This Sunday, February 28, 2010
Worship this Sunday, the Second Sunday in Lent will be a Service of Healing Prayer.
With a time of Prayers for Healing with Laying on of Hands.  There will be prayer circles which you may join.  One of the leaders will ask you to share your prayer concern, and those at the station will place their hands on your head and shoulders and pray.  Prayers may be for healing of mind or of body, for things of a spiritual nature, or for relationships that stand in need of healing.  Prayer requests may be for yourself or for someone else.  All are welcome

The Chancel Choir will feature the Anthem "Wondrous Love", as arranged by Parker/Shaw.

Pastor Tony will reflect on Acts 5:12-16 and Luke 5:12-26 in his sermon, "Healing Prayer".

Adult Forum
Creating an Eliot Church Timeline.
Following worship, at 11:30 in the Parlor,  join seminarian and Eliot intern Emilia Halstead for an exciting hour of historical rendering of the life of Eliot Church of Newton as recalled by YOU, that's right you.  We will discover together how each of us situates ourselves within Eliot's history in addition to the broader context of local, denominational, national and global history.  We may uncover links and shifts between levels of history that are new discoveries for all!  So bring your stories and memories to what promises to be an enlightening hour, as well as a heap of fun!

Next Sunday, March 7

Adult Forum:  Ensuring a Vibrant Future for Eliot

Join us in the Parlor at 11:30.  There will be an opportunity at this forum to explore and develop an additional option for addressing Eliot's fiscal situation and strengthening the church community based on the common themes identified through the dialogues.  This forum will be facilitated by the Task Force and will be held in the chapel at 11:30-1:00 pm (coffee hour will be held in the parlor).  Even if you did not attend one of the dialogues, come, participate, and hear what Eliot members have been deliberatively, lovingly and thoughtfully discussing about Eliot's future.

Tuesday, March 9

Coordinating Council meeting
based on the dialogue input and the March 7th forum, the Coordinating Council will meet to discuss an alternative option, if necessary, to present for discussion and vote, along with the initial four options at the Congregational Meeting.

A Reminder:  This Coordinating Council meeting is open to all members of Eliot (as are all CoCouncil meetings).

Sunday, March 14,

Special Congregation Meeting and Vote
In the Sanctuary immediately following Worship Service

This is an important meeting as the Coordinating Council will be presenting a motion to be voted on by the congregation which will include all four of the original options originally made in October by the Fiscal Responsibility Committee and any alternatives by the Coordinating Council.  It may also include an additional option which is a culmination of all the feedback from the dialogues.

Lenten Potluck Supper & Study Series - Spiritual Practices in Everyday Life

Have you ever thought of walking on the earth as a spiritual practice?  Or how you live in your own body?  Or saying "No!" Or hospitality?  Or resting? Or recycling?

Some thoughtful and articulate Christian teachers have described how each of these "disciplines" can be profound spiritual practices for everyday Christians.  Join Tony, Karla and Emilia every Wednesday evening during Lent, through March 24, to reflect more about, and perhaps learn to enter more deeply into, these spiritual practices of our everyday lives.

The potluck suppers will begin at 6:30 and the programs at 7:30.  If you would like to come to the potluck, but need a ride, please contact Carol Brown or Susan Nason of the Spiritual LIfe Commission (SLC).  If you are planning to come to one or more of the potlucks and could provide a ride to someone, please also let Carol or Susan know that.  The SLC wants to ensure that everyone who wants to be a part of this Lenten sharing and learning time has the opportunity to do so.

Women's Coffee

This week on Wednesday, March 3

A group of Eliot women gather for coffee and conversation at the Starbucks on Soldiers Field Road on the first Wednesday of every month.  All women welcome!  Allison Stoner is the coordinator, and sends out an email reminder. If you would like to be on the list, contact Allison at allisonstoner@hotmail.com or 617-527-4018.

Welcomers Needed for March!

This is an important ministry that takes little time, but has a big impact.  What do Welcomers do?  Come to church by 9:45, greet folks as they come to the service and hand out bulletins, take up the collection, and help to ensure that newcomers in particular are made to feel welcome and comfortable.  We all have been newcomers at one time or another and how we are greeted can have a big impact on how we feel about our experience.  This is one of the ways that each of us at Eliot can strengthen the growth and outreach of Eliot.  We try to have four Welcomers every Sunday.  Thank you from the Spiritual Life and Membership Commissions.

Flowers Needed for the Altar!

You may give them to honor a special person or occasion in your life.  You can give flowers of your own choosing or the committee can get flowers for you.  On Communion Sundays, if you would like to honor a loved one or special occasion, we place them on a pedestal under the bible lectern.  The committee needs your help!  See the sign up sheet in the hallway, send Terri WJ an email office@eliotchurch.org  or call Elizabeth Woodbridge at 617-924-2048.

Benefit Concert for Haiti Earthquake Relief

Tomorrow evening, Monday, March 8 7:30 pm

at First Baptist Church in Newton, 848 Beacon St.  Newton Centre.  The Duke University Chorale will present an Evening of Joy and Generosity.  For more info, see the church's website: www.fbcnewton.org.

Men's Breakfast

A group of Eliot men gather every Wednesday morning in the church parlor for bagels, coffee and stimulating conversation.  Larry Schafer is the gracious host, and he also sends out email reminders and notices when there's a change of schedule  All menfolk are welcome! If you would like to join them, occasionally or regularly, contact Larry at  l.a.schafer@rcn.com or  617-965-9888.

Snow & Event Cancellation Policy

Since pastor Tony can walk to church, we have never cancelled a Sunday worship service, and probably won't.  However, there are times when we may wish to cancel Sunday School, Chancel Choir, Children's Choir, and other planned programs.

Since most of the congregation is connected by email, we will use the Eliot Email list to "get the word out" about cancellations.  For major events, an all-church email will be sent by 8:00am, as well as separate emails for special groups - e.g. the choir, church school families, etc.  We will have a special message on the church telephone answering machine announcing the cancellations (also by 8:00am).

If you don't have email at home, or would prefer to get a telephone call (rather than email message) if a cancellation might affect you, please call Terri Whitney Jackson in the church office at 617-244-3639 ext. 201 or send her an email at office@eliotchurch.org and asked to be put on the phone contact list.
