Notes from the Cellar

As I juggle my wine glass, a notepad, the tasting brochure and a pen, all the while trying to keep my customers' preferences in mind, I begin to have mixed feelings about the tasting format used by the distributors to showcase their wines for store buyers.  On the one hand, there are literally hundreds of wines to sample, many of them high-end selections that the sales reps don't bring around during their normal course of business.  On the other hand, with so many choices it's essential to stay very focused on the needs of our store, and not become distracted by "exciting" wines that won't resonate with my buyers here in Beverly.

After each tasting I try to sit back and think:  What trends did I see emerging this year?  Is South America still hot?  Has Australia rebounded?  And what about price point -- has the recession left its mark?

This year I see two consistent themes:  variety and value.  Wine lovers are more open than ever before to new regions and varietals, especially if it means drinking great wine at a great price.  Brand loyalty is becoming a thing of the past as customers recognize that the best wine can come from the most obscure sources, and a big name could just mean a big advertising budget.  Throughout the fall I will continue to fight my way to the front of the tables, in search of new and intriguing discoveries for Henry's Wine Cellar.

Facebook update:  227 fans and counting.

Celebrating the Season:  Octoberfest

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3rd from 2 PM to 5 PM

Our first annual Octoberfest celebration will feature beers from local favorite Samuel Adams.  Not just a tasting -- we're talking about a party.  A tent outside in the parking lot will extend the amount of space available for our devoted beer lovers, while a spread of foods from Henry's Market -- including all the necessary grilled sausages, cheeses and other goodies to make our Octoberfest really authentic -- will be served.

Bob Cannon, brewer for Sam Adams and something of a local celebrity -- he is featured in the breweries television ads -- will join us as we sample a wide array of beers, including seasonal specialties.  Read "10 Questions for Bob Cannon" at www.winetalk.org.

Mark your calendars, and stay tuned for further details.

New Arrivals:  Wine

DOMESTIC

2008 Montinore Borealis; Willamette Valley, Oregon ($12.99)
Biodynamic Farming:  "This wine was born of a desire to capture the incredible aromatics and flavors of our cool climate white varieties in one expressive white wine.  It pours a pale gold, and grapefruit, pineapple and fresh flower aromas leap from the glass.  On the palate a crisp, fresh entry is balanced by succulent ripe fruit flavors of peach, grapefruit and quince, culminating in a fresh, lingering finish."  A blend of 60% Muller Thurgau, 23% Gewurztraminer and 17% Pinot Gris. www.montinore.com

2006 Bogle Phantom; California ($21.99)
"Three distinctive varietals combine lush berry and fierce spice into a wine characterized by its incandescence. Deeply luscious and succulent blackberries ignite this vintage of our rich ruby apparition. Aromas of anise and sweet fig are embraced by touches of black pepper. From the shadowed dark depths, subtle notes of cloves and vanilla emerge and compliment the concentrated fruit characters of this wine."  49% Petite Sirah, 49% Zinfandel 49% and 2% Mourvèdre.  www.boglewinery.com

2007 Beringer Chardonna
y Napa; Napa Valley, California ($17.99)
"Beringer's Chardonnay vineyards span several sub-appellations in southern Napa Valley; the cooler vineyards to the south produce grapes with crisp apple, pear and citrus characteristics, while vineyards closer to Yountville yield Chardonnay with a rich texture, and tropical fruit and pineapple aromas and flavors. Winemakers Ed Sbragia and Laurie Hook chose complementary lots from each of these vineyards to craft a wine that exhibits bright fruit, richness and complexity."  www.beringer.com

2007 Beringer Pinot Noir Napa; Napa Valley, California ($24.99)
"The wine has a dark ruby-garnet color with aromas of cherry, raspberry, strawberry, sweet orange, rose water, anise and spice. This Pinot Noir has a ripe, lush fruit mouth of fresh picked sweet red cherries and strawberries, a bright backbone and supple tannins." - Laurie Hook, Winemaker

2006 Elyse Zinfandel Morisoli Vineyard; Napa Valley, California ($37.99)
"The old vines, volcanic soil, Rutherford Bench terroir and field blend always create a truly distinctive Zinfandel. Dark ruby colored, it has inviting aromas of wild berries, mocha, dried herbs and hints of bacon and strawberry preserves. On the palate, flavors of raspberries, blackberries, cola, plum compote and toffee lead to a pleasingly lush texture. This wine shows layers of gorgeous fruit with a deep, underlying complexity that is so characteristic of this vineyard."  www.elysewinery.com

IMPORTED

2007 Domaine Reverdy Sancerre Les Coutes; Loire, France ($27.99)
Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate 88 points:  "This smells pungently of lemon, peppermint, and nettles. Almost shockingly bright and suffusing the palate with faintly bitter citrus oil and herbal concentrate, it boasts a finish that will leave you sucking air through your puckered lips and saying "wow!" Plug into this source of electricity over the next 18-24 months."

2008 Domaine Saint Damien Cotes du Rhone Vielles Vignes; Southern Rhone, France ($17.99)
The 2008's have not yet been reviewed; Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate 90-93 points in 2007:  "The 2007 Cotes du Rhone Vieilles Vignes, which could easily pass for an outstanding Chateauneuf du Pape is a blend of 90% Grenache and the rest Syrah and Mourvedre and possesses superb intensity as well as a sweet perfume of kirsch liqueur, licorice, lavender, and soil undertones. Deep and full-bodied with terrific texture, stunning richness, and a long finish, this brilliant Cotes du Rhone can be enjoyed over the next 4-5 years."

2005 Corte alla Flora Vino Nobile di Montepulciano; Tuscany, Italy ($19.99)
"Pours a bright ruby red.  Intense and fragrant notes of raspberry, sweet violet and blackberry, with nuances of vanilla and coffee  The red fruit notes echo on the velvety palate, which offeres nicely balanced acidity and tannins. A wine of substantial body and structure, it has great character and is highly suitable for aging."  www.corteallaflora.com

New Arrivals:  Beer

Thomas Hooker Octoberfest Lager; Connecticut
Our rich and satisfying Bavarian-style OctoberFest comes from a special blend of imported German malts that creates a full-bodied brew and stresses a malty flavor and lingering aroma. Gently hopped and delicately balanced, its true-to-style, slow fermentation and long, cold maturation produces a luxuriously smooth, award-winning brew.  5.8% abv.  www.hookerbeer.com

Atlantic Brewing Bar Harbor Coal Porter; Maine
A superb porter, hearty & dark. This one is a staff favorite, made with pale, crystal, Munich, chocolate, and black malts. The darker malts give Coal its color and rich flavor. We use Target and Willamette hops to yield a very subtle hop flavor in this porter. We cellar this beer for close to six months before releasing it on the thirsty throngs of fans. 5.8% abv.  www.atlanticbrewing.com

Stone Vertical Epic 09-09-09; California
Annual Release:  Best described as a Belgian style Imperial Porter. The beer is deep brown, with intense roasted character provided by chocolate malt. During the brewing process, we also added dark candi sugar, vanilla bean, and tangerine peel to complement the flavors of the porter. The vanilla bean addition is fascinating, as it actually enhances the chocolate character from the roasted malts, and the candi sugar adds a nice hint of molasses flavor to the finish. We aged this beer on French Oak chips, which contributes a smooth and subtle woody undertone and even more vanilla flavors. www.stonebrew.com
