THE MIND/BODY CONNECTION AND YOUR SKIN

Today, many in the medical community now accept that emotional, mental, social, spiritual, and behavioral factors can directly impact our health. In terms of how the mind/body connection can affect the state of our skin, many now believe that chronic stress can lead to skin's premature aging. allergiesTHINK YOU MAY HAVE ALLERGIES?

Did you know that Sacramento is consistently ranked as an allergy "hot spot" (a challenging place to live for those who have allergies) by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America? The incidence of allergies has been on the upswing since the early 1980s due to a number of factors, including climate change, increased pollution, and a more sterilized living environment.

Do you think you may have allergies? Allergic symptoms can include nasal congestion and sneezing; itchy, runny nose; scratchy throat and itchy, watery eyes; and coughing and wheezing.

What can you do to reduce allergy sympt
oms? While there is no cure for allergies, they can be managed with proper prevention and treatment.  Ways to help control your allergy symptoms include the following:

  • Try to minimize outdoor activities when pollen counts are at their peak. You can find your city's allergy forecast at Pollen.com.
  • After spending a lot of time outdoors, change your clothes when you come inside.
  •  Keep your windows shut on bad air quality days, and consider using an air conditioner with a good filter.

While these avoidance techniques will help, they will not prevent all symptoms.

If you suspect you may have allergies, we can help you feel better. We use the most recent advances in medical science to make the diagnosis and treatment of allergies easier, more accurate, and more convenient for you. Long term relief is available through immunotherapy, either by injections (shots) or sublingually (drops) to lessen your body's response to allergens in the environment.

ARE MP3 PLAYERS DAMAGING YOUR HEARING?

Does it seem like everywhere you go-the gym, the grocery store, and the mall-people are wired in to their iPods or other MP3 players?

If you use one of these portable music players, or if you have a friend or family member who does, have you ever wondered how they may affect hearing? The answer depends on how long and at what volume people choose to
listen.

With the players that are available in the United States, the sound levels can exceed 120 decibels, comparable to the level of noise produced by a jet engine. Research indicates that listening at this maximum level can lead to risk of hearing damage after 7.5 minutes of exposure.  Noise induced hearing loss such as this can be deceptive because it develops slowly and may take a number of years to show up.

What is a safe volume level to listen? The research varies on this. According to research done by Corey Portnuff, of University of Colorado at Boulder, the typical person can listen safety to an iPod for 4.6 hours a day at 70% of volume using stock earphones. Others researchers are more cautious, and say that until more research is done, users should err on the side of lower volumes.  Newer iPods can be set automatically to limit maximum volume. According to Laura Johnston, Doctor of Audiology and Director of SENT Hearing Aid Center, a good rule of thumb to follow is that if you are listening to your iPod and can't hear the person next to you speaking, the volume is too loud.

MINDBODYTHE MIND/BODY CONNECTION AND YOUR SKIN

Most of us are aware that the leading cause of premature aging of the skin is exposure to the sun. There are other environmental factors, such as repeated wind exposure, that can also cause premature aging of the skin by depleting it of its moisture.

Today, many in the medical community now believe that chronic stress can also cause skin to age prematurely.
Some researchers link this to elevated levels of cortisol. Cortisol is a necessary hormone, but  when we are under chronic stress, the adrenal glands overproduce it, which can lead to a variety of problems.  Heightened cortisol levels lower the ability of the skin (which is the largest organ in your body)  to regenerate, contributing to wrinkles, drying, and sagging.

What can you do to reduce stress and its effects on your skin?

  • Make sure you eat a healthy diet
  • Get plenty of sleep (the skin regenerates itself at night)
  • Exercise (which will improve your circulation and the blood flow to your skin)
  • Consider trying relaxation techniques, including yoga and meditation
  • Appropriately use moisturizers, exfoliating agents, and sunscreen to help maintain a healthy glow

There are also many surgical and nonsurgical options available for improving the look of your skin and your overall appearance. Our board-certified facial plastic surgeons,      Dr. Philip Bernstein and Dr. Donald Clutter, use the most current and advanced methods available to perform the complete spectrum of facial plastic surgery as well as minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, including laser skin resurfacing, laser skin tightening, and injectable fillers. Our laser skin resurfacing services, using the state-of-the-art Palomar laser, are particularly effective in rejuvenating aged and weathered looking skin.

We also offer a full range of aesthetic services at our Folsom office  to help your restore a youthful glow to your skin.
