Greetings! Happy St. Patrick's Day!
"Feeling Lucky?"
Its time once again for our annual "Seek and Find" contest. So let me ask...are you feeling lucky?
Our three websites, www.autohausva.com, www.autohausifind.com and www.autohausclassics.com are chock full of valuable information regarding Sales, Service, Extended Service Contracts, Financing, Vehicle Locating Services, High-Performance Vehicle sales, and so much more! Hidden somewhere within the text of those three websites we have placed the words "Feeling" and "Lucky?". These two lucky words could be on any one of the multiple pages of our websites so you have to look carefully. If you are one of the lucky customers who finds the words "Feeling" and "Lucky?" simply send an email with their exact locations (including website name, page name and location on page) to Rob Carpenter, Marketing Manager, at rob@autohausva.com. The lucky few who find the two words will be entered into a drawing where one random entry will be chosen to receive a Garmin Portable GPS device for their vehicle. The drawing will be held April 1st, 2011 from all eligible entries received. Only one entry per person please. Thanks for playing and GOOD LUCK!
Sincerely,
Hans Hohlrieder
President

GIVE YOUR VEHICLE A BRAKE!
Wear and tear happens, so give your vehicle a brake (pun intended). Over time, brake systems wear out and some parts need repair or replacement. As it is with most vehicles, there are common complaints regarding vehicles brake systems that we hear over and over. Some complaints are minor and don't need immediate repair while others indicate a much more serious issue. Each of these complaints has a cause and a correction that Auto Haus can diagnose and repair. Read on and see if you recognize any of these problematic symptoms in your vehicle.
Brake Noise When you apply your bakes, brake noise can be an indication of a cheaply made brake pad or it can tell something more sinister is happening. Brake pads come in different composites and grades, which will affect overall brake noise. A good rule of thumb in buying brake pads is "you get what you pay for". The cheaper the cost, the cheaper the pad. A cheaper brake pad will wear out quicker and cause more brake noise than a more expensive pad. Cheap pads have a higher metal content and less friction materials, which causes more noise. In older vehicles and most Asian brands, brake noise can also be an indication that your pads are worn out to the point that your vehicle's metal wear indicator is hitting your metal rotors causing a squeal. This squeal means you need new pads immediately and the car is not safe to drive. Most European brands of vehicles have electronic wear indicators that notify you with a dash indicator if your brakes are worn. At Auto Haus, we carry the recommended Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) quality brake pads for your vehicle, as well as, more expensive, less dusty, but possibly more noisy, ceramic pads.
Brake Dust on Wheels Brake dust occurs as a result of your brake pads wearing down. Microscopic bits of the brake pad material are sheared off every time you apply your brakes. This causes a fine powdery substance to fly off the pad surface and attach to your brake components behind the wheel and more obviously, to your wheel surface itself. Over time, brake dust will corrode the surface of your wheels and ruin their glossy finish. As it is with brake noise, brake dust is more prevalent when using cheaper brake pads than it is when using more expensive ones. Cheaper pads break down quicker and make more dust. More expensive OEM and ceramic pads produce less brake dust and will last longer too. All brake pads will create some level of dust so its important to wash and even wax your wheels regularly with a quality wheel cleaner and wax.
Brake Pedal Pulsation When you apply your brakes do you feel the pedal pushing up and down, or pulsating, beneath your foot? If you do, this is more often than not an indication of some irregularity in your braking system. Usually, this irregularity is warped brake rotors, which means they will have to be resurfaced or replaced. Most high-end vehicles like we sell have vented brake rotors for increased performance, but vented rotors cannot be resurfaced and must be replaced if they are warped. So what causes a rotor to warp? As rust and corrosion grow between the rotor and hub, they can separate the two, pushing the rotor out and creating runout, uneven wear and pedal pulsation. Proper inspection and a clean mounting surface between the hub and rotor are key to eliminating pulsation.
Brake Pad/Rotor Wear Increased power and performance of vehicles in response to customer demand coupled with pressure to reduce weight for emissions and fuel economy has placed even more emphasis on brake performance. A move by manufacturers toward larger rotors, increased service area of pads and more aggressive braking systems is a result of the adoption of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 135. That standard "requires vehicles equipped with hydraulic and electric service brakes and parking brake systems to ensure safe braking performance under normal conditions and emergency conditions" and creates an environment for increased component wear that must be serviced properly. Given the extreme conditions under which modern brake systems operate, premature or irregular wear both result from a failure to fully and properly restore the brake system to its proper operating condition. Proper restoration usually takes more than a quick pad change. Replacing all appropriate hardware, refinishing or replacing rotors as per manufacturer specs and cleaning and lubricating sliding surfaces and pins as appropriate will allow the system to function properly under the most severe loads. However, driving patterns also play a part. Brakes on one vehicle may last substantially longer if the owner drives it easy or takes more highway trips. If the same owner overloads the vehicle, makes short, stop-and-go trips or leaves his foot on the brake pedal, the pads inherently will have more wear and failures. Brake Performance
Proper break-in period and technique can greatly affect the performance of new braking components. Yet not all OE manufacturers require break-in. As always, it is best to follow the individual component manufacturer's recommendation. A proper burnishing or break-in of the friction material and rotor surface will enhance brake performance, reduce noise and give the best life possible for the pad materials installed by mating the two surfaces together to allow proper heat dissipation and transfer of film from friction material to the rotor surface. Another cause of performance issues is old or inadequate brake fluid. The importance of always using a high quality fluid with a high dry boiling point rating cannot be underestimated. As the brake system operates, heat is generated and transferred into the hydraulic system as it passes through various components. In addition, moisture from the environment enters the system, contaminates the fluid and decreases the boiling point. By flushing fluid at the manufacturer-recommended interval, moisture contamination is removed and the proper boiling temperature is restored.
At Auto Haus, we have all the tools, equipment, parts, and technical expertise necessary to diagnose and repair your braking system to optimal safety and performance. DON'T TAKE ANY CHANCES, GET YOUR BRAKE SYSTEM CHECKED BY AUTO HAUS TODAY! |
