicks off ESPN's weekly coverage of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Coverage from Indianapolis begins Sunday at 1 p.m. ET. |

Comments from Front Row Motorsports Ford team driver David Gilliland after qualifying at Indianapolis:
"That was actually the best our car has been all weekend. We tried a bunch of different things during practice, and we hit on something pretty good today because that's as fast as we've been since we got here.
"I'm really looking forward to racing on Sunday. Last year we missed the race, and the couple years before that we either didn't run the full race or had the tire issues that one year. So, this will be my first 'real' Brickyard 400 in like four years. I can't wait." |
