Notes from the Cellar

Our golfing customers, among others, have expressed an interest in finding a great source for their post-game cigars.  Henry's Wine Cellar offers an outstanding selection of cigars in our bank-vault-turned-humidor, making Henry's your one-stop shop for summer sports and entertaining. This week we are highlighting a special cigar, with tasting notes and information just like we offer for wines.

By the way, I was happy to see so many new faces on our Facebook "fans" page.  I guess it's time for me to start writing on the wall!

Tasting this Week

THURSDAY, AUGUST 6th from 4 PM to 7 PM

NV Gruet Brut Rose; New Mexico ($17.99)
Handpicked Selection:  New Mexico may not immediately come to mind when you think of "wine country", but it will once you taste this delightful sparkler.  Made in the methode champenoise -- just like expensive imported Champagne -- the Gruet is delicately fruity and very refreshing. It has a lovely, bright floral bouquet with hints of strawberry, raspberry, and cherry. On the palate, it is rich and fruity in a dry, Brut style. The flavor of berries continues on the palate, revealing more strawberry, raspberry and cherry notes.  www.gruetwinery.com

2007 Trevor Jones Chardonnay Virgin;
Australia ($17.99)
Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate 90 points.  Winemaker Notes:  "For twenty years I have been producing my unique style of Chardonnay. This wine continues my philosophy of crafting a pure Virgin Chardonnay from free run juice that exhibits great depth of herbaceous fruit flavours without oak maturation. The delicate characteristics of peach, melon and passionfruit, combined with subtle complexity gives this wine its renowned pedigree. With a full-bodied structure and delicate crisp finish. This wine is ideal with seafood and poultry."  www.kellermeister.com.au

2008 R Wines "Bitch" Grenache;
Australia ($12.99)
Tasting Notes:  A translucent brick red, with pink hues. The aromas are almost candied, with balancing notes of cinnamon and spice. The sense of sweetness continues through to a medium-bodied palate, which burst with berries and subtle earth notes. 100% Old Vine Grenache.  A Grateful Palate import.  www.gratefulpalateimports.com

2007 Chateau de Rieux "Riussanelle" Minervois;

WEEKLY SPECIALS

The Marselan -- a varietal most people have never heard of, but our customers have embraced -- continues for another week.  It is joined by two of the popular Michael Pozzan selections we sampled a few weeks back.

2007 Domaine Sallies Marselan; France (reg. $11.99, special price $9.99)

2006 Michael Pozzan Zinfandel
; Napa Valley, California (reg. $17.99, special price $14.99)

2007 Michael Pozzan Pinot Noir; Carneros, California (reg. $17.99, special price $14.99)

HENRY'S VALUE PICKS, all under $15

2007 Almira "Los Dos"; Campo de Borja, Aragon, Spain ($9.99)
Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate 86 points. A bright cherry red color with violet hues, the Los Dos has a pleasantly intense and complex aroma of subtle fruit and balsam.  Full, well-structured and lingering on the palate, this wine pairs well with red meats, fish with sauce and various cheeses.  A blend of 85% Old Vine Garnacha (Grenache) and 15% Syrah.  A Winebow Selection.  www.winebow.com

2007 Hermanos del Villar "Ipsum"; Rueda, Spain ($11.99)
Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate 87 points: The 2007 Ipsum is 60% Verdejo and 40% Viura raised in stainless steel. Medium straw-colored, it delivers aromas of peach and apricot with a hint of citrus in the background. This leads to a wine with a solid core of ripe fruit, very good balance, and a fruit-filled finish.

2007 Clayhouse Vineyards Adobe White; Central Coast, California ($14.99)
Handpicked Selection:  The Adobe White is a proprietary blend with a golden straw color, and fine floral notes of orange blossom and rose petal. Pear and apple aromas, and a varietal Chenin Blanc character, are also apparent. The full mouthfeel is rounded out by the structure of the Roussanne. The finish is crisp, but balanced with a bit of residual sugar. The mouthwatering fruit flavors are of red apple and stone fruit.  www.clayhousewines.com

DOMESTIC

2006 Canard Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Estate; Napa Valley, California ($34.99)
Boutique Selection:  Farmed with a sustainable approach, and dry-farmed to create smaller than normal Cabernet Sauvignon fruit of exceptional quality. On the nose this wine shows rich, ripe black cherries and black berries with hints of tobacco, rose petals and clove. The palate is consistent with the nose while adding intense depth, elegance, a rich mid palate and a very long soft tannin finish. 927 cases produced.  www.canardvineyard.com

2007 Dowsett Family Gewurztraminer Celilo Vineyard; Columbia Gorge, Washington ($24.99)
Wine Enthusiast 92 points "Editor's Choice":  "These vines were planted in 1984;  they are dry-farmed with all-natural acids, most unusual for Washington State.  So you have a beguiling mix of aromatic, lightly soapy, perfumed, floral scents, matched to exotic passion fruit and grapefruity citrus.  There is a lot of acid here, and it's a young wine, but it has wonderful concentration and a full-throttle mix of perfume, fruit and flesh.  The finish seems endless, and promises a long life ahead.  www.dowsettwines.com

2007 Dowsett Family Devotion Red Wine; Columbia Valley, Washington ($29.99)
Wine Enthusiast 89 points:  "A Chateauneuf-style, ruby red blend of 52% Syrah 26% Mourvèdre and 22% Grenache. Lots of spice and black pepper to complement the bright red fruits. Still very young and not-quite resolved; the aromatics have a fresh cut lumber smell, though very little new oak was actually used in the wine. Give it some time to knit together, or decant well before drinking." www.dowsettwines.com

2008 Foxglove Chardonnay; San Luis Obispo, California ($22.99)
2008 reviews not yet available; Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate 90 points in 2007, 2006 and 2005:  "Perhaps the great value in Chardonnay in the marketplace today, this wine, made by the highly talented Varner Winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains. With malolactic blocked but with lees stirring, this cuvee provides terrific notes of tropical fruit and poached pear in a fleshy, medium-bodied style with obvious minerality and precision. This is a remarkable effort that is fresh, lively, and best drunk over the next 1-2 years."

2006 crU Pinot Noir Two Vineyards; Monterey, California ($32.99)
Handpicked Selection:  "Delicate garnet in hue, this is textbook Monterey Pinot Noir. Cola. black cherry and dark oak all come screaming through at first whiff, with classic varietal flavors of cherry, forest floor and mushroom, with a meaty/earthy character framing everything. Red cherry is fruit accented by tightly structured tannins highlighting the tactile impressions of this nicely proportioned wine.www.mariposawine.com

IMPORTED

2008 Ottella Lugana; Italy ($15.99)
Handpicked Selection:  One of the most scenic wine regions in a very scenic country, Lugana sits on the border between Lombardy and the Veneto on the south end of beautiful Lake Garda, where the fertile Po Valley plain rises into Northern Italy's lake country and the glacial foothills of the Alps. This elegant alternative to Chardonnay is medium-bodied and crisp, with richly-textured fruit and a long, dry finish. Try it with seafood.  100% Trebbiano di Lugana. www.idealwine.us

2006 Chateau Lynch Bages
; Pauillac, Bordeaux, France ($85)
Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate 92 points:  "1988 or 1995-ish in style, rather than 1996, which seems to be the vintage several 2006s recall, this dense purple-colored wine displays sweet notes of creme de cassis, tobacco leaf, licorice, and some cedar and graphite. The wine has plenty of structure a la 1995 and a backward, muscular personality, but beautiful fruit on the attack and alluring purity and a nicely textured mouthfeel. The finish suggests cellaring for 3-5 years and drinking over the following two decades."

2007 Haut Peyruguet;  Entre-Deux-Mers, Bordeaux, France ($12.99)
Value Selection:  Worthy Bordeaux at this price point?  Yes, if you explore some of the lesser-known regions. This blend of 60% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc starts with a satisfying deep red color in the glass. The light, fruity bouquet offers notes of black and green peppers and green plums.  Intense and straightforward on the palate, it is a supple and easy-to-drink wine with a nice dry finish.

2008 Chapoutier Cotes de Rhone Belleruche Blanc; Southern Rhone, France ($10.99)
Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate 88 points in 2007:  "The medium-bodied 2007 Cotes du Rhone Belleruche blanc is a crisp, fresh, lively effort displaying a Chablis-like minerality as well as citrus notes. It is best drunk over the next 1-2 years."  A blend of White Grenache, Clairette and Bourboulenc.  www.chapoutier.com
Henry's Humidor:  Cigar of the Week

Rocky Patel "The Edge" Maduro Toro  ($7.95)

The Edge is made in  Honduras,  wrapped in a Nicaraguan maduro, a binder from Mexico, and filler from Nicaragua and Panama (as well as the other classified location.)

It starts up with a rich burst of classic maduro flavors- a little sweetness, a little char- and quickly transitions to a smooth but full flavored smoke.  It's a medium to heavy bodied cigar, but it's not a brontosaurus. On the other hand, it's not a stick to be fired up on an empty stomach either.

The Edge is a fine cigar, and the maduro in particular is a tasty and attractive after dinner selection. Try one with a stout or espresso.

At Henry's Wine Cellar we hope to provide you with outstanding service and selection, competitive pricing, and exciting special events.  Let our beautiful new store be your neighborhood wine shop.
