From Rev. Debbi
In one of the Children's Times during worship in April, the children were asked "What happens in the Spring?" There were several responses "April showers bring May flowers", "May flowers brings more flowers and then summer", "time for the NHL playoffs", and sadly, there was disappointment expressed about the poor showing of the Red Sox as the team began the new season.
Children have incredible insight regarding the ups and downs of life, the blessings and not so blessed events that take place in each season, and they have an amazing capacity to state the truth as they see it with joy and enthusiasm.
We can learn from the children. May brings on Mother's Day, Pentecost, movements toward graduation and commencements, and, of course, Memorial Day Weekend. Let's learn from the children to celebrate whatever is going on with joy and gratitude to God that we are alive to experience it. As we begin moving our activities at home toward the out of doors, let's open our spirit at the church to new expressions and activities that will stretch us beyond the routine of what we are used to doing.
The Annual Meeting is ahead of us. If you are going off of one commission, consider another commission or committee that interests you. If you have never served on a commission or committee, talk to the pastors and let them help you decide where to serve in the coming year. If you remain on the same commission, re-energize your interest and passion for what you are doing. Let a breath of fresh air invigorate your church work, much like the spirit found new life in the disciples through Pentecost.
The annual meeting is an opportunity for transition, stability, new thoughts regarding church governance and greater insights into the challenges that await us in the new church year.
Stay prayerful, stay joyful, and leap into the newness of spring, breathing in the hope to be found at Eliot.
Rev. Dr. Deborah L. Carter, Interim Senior Minister

From Rev. Karla
Many of you have asked about the Mission Trip, and although you will have the opportunity to hear about it from the youth, I thought that I would give you an edited version of the daily emails I wrote to parents back home. We had a fabulous time, and are so grateful for the support of this congregation.
Monday
Hi everyone,
Wow! What a day we had today. You would be so proud of our youth and how they are truly mission ambassadors of Eliot.
This morning we were divided into two teams, after orientation. A group of us went to an organization called Food to Friends, which provides nutritious meals to people living with AIDS, cancer, and other debilitating, chronic or even terminal illness. With dietitians and professional chefs working together, the food prepared was beautiful, abundant, fresh, and packed with love and care by troops of volunteers.
The second group went to a organization called A Wider Circle, which provides free furniture and household items to people transitioning out of homelessness into housing. The warehouse looked like a retail furniture store, with living room arrangements, kitchen section, etc. This team moved a lot of donated gently used furniture, and helped clients shop for what they need. After we finished, we had a speaker who was formally homeless. His story dispelled a lot of myths about people who are homeless. The kids were riveted and moved.
When we reflected together tonight, the youth shared what they learned--like how fortunate they can have showers when they want, or how important a set of keys to your home are. They learned that 1 in 3 people in America will experience homelessness at some point in their lives. They learned that small kindnesses make a difference (like a cup of coffee given to someone on the street), and that people can be friendly and kind in spite of being a stranger.
...and so, in short, the experiences we had today had a lot of impact. We look forward to more.
The kids are incredibly energetic, inquisitive, thoughtful and respectful. It is such a joy to be with them and among them. They are indeed loving lights of God's presence.
Tuesday
So, dear ones, let's just start tonight's update by me saying "our chaperones are rock stars!!!"
As I type on my tiny iPhone screen, Diane Pullen is washing all of our YSOP t-shirts in the kitchenette sink, by hand, wringing them out, and hanging them to dry. These t-shirts are to be worn all week at our sites, and by day 2 they are beyond ripe. Earl was dishwasher extraordinaire and now is playing cards with some boys like a shark. Andy has been like the energizer bunny--he never stops. He goes running in the morning with a group, he is so positive and always stopping us for impromptu learning moments!
Today was a long day but the kids are still quite lively, playing guitar, and games. This after packing a lot of food bags for Food for Friends, and the other group spent the day with an elderly blind man--cleaning his apartment, listening to his multiple stories, and doing his laundry. In mean not just throwing clothes in, but actually folding underwear, t-shirts, socks and putting them away. (Yes, laundry!) let them fool you!
After our site visits, we then gathered for reflection, and then all three church groups combined to cook dinner for 40 guests who were homeless, lonely, or at risk. The kids sat with our guests, visited with them all evening, and personally served each guest. It was incredibly moving to see our youth chatting it up with people from all walks of life, so comfortable, poised, and respectful.
It's late, but I just wanted to say we had an amazing, learning-filled, compassionate day.
Wednesday
Hi everyone--
It's been another packed and busy day for our trippers. At 7:15 our first team boarded the bus to prepare breakfast for an organization called Thrive DC. In addition to serving daily breakfasts and dinners to those who are homeless or at risk, they offer many outreach programs, such as artistic expression. I am told they cracked 72 dozen eggs and cooked a vat of fried apples with cinnamon and sugar to serve over 180 people.
Our second group journeyed to the DC Foodbank and of course, volunteered for the messiest and hardest jobs. Two of our team volunteered for the strong person team, carrying and moving heavy packed boxes of food to a loading dock. While I was hanging back waiting for the director to ask for volunteers to sort canned vegetables(not messy, not gross, easy) while the rest of the team volunteered us for the goo-iest, dirtiest, grossest job, which was sorting and determining which baking goods were indeed still usable. Imagine bags of rancid flour, leaky sugars, punctured cooking oil, and checking for vermin poop. That's the Eliot Spirit for you!
This afternoon we met Josephine and had a brief visit with Rep. Barney Frank. I think the kids were a bit awestruck to be in his office, and they asked him good questions. Although the time was brief, it was impressionable.
We appreciate all of your prayers and support. We all are experiencing the abundance of God's love with us and among us.
Thursday
Hey all--
Just a brief update tonight--we all got to go to the same site today, DC Central Kitchen. It is a wonderful mission that was founded 15 years ago by a volunteer who wanted to run an efficient kitchen that would use local food producers as much as possible to create economic healthy food to provide to local smaller soup kitchens, after school programs, and shelters. They also train people "at risk" to be chefs. It's pretty amazing!
I have no idea how much cabbage we chopped, tomatoes sliced, onion cut, carrots shredded, sweet potatoes peeled, but I know the fruit of labor created many pounds of coleslaw, garden salad and ingredients for African Stew, but I think it could rival the story of five loaves of bread and fish!!
We are so excited for our visit to the White House tomorrow!
Friday
Hello everyone!
Today we spent the day sight-seeing and hanging out. The White House was fantastastic!
Your children have been wonderful. They trust each other implicitly ( I have seen this with my own eyes--they follow each other anywhere, even when they don't know where they are going and hence, usually are headed in the wrong direction...but then they sense they are missing something and turn around to find us waiting for them.) They get along, they respect and care for one another...sure, they are normal--they have been cranky at times, silly and hilarious always, high energy--complete teenagers--but with something special that is binding. I like to think that binding is the very mystery of God. Indeed, I have no doubt that it is the mystery of God.
See you tomorrow,
Karla

SEARCH COMMITTEE UPDATE
The Search Committee has met, and has started on the formal process of searching and calling candidates to serve as Eliot's next senior pastor. In this respect we are following the established UCC procedure as outlined by the Massachusetts Conference. The co-chairs of the Committee are Cathleen Finn and Susan Nason.
The Committee will be providing Eliot Church members with up to date information on the selection process in two ways:
One) Every month we will update the congregation in the "The Columns" as we are doing now
Two) We have posted a chart on the Transitions bulletin board in the main hall. This convenient UCC prepared poster entitled "What Progress Are We Making in the Search For A New Pastor" outlines the 8 steps we expect to follow.
We have completed Step 1: Search Committee Appointed. Step 2: Preparation of the Local Church Profile, a lengthy document that will provide candidates with much information about our congregation. .A blank copy of the profile form is posted on the Transitions bulletin board. Under the Conference guidelines, it is expected that the entire process should take between 18-30 months. Fortunately for Eliot Church, we have completed some of the preliminary work of defining the church's direction in our recent dialogues on Eliot Church's future. We promise to work diligently to complete the process in a thoughtful way as soon as possible. We hope to have the profile completed by September 1.
We wish to remind everyone that as a search committee we are charged to complete our work in a confidential manner. For this reason we prefer that interested persons rely on these communication tools, and refrain from seeking out additional information from individual Search Committee members.
Respectfully,
Michael Benn .

FORUM - May 13, 2012
There will be a forum on May 13th after church, facilitated by Marge O'Reilly from the Interim Leadership Development Committee (ILDC). This Forum will focus on the recommended new governance for the Eliot Church, giving everyone an opportunity to hear the recommendation and to discuss the various options presented in the recommendation. Following your input at the forum, the recommendation involves moving toward a modified one board governance structure, keeping all the commissions in place. The recommendation went from the ILDC to the Coordinating Council for review, and then back to the congregation through the forum, and the final recommendation will be made by the Coordinating Council at the Annual Meeting on May 20th. |
ANNUAL MEETING
The Annual Meeting will be held on May 20th, following the worship service at 11:30 AM. The Annual Reports will be presented, as well as the proposed budget for FY 2012-2013. We will also be voting on the By-Law changes, the proposed governance structure, and hear an update on the search process. More information will be coming regarding the Annual Meeting, but this is a "Save the Date" announcement and an encouragement to attend |

Eliot Office
As you all know Terri Whitney Jackson is no longer Eliot's office manager. Before refilling that position on a permanent basis, the Parish Staff Relations is taking a look at the position, including duties, responsibilities and work schedule. While that is happening, Loretta Hurney has been hired to fill the position on a temporary basis. Loretta worked for many years as a legal assistant and bookkeeper at a Newton law office and brings many skills to Eliot. Loretta is in the office Monday - Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you are sending an e-mail to the office please use Loretta@eliotchurch.org or office@eliotchurch.org address. And if you are in the building, please stop by and introduce yourself to Loretta. Lastly, a very big thank you to Sui Wai Stroshane for helping out in the office during this transition period.

THANK YOU FROM TERRI WHITNEY-JACKSON
To the Staff, Members and Friends of Eliot Church
Dear Friends,
I so enjoyed worshipping with you on April 22nd; although the occasion was sad, the celebration was truly joyful.
Thank you for your generous gift and your generous words of Farewell. You are a wonderful, caring congregation, made up of wonderful, caring individuals. I count myself blessed to have been part of your lives for so many years. I have loved watching your children grow and mature, been touched by your love for each other; and have felt your love for me. You have given me so many wonderful opportunities to see God working in your lives, which has made it easy to see God working in mine. I will treasure the times when you came by or called, just to chat. You have held me in the palm of your hand when my own life presented challenges, and I don't think I would have come out on the other side had it not been for you.
My Eliot Church model has a place of honor on my mantle, as do your gifts and cards.
May God be with you till we meet again,
I love,
Terri Whitney-Jackson |
