Hi  !

We've got lots of exciting things happening this week!

Come join us!
This Sunday, February 21
Worship this Sunday, the First Sunday in Lent
Our Section Leaders will present "O Jesu Ducis Memoria" by T.L. de Victoria.  Pastor Tony will reflect on Deuteronomy 26:1-11 and Luke 4:1-13 in his sermon "Christ In Our Story".

Eliot Church History Forum
In our adult education hour this Sunday, we will tell more of the story of the Tottori Church, and other significant events in Eliot Church history.

This Sunday is the last day for collections for the Confirmation Class Project, Soles4Souls.

Two of our confirmands, Rachel Hargreaves and Gaby Mata have been collecting shoes for Soles4Souls, a Nashville-based charity that collects shoes from the closets of people like us, and distributes them to people in need, regardless of race, religion, class, or any other criteria. Since 2005, Soles4Souls has given away over 5.5 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes (donating one pair every 9 seconds in over 125 countries.)  And, they are committed to sending 1 million shoes to Haiti.

So clean out your closets and bring your shoes to church - consider it a Valentine gift for your soul!

Next Sunday, February 28

Next Sunday we will have a Healing Service

Next Sunday's Worship will include a Service of Healing Prayer.  The Sunday worship service on February 28 will include a time of Prayers for Healing with Laying on of Hands.  There will be three prayer circles at the front and back of the sanctuary.  You may join any of the circles at any time during this prayer period.  One of the leaders will ask you to share your prayer concern, and those at the station will place their hands on your head and shoulders and pray.  Prayers may be for healing of mind or of body, for things of a spiritual nature, or for relationships that stand in need of healing.  Prayer requests may be for yourself or for someone else.  After your request has been prayed for, you may return to your pew or remain in the prayer circle.  If you wish to remain in your pew, you may use this time to pray for those in the prayer circles, and for others.

Adult Forum:  Creating an Eliot Timeline

During our adult education hour,

join seminarian and Eliot intern Emilia Halstead for an exciting hour of historical rendering of the life of Eliot Church of Newton as recalled by YOU, that's right you.  We will discover together how each of us situates ourselves within Eliot's history in addition to the broader context of local, denominational, national and global history.  We may uncover links and shifts between levels of history that are new discoveries for all!  So bring your stories and memories to what promises to be an enlightening hour, as well as a heap of fun!

Lenten Potluck Supper & Study Series:  Spiritual Pracices In Everyday Life
Wednesday Evenings beginning at 6:30 pm

Have you ever thought of walking on the earth as a spiritual practice?  Or how you live in your own body?  Or saying "No!" Or hospitality?  Or resting? Or recycling?

Some thoughtful and articulate Christian teachers have described how each of these "disciplines" can be profound spiritual practices for everyday Christians.  Join Tony, Karla and Emilia every Wednesday evening during Lent, from February 24 through March 24, to reflect more about, and perhaps learn to enter more deeply into, these spiritual practices of our everyday lives.

The potluck suppers will begin at 6:30 and the programs at 7:30.  If you would like to come to the potluck, but need a ride, please contact Carol Brown or Susan Nason of the Spiritual LIfe Commission (SLC).  If you are planning to come to one or more of the potlucks and could provide a ride to someone, please also let Carol or Susan know that.  The SLC wants to ensure that everyone who wants to be a part of this Lenten sharing and learning time has the opportunity to do so.

All Church Karaoke Party
Friday, February 26, 7:00 - 9:00 pm

Bring your friends!  We have hired a professional DJ  to host a Karaoke Party for our congregation!    This is an outreach event, designed so that you can invite friends to something fun at Eliot.   This is NOT JUST FOR CHILDREN only!-our DJ has one of the best collections of oldie goldies to top 40 and beyond.   Admission is free, although we hope that you bring a buddy or two as your "ticket" in!  There will be prizes-for most friends brought, for funniest act, for bravest singer, etc.    The youth mission trippers will host a refreshment table of drinks/snacks for suggested donation prices.  So come on out-have FUN-invite someone to join you-and support the youth!  It's a triple play!  Sponsored by Membership Commission, CE Commission, and Youth Mission Trip!

Flowers for the Altar Needed

Would you give them to honor a special person or occasion?  You can give flowers of your own choosing or the committee can get flowers for you.  On Communion Sundays, if you would like to honor a loved one or special occasion, we place them on a pedestal under the bible lectern.  The committee needs your help!  See the sign up sheet in the hallway or call Elizabeth Woodbridge or call her at 617-924-2048 with your questions.

Welcomers Needed

Welcomers are needed for March - this is an important ministry that takes little time, but has a big impact.  What do Welcomers do?  Come to church by 9:45, greet folks as they come to the service and hand out bulletins, take up the collection, and help to ensure that newcomers in particular are made to feel welcome and comfortable.  We all have been newcomers at one time or another and how we are greeted can have a big impact on how we feel about our experience.  This is one of the ways that each of us at Eliot can strengthen the growth and outreach of Eliot.  We try to have four Welcomers every Sunday.  Thank you from the Spiritual Life and Membership Commissions.

Snow & Event Cancellation Policy

Since pastor Tony can walk to church, we have never cancelled a Sunday worship service, and probably won't.  However, there are times when we may wish to cancel Sunday School, Chancel Choir, Children's Choir, and other planned programs.

Since most of the congregation is connected by email, we will use the Eliot Email list to "get the word out" about cancellations.  For major events, an all-church email will be sent by 8:00am, as well as separate emails for special groups - e.g. the choir, church school families, etc.  We will have a special message on the church telephone answering machine announcing the cancellations (also by 8:00am).

If you don't have email at home, or would prefer to get a telephone call (rather than email message) if a cancellation might affect you, please call Terri Whitney Jackson in the church office at 617-244-3639 ext. 201 or send her an email at office@eliotchurch.org and asked to be put on the phone contact list.
