Hi  !

There's lots happening this week!

Come join us!
This Sunday, April 18, 2010
Next week is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.  This  Sunday we will focus on Care for Creation in our worship service.  We will also celebrate the Baptism of Katherine Umenhofer.  The choir will offer an anthem by L.S. Spevacek, Fanfare for All Seasons.  Pastor Tony will reflect on Genesis 1:11-25 and Matthew 6:25-33 in his sermon, Touch the Earth Lightly.

There will be no Sunday School Sunday because of April vacation week.  Childcare will be available for infants and toddlers.   Children 5 and up should stay in worship. There will be activity pages available at the Welcomers tables in the narthex and in the hallway.

Adult Forum Following Worship
Various Rituals & Traditions Regarding Holy Communion

There are various ways that Christians celebrate the Lord's  Supper and receive the bread and cup: grape juice or wine? passing plates of bread and small cups of juice? coming forward to receive the bread and juice from a worship leader?  gathering around the table and serving each other?  drinking from the cup, or dipping the bread?  We come from many different traditions, and each of these practices has a history with special significance for some of us.  During the 11:30 am Adult Education Forum after worship this Sunday,  we will learn more about these practices, and discuss how we here at Eliot might be enriched by them.

Eliot's Ministry as a Teaching Parish for Seminary Students

For several years, our congregation has served as a field education site for Andover Newton seminarians. As part of this ministry, one of the pastors has been a trained supervisor, and a lay committee has volunteered as a Teaching Parish Committee ('TPC') to work with the seminarian on their learning goals during the field education experience.  Last year, the Field Education department asked if Eliot's seminarian (Emilia Halstead), supervisor (Pastor Tony), and Teaching Parish Committee (Carolyn Clark, Chris Stuart, Nancy Lane and Barbara Couturier) would make a training DVD to help train other congregations and TPC's in the field education ministry for seminarians.  The DVD is now complete, and will have its debut showing at Eliot after worship next Sunday.  This is an opportunity to learn more about how seminarians are trained in practical ministry, and how a Teaching Parish Committee functions.

Remember Our Youth Group on Mission

Eight Eliot youth and four chaperones are leaving this Saturdayfor a week-long mission trip to Appalachia.  Please hold them in your thoughts and prayers this week.  We'll look forward to hearing about their experiences and adventures when they return!

Sacred Conversations

Would you be interested in joining Pastors Tony and Karla for a few weekly gatherings for prayer and conversation about what matters most in our lives?  We would like to invite a group to meet weekly for 4 to 6 weeks later in the spring at a time that is mutually convenient.  If you would like to join us, please let either of us know.  - Tony and Karla

Prayer Box

Did you know that Eliot Church has a drop-in Prayer Box at the parking lot entrance?  It invites those who come through our doors to write their prayers and place them in the box.  We share those prayers on Sunday morning, and pass them on to members of our prayer circle to remember during the week.

UCC Goes Viral:  The Language of God

The national UCC is launching an internet ad campaign with a new clip called "The Language of God".  It will be released Friday morning at 9:00, and then all UCC-ers are invited to post the ad on their FaceBook, Twitter, and MySpace accounts, and to send the ad link to their friends.  Let's join in spreading the news that the language of God is love, and that all people are loved, no matter who they are or where they are on life's journey!

Pledge Season

During the month of April, we will launch our annual pledge campaign to fund the ministries and programs of our congregation for the coming year.  Pledge Sunday will be May 2.  Watch for further mailings and emails.  Thank you from the Finance Commission.

Be Sure to Return Your Census Form!

This is a reminder of the importance of completing and mailing in the 2010 U.S. Census form that you received in the mail in March. The 2010 Census provides information that each community relies on to obtain their share of more than $400 billion in federal and state funding distributed each year for health assistance, services for older adults, employment services, schools and more. A low return rate in Massachusetts could also result in the loss of Congressional seats. Starting May 1, Census workers will be going door to door to households from which a return has not been received - each contact required adds to the cost of conducting the Census. So please send in your census form and encourage others to do so as well.

If you can't find the form that was mailed to you and you live in Newton, you may call the Local Census Office at 781-577-2930 or pick one up on the Greeters' Table in the hallway.

If you need help filling out your Census or have any questions, a Census representative will be in the Chapel from 9:00 am - 12:00 noon Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, April 13, 14 and 15.

Walk for Hunger
Sunday, May 2

On Sunday, May 2, a tiny but titanic team from Eliot will be participating in Project Bread's 2010 Walk for Hunger to represent the mission and social justice passion and tradition of  the Eliot Church.

Would you like to join us?  Could you support us?   So far, Doug and Chris Stuart are signed up-this is Chris' 25th  Walk for Hunger!!!  You can sign up to be a virtual walker, which is how Karla Miller is currently registered.

As you know, Eliot Church is the half-way point of the 20 mile walk-a major water stop- and this event is extremely important for our church community. Our own David Castillo-Gocher will be presenting a bombastic organ recital at 11:30 a.m. for the walkers.

Visit the Team Eliot page to learn more:

http://www.projectbread.org/goto/eliotchurchnewton

From there, you can join Team Eliot, make a contribution to the team or to an individual.  Thank you for considering sponsoring Team Eliot, and for your support of hungry people.
