Church Family News
Greetings!

We've got some very exciting things happening at Eliot Church this month, and we'd love to have you be a part of them!

Breaking News - Christmas Pageant Rescheduled for Sunday, January 3 at 4:30pm

Join us this Sunday afternoon at 4:30 pm for our annual Christmas Pageant!  Directed by John Bassett, "An Amazing Story"  featureds all of our beloved players in the story of the birth of Jesus.  This will be a wonderful opportunity to savor the Spirit and Joy of Christmas before we go back to work and school!

Greetings from Pastor Tony

Eliot Friends,

I hope everyone had time for family, fun and reflection during the Christmas season.  May we enter the New Year with hope in our hearts, faith in God's goodness, and a readiness to embrace whatever gifts the new year brings.  All time is God's time.

For us here at Eliot, the new year will definitely bring challenges and opportunities.  We are starting the year with a series of dialogue opportunities for all our members and friends, to discuss and eventually make decisions about how we approach our financial future as a congregation.  (read the article for the details)  We hope that every active member and friend of Eliot will attend one of these dialogues forums.  The discussions may not always be easy, but this is a wonderful opportunity for each of you to help shape Eliot's future.

During 2010, we are also hoping to develop and offer more opportunities for Adult Education on Biblical, spiritual and theological topics.  The biggest challenge has always been time - finding a time to meet in people's packed schedules.  We are hoping to use the 11:30 -12:30 hour after worship on Sundays more frequently as an adult education hour.

With a prayer for abundant blessings in the New Year,
Pastor Tony

Greetings from Pastor Karla
A Little Help from My Friends
It's the first day of a New Year, and it is the time when we make all those wonderful resolutions, well meant but seldom well kept.  It was the Babylonians of 4000 years ago who had the notion that a new year ought to be a time for personal renewal and self-improvement. Their new year was in the spring.  We have the Romans to thank for setting the calendar with which we are familiar.  They named the first month after the Roman god, Janus, who had two faces, one looking backward and one looking forward.  And that is what we all tend to do at this time of year.  The news shows have been full of lists of the Ten Best movies, or the most important people of the year, or the most significant photographs, and of course the most important stories of the year, one of which you all lived through four months ago.

What will last year mean for this year?  We send each other wishes for the New Year, hopes that all will be healthy and happy, and that the world will be a more peaceful place. I imagine those thoughts were with the Babylonians as well, if in a bit different form.  They weren't worried about spending too much time on the Internet, for instance, but some things, such as repaying debts or returning what we have borrowed or treating people better, go beyond time and place.

So what do we think of when we contemplate New Year's Resolutions?  According to the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, the top 11 resolutions are:

Get a better job-I'm not sure if this means more lucrative or more meaningful-I suppose it could be either

Be a better person-I find this one especially interesting.  How do we do that?  Perhaps we should continue with the list and see if it draws any conclusions for us.

Lose weight-The Today Show claims this is in fact the number one resolution among Americans.

Stop smoking-that's always a good choice, but probably one of the hardest to stick to.

Spend less money-in this culture of plastic cards (credit, debit, special store cards), it can be very easy to forget that actual money is being spent!

Exercise more-That's on my list every year.  Last winter we even bought an exercise machine for our house, but I still face the same dilemma-finding the time to use it.

Improve health-many of the others on this list could have this effect.

Get closer to God-Ah, finally.  The inner life is addressed.  But just at number 8?

Stop drinking

Be kinder to others

Go back to school

So here is my confession!  My friend and colleague Martha shared this essay with me a few weeks ago, and gave me permission to lift it. Although I couldn't write it as well, she articulates my inner thoughts well.   My New Year's Resolution is to accept help from my friends more often this year, freeing up more space to focus on my relationship to God.

What about you?   What are your resolutions this year?

Ensuring"Ensuring a Vibrant Future for Eliot:  Dialogues on Fiscal Options"

An Invitation

In response to findings and recommendations of the Financial Responsibility Committee (FRC) and a vote of the congregation on October 18, 2009, the Eliot Church of Newton will be convening deliberative dialogues in January and February 2010 to prepare for budget decisions at the March 14, 2010 congregational meeting.  These dialogues are open to everyone in the Eliot church community and will cover a variety of options for addressing Eliot's fiscal issues and strengthening the church as we move further into the 21st century.   We hope that every active member and friend of Eliot will attend one of these dialogues.

At the dialogue forums, participants will consider several "approaches," or potential action plans, and will be asked to weigh the costs and benefits of these potential action plans, with the ultimate goal of reaching common understanding, and a common direction to take in response to the financial issues.  Participant comments will be anonymously recorded to capture the essence of each forum.  These records, in addition to participant surveys, will be summarized and distributed to church members at a March 7th congregational forum to prepare for the March 14th congregational meeting on the FY 2011 Eliot budget.

The dialogues will be facilitated or "moderated" by Eliot Church members who will not advocate a specific point of view or solution, but provide participants with a broad range of choices to consider.  The moderators will use a nonpartisan discussion outline prepared to guide the deliberation and educate participants on the issue.  Dialogues will be held in the homes of Eliot members (TBD).  Light refreshments will be served.  The dialogue dates and times are as follows:

Saturday, January 16th at 3:00 - 5:00 pm

Sunday, January 17th at 3:00 - 5:00 pm

Wednesday, January 20th at 7:00 - 9:00 pm

Saturday, January 23rd at 3:00 - 5:00 pm

Eliot Exploration
Saturday, January 9 from 10:00 - 11:30 am
Sunday, January 24 after worship at 11:30 am
If you are interested in learning more about Eliot Church,  our history, our ministries, our denomination, the United Church of Christ, and about church membership, then join us for a two part series, Explore Eliot!

The first part of the series is a Pastor's Class, on  Saturday morning, January 9th, 10:00-11:30.  This class will give you the opportunity to learn more about history, structure, and style of our congregation and our denomination, the United Church of Christ.  We will also provide information about becoming full members of the congregation, for those who wish. Even if you aren't interested in church membership at this time, we would love to have your presence with us.  Childcare can be provided.

The second part of the series is hosted by the leaders of the church--either chairs or members of different commissions.  This is a wonderful opportunity to gain an overview of all the events, activities, and ministries our congregation undertakes.  This will happen after worship, 11:30,  on Sunday January 24th.

For those of you interested in joining the church, we have scheduled Membership Sunday on February 7th.   We hope you can join us! Email Pastor Karla for more information.

"Mission" Slogan/Statement Contest

HOW would you describe Eliot Church in ten words or less?  Your membership commission is looking to you, the congregation, to submit ideas and slogans that we might use as our "mission" tag line.   A mission statement should be brief, hopefully catchy, and capture who we are and why we exist.  For example, one congregation's mission statement is "Becoming the Beloved Community".  Another congregation's statement is "Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors".    Some of the "mission" statements from the UCC national campaign include, "Ancient Faith, Fresh Perspectives", "God is Still Speaking", and "No matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here."   What words or statement do you think will capture the spirit and community of Eliot Church?  Submit your ideas to Karla Miller, or Fred Balfour; or write them on the bulletin board by the church office.  There is also a prize-a Kiva Micro-Loan credit that you can use to invest in small businesses/entrepreneurs  in the developing world!  See www.kiva.org for more information!

Mission & Social Justice Commission

CMS Thanks!
Santa's helpers loaded over 35 bags and boxes into the car, which were brought to the City Mission Society's distribution point in Winchester.  The gifts filled all the seats and the trunk. On Christmas you all should reflect on the joy you have brought to so many; including the greatest gift - letting folks know that someone cares about them.

Thank you all again - Patrick O'Reilly for the Mission & Social Justice Commission

Summer 2010:  Opportunity to Meet the Chipego Women of Hope in Zambia

Would you like to meet our partners, the Chipego Women of Hope, in Zambia this summer?  Communities Without Borders (CWB), the Newton organization linking us to the women, is sponsoring two trips in the summer of 2010; and members of Eliot are invited to go. Consistent with CWB's approach, the emphasis will be on human connection as well as education and related issues.

CWB is having an introductory meeting for all potential summer 2010 travelers to Zambia on Thursday Jan. 7th at 7.30 at the Union Church on Beacon St. in Waban. If you might be interested in this unique and often life-changing trip, you an learn more at this meeting.  If you are unable to attend, you can email Dick Bail or email Brita Gill-Austern for information. Deposits are due in January.

Background:
Given the November service and related announcements about CWB, you may already know that the Chipego Women of Hope care for 70 AIDS orphans and other vulnerable children by preparing meals and seeing that the children go to school. For 30 of the children, Eliot provides $100 a year to cover school fees, books and uniforms. Through a recent "Alternative Giving" event, members of Eliot also contributed funds to help rebuild the station where the children eat every day.

CWB supports over 1,000 children in nine communities in government schools.  It also supports a similar number of pre-school children through Family Support homes run by groups of women in the partner communities.  Click here for more info

Music Notes

It was indeed the "Most Wonderful Time of the Year." I hope that everybody enjoyed the choir's musical Sunday featuring anthems that we all love such as "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming," "Oh Holy Night," "Do You Hear What I Hear," etc... I once again thank my faithful choir for their hard work and commitment to our music minister together. This year (2009) the choir presented two masterworks, the Schubert Mass in G and the Rutter Requiem, and over forty special anthems during worship. This is the best time of the year to join the choir! We have even more wonderful music scheduled for next year (2010), and we would love welcoming new members. Music experience is NOT required to join the choir. We have a skilled music staff that is more than willing to make choir accessible to everyone.
