Improving the World by Eating Dinner

Scott WilliamsIn spite of frequent bickering, spilled milk, and a crowded table, my parents made it a point for our family of seven to eat evening meals together.  I did not realize at the time that we were participating in one of the more constructive activities families can do.  Numerous research studies show that when families regularly eat together four or more evenings per week the children have better academic performance, are less likely to do drugs or be depressed, and develop healthier eating habits.  They also tend to have better social skills, happier marriages, and closer family ties.  Who would have thought such a normal family activity would have such an influence?  Read more here.

CFS Wins Soccer Tournament
Soccer-DBThe Knights scored the only goal of the game in double overtime to beat North County Christian School 1 - 0 and win the CFS Soccer Tournament.  Danny Brugmann scored the winning goal and goalkeeper, Dalton Caldwell was credited with the shutout.  The eight team tournament began Friday, September 25.  The Knights won their first two games, in double overtime, but due to rain, the championship game could not be played the following Saturday and was postponed to Friday, October 2.  With the win, the Knights are making plans to extend their season by entering a national tournament in Dayton, TN during the first week of November.
Math Teachers Workshops

Three CFS teachers are participating with Columbia Public School teachers in the STACK math grant program. STACK, Supporting Teachers - Amplifying Children's Knowledge, was designed to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics by increasing students' proficiency in mathematics and improving long term retention of concepts.  Mrs. Redelfs, Mrs. Grimes, and Mrs. Beaird are attending a Saturday meeting each month and will participate in a two-week summer seminar.

Student Highlights and Activities
Nathaniel Duker, 12th grade, has been nominated by Principal Scott Williams as a candidate for the U.S. Senate Youth Program. The program is sponsored by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation and is highly selective with only two students from each state chosen to participate. Winners will be notified in November and receive a $5,000 college scholarship and a week-long, expenses paid trip to Washington D.C.  "Nathaniel has the credentials, experience, and abilities to be an exceptional candidate for this program," said Mr. Williams.
