Notes from the Cellar

This is an exciting time for Henry's Wine Cellar; you will be pleasantly surprised and possibly even impressed to see some of the outstanding new events announced this week, with many others happening on a regular basis throughout the fall. As I'm sure you realize, very few large liquor stores have special events like the ones we are offering, let alone small wine shops. Rarely are they done free of charge, especially on the scale we are planning. We are working hard to develop relationships in the wine business so that our customers can enjoy the fruits of those labors.

Wine is the sort of field where things are always changing, so as a wine lover I am always learning -- tasting, reading, meeting with winemakers and importers, etc.  I expect to further expand my wine knowledge over the course of the next two months, and I hope you will be there to learn with me.

Facebook update:  192 fans and counting.

Tasting this Week

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 3rd from 4 PM to 7 PM

2008 Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc; Marlborough, New Zealand ($17.99)
Wine Spectator 91 points "Smart Buys":  "Fragrant and complex, with a refreshing burst of lime, guava, grapefruit and grass flavors. Wet stone, passion fruit and oyster shell accents add interest, with bright acidity highlighting the vivid finish. Another outstanding Sauvignon from a perennial success. Drink now."

2008 Jean Luc Colombo Viognier La Violette
; France ($14.99)
Tasting Notes:  100% Viognier.  A very elegant, aromatic and harmonious white wine, a great alternative to Chardonnay. Its freshness allows the fruit to fully develop, with intense aromas of acacia, yellow peaches and exotic fruits.

2008 Fattoria La Striscia Chianti; Tuscany, Italy ($10.99)
See below under "New Arrivals".

2007 Green & Red Vineyard Zinfandel "Chiles Canyon"
; Napa Valley, California ($24.99)
Handpicked Selection:  Named for its red iron soils veined with green serpentine, Green & Red Vineyard is located in the steep hills on the east side of Napa Valley. The wine is a blend from our three mountain vineyards which overlook Chiles Canyon, characterized by dark cherry and raspberry notes with tinges of sage and clove. 2200 cases produced. www.greenandred.com

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 5th from 2 PM to 5 PM

2008 Pomelo Sauvignon Blanc; California ($12.99)
Wine Spectator 87 points "Best Value":  "Vivid passion fruit, lime peel, guava and quince flavors are refreshingly juicy and light-bodied, with good focus and a distinctive mineral note. Drink now.

2008 Domaine de la Pepiere Muscadet Sevre et Maine sur Lie; Loire, France ($14.99)
Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate 89 points:  "Smells of fresh lime, along with a greenhouse-like amalgam of flowers and foliage. Green apple, raw almond, and lime are joined by faintly bitter suggestions of salad greens, making for an unusual, and irresistibly refreshing but by no means insubstantial palate impression. Enjoy this over the next 12-18 months."  Muscadet is certainly one of the great underrated wine regions of France, and possibly the best wine in the world for oysters.  100% Melon de Bourgogne.

2007 Tenuta Sant'Antonio Scaia Rosso del Veneto
; Veneto, Italy ($14.99)
Handpicked Selection:  This aromatic, food friendly red offers notes of red rose and violet balanced by fruity notes of cherry, plum, blackberry, currant and raspberry. The wine is medium-bodied, balanced and fresh.  100% Corvina.  www.tenutasantantonio.it

2006 Dominio IV Technicolor Bat
; Oregon ($22.99)
Winery Notes:  This fascinating red blend offers notes of dark fruit, cherry, cassis, chocolate, and black licorice. It's an unexpected blend of 82% Tempranillo (the grape used in Spanish Rioja) and 18% Syrah.

Wines offered during the tastings will be discounted 10%.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 14th from 6 PM to 8 PM

The names Marilisa Allegrini and Leonardo LoCascio are familiar to anyone who loves Italian wine; Allegrini is an important Italian wine producer from the Valpolicella area, and LoCascio is a leading importer of fine Italian wines under the Winebow umbrella. Now imagine these two powerhouses joining forces for two Tuscan wine projects.  This a tasting opportunity you will not want to miss.

In 2001 Allegrini and LoCascio founded Poggio al Tesoro, a beautiful estate in the celebrated area of Bolgheri, located in the upper Tuscan Maremma. The perfect quantity of sunlight throughout the year, the proximity to the sea, and the uniqueness of Bolgheri's terroirs are reflected in the style of Poggio al Tesoro's wines; ripeness, muscular body, and richness are effortlessly combined with complexity and elegance.

In 2007 the ambitious duo acquired San Polo, situated in the exclusive territory of Montalcino. The vineyards at San Polo are managed with an eye towards environmentally sound and sustainable agriculture practices. In their commitment to make San Polo one of the leading estates in Montalcino, Marilisa and Leonardo have hired winemaker Carlo Ferrini, currently one of the leaders in Italian winemaking.

Joining us for the tasting event will be Robin Shay, Market Manager for the Americas for Allegrini, San Polo, and Poggio al Tesoro.  Robin has chosen a select group of wine stores in which to debut the Poggio al Tesoro and San Polo wines in the U.S.

Interested in learning more?  There will be another email with more details coming soon.  You can also visit Winebow's website at www.winebow.com

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3rd from 2 PM to 5 PM

Our first annual Octoberfest celebration will feature beers from local favorite Samuel Adams.  Not just a tasting -- we're talking about a party.  A tent outside in the parking lot will extend the amount of space available for our devoted beer lovers, while a spread of foods from Henry's Market -- including all the necessary grilled sausages, cheeses and other goodies to make our Octoberfest really authentic -- will be served.

Bob Cannon, brewer for Sam Adams and something of a local celebrity -- he is featured in the breweries television ads -- will join us as we sample a wide array of beers, including seasonal specialties.  Read "10 Questions for Bob Cannon" at www.winetalk.org.

Mark your calenders, and stay tuned for further details.

HENRY'S VALUE PICKS, all under $15

2008 Kilda Chardonnay; Australia ($10.99)
Steven Tanzer 87 points:  Light yellow-gold. Fresh melon and green apple aromas are deepened by a gentle brown spice note. Light-bodied orchard fruit flavors pick up a tangy lemony quality with air, which adds verve and backend cut. Easygoing and straightforward Chardonnay with good energy for the money."

2007 Arboreto Montepulciano d'Abruzzo; Italy ($9.99)
New York Times "Wines under $20".  Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is the sort of juicy, mellow red wine poured in trattorias throughout central Italy, served with pasta, grilled sausages or aged cheese. This one is medium-bodied and generously fruity, but with surprising structure.

2007 Colonia las Liebres Bonarda
; Argentina ($9.99)
Wine Spectator 87 points "Best Value":  "A thoroughly delicious red, with mouthfilling plum and sweet spice flavors backed by a long, juicy, well-rounded finish. The good dash of grip should help it this stand up to summer's grilled foods. Drink now."

DOMESTIC

2006 Peter Franus Zinfandel Brandlin Vineyard; Mt. Veeder, Napa Valley, California ($32.99)
Winery Notes:  Medium ruby in color, the aromas offer blueberry, allspice, and black cherry notes, made more complex by that Brandlin terroir of mineral and earth. Toasty French oak integrates and elevates the nose, while enhancing the structure and tannin profile of the wine. This is a vibrant, lively, and refreshing wine that invites another glass, and perhaps even a third!  A blend of 92% Zinfandel, with Charbono, Mourvedre and Carignane.  1000 cases produced.  www.peterfranus.com

IMPORTED

2008 Mollydooker Shiraz The Boxer; Australia ($29.99)
Limit 1 per customer.  Wine Spectator 91 points "Smart Buys":  "Bright and jazzy, offering an effusive mouthful of cherry, pomegranate and spice flavors that are as aromatic as they are long and vivid. This has density without great weight, and the finish keeps on going. Drink now through 2015."  Winery Notes:  With aromas of blueberry, raspberry, violets, cedar and tobacco, it has a kaleidoscope of flavours that explode in your mouth with layers of blackberry, licorice, and spicy sweet fruit. Super-rich and opulent with a lingering finish of dark fruit and vanilla-oak. There's a reason everyone asks for The Boxer by name. Incredible power and purity.  Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate 93 points in 2007. www.mollydookerwines.com.au

2008 Mollydooker Two Left Feet; Australia ($29.99)
Limit 1 per customer.  Winery Notes:  Consistently one of our top-rated Lefty wines, this blend has superb aromas of butterscotch, plum, white chocolate, cherries and raspberry. Its big, unctuous texture and incredibly dense, spicy fruit give you a wonderfully rounded mouth-feel and a silky smooth finish. As in years past, the mouth-filling texture gives this wine a very long finish. Delicious!  A blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate 93 points in 2007:  "The 2007 Two Left Feet is a blend of 68% Shiraz, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 15% Merlot aged in 50% new oak for 11 months. A glass-coating opaque purple, it offers up a complex aromatic array of violets, scorched earth, smoke, black cherry, and blueberry. On the palate it is full-bodied, layered, and concentrated, with loads of spicy, savory blue and black fruits, silky tannin, and a very long finish. It will continue to unfold for another 1-2 years and drink well through 2017."  www.mollydookerwines.com.au

2008 Domaine Ott Rose "Chateau de Selle" Cru Classe; Cotes de Provence, France ($44.99)
Winery Notes:  A serious rose, this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Cinsault is fruity and spicy, with notes of apricot and grapefruit, complimented by complex herb nuances. Renowned as one of the world's finest rose wines, the inland estate is perched on chalky hills, and enjoys many hours of sunshine for rich, luscious grapes.  Hand picking, a highly selective grape sorting process, and a delicate pressing are just some of the ways in which the Chateau de Selle differs from your basic rose wine.  Extraordinarily food friendly.  www.domaines-ott.com

2008 Fattoria la Striscia Chianti; Tuscany, Italy ($10.99)
Finding a good Chianti -- one that compliments everything from your favorite Sunday all-day pasta sauce to Friday's take-out pizza -- is all about knowing your importer.  Ideal Wine consistently brings us well-priced gems from small producers, so we have learned to trust their recommendations. The downside?  There are seldom comprehensive tasting notes, so we are offering the wine for tasting this week.
New in Stock:  Beer

The seasonal releases continue to arrive -- and the weather is growing suitably cooler.  Enjoy!

Southern Tier Pumking Imperial Pumpkin Ale
; New York (22 oz.)
Brewery Notes:  Pumking is an ode to Púca, a creature of Celtic folklore, who is both feared and respected by those who believe in it. Púca is said to waylay travelers throughout the night, tossing them on its back, and providing them the ride of their lives, from which they return forever changed! Brewed in the spirit of All Hallows Eve, a time of year when spirits can make contact with the physical world and when magic is most potent. Pour Pumking into a goblet and allow it's alluring spirit to overflow. As spicy aromas present themselves, let its deep copper color entrance you as your journey into this mystical brew has just begun. As the first drops touch your tongue a magical spell will bewitch your taste buds making it difficult to escape. This beer is brewed with pagan spirit yet should be enjoyed responsibly. 9.0% abv.  www.southerntierbrewing.com
Henry's Humidor:  Cigar of the Week

Macanudo Gold Label Tudor Capa Especial ($10.50)

Macanudo Gold Label is available only once a year and features a silky golden wrapper that gives the cigar its name.  As the best selling brand in America, Macanudo is known for its mild flavor and body as well as its consistency.  Handcrafted with golden wrapper leaves from the first and second primings of Macanudo's specially grown Connecticut Shade crop, Macanudo Gold Label cigars are blessed with a natural sweetness. The wrappers are elegantly thin, yet remarkably supple with fine veins. Their texture is especially smooth, without a hint of graininess. "Capa Especial" is the Spanish term for this wrapper of uncommon taste which, when combined with filler and binder tobacco of complementary character, results in a cigar that lives up to the tradition of quality that is Macanudo.
