Featured Project: Graphic Standards Manuals

Graphic Standards Manuals

We've all heard the saying, "the devil is in the details." For graphic designers, details can make all the difference. Who wants to design a killer logo just to have it ruined later in production? Graphic Standards Manuals exist to assure graphic designers that their creative juices won't be mishandled after the project has been handed off to someone else. Colors, sizes, fonts, alignment, proportions, backgrounds - everything is covered and parameters are set. Third-year students get first-hand experience in, first, creating a logo, and, next, perfecting all the details surrounding that logo.

Bethany MertensGraduate of the Month

Bethany Mertens, BFA '10

Graphic Artist at Voss Lighting in Lincoln, NE

http://vosslighting.com

High School:
Parkview Christian High School in Lincoln, NE

What does the company do? Voss Lighting is a supplier of specialized replacement lighting products, with offices in 16 different cities in the USA. We have customers that range from business and industry to schools and government agencies. We educate our customers about how much impact the choice of lighting makes on the economics and efficiencies of a business.

What does the graduate do?
I work on mostly printed materials and business cards to help aid the sales department. However, our company is changing, and I have been working on images and documents that work on iPads. I also do a lot of non-profit print work for churches, and design gospel tracts.

Clients: I work in-house, but we do a lot of non-profit work for churches. Voss is also starting a social movement with a main focus on teaching people how to share the gospel. So, I have been working on logos and pitching ideas. It started with the logo, but we want to create a website and a social media site soon.

Comments: My job is not anything like what I thought I would be doing when I got out of school. It is different from most design jobs we learned about. I am working for a company that I believe in. I get to serve the Lord every day at work, and I never have to compromise on my beliefs. I love what I do, not just because I get to design, but also because I love the people and what the company stands for.
