2008 Sacha Lichine "La Poule Blanche"; France ($11.99)
Handpicked Selection:  This pretty, summery white offers a fruity nose of peach, grapefruit, bananas and mango on a well-balanced palate. A delicately wooded finish rounds out this blend of 45% Chardonnay, 29% Sauvignon and 26% Viognier.  www.sachalichine.com

2008 Montes Sauvignon Blanc; Casablanca Valley, Chile ($11.99)

"2007 Sacha Lichine "Le Coq Rouge; France ($11.99)

2008 Layer Cake Shiraz; Australia ($17.99)
Winemaker Notes:  "Dark, dense and creamy, complex aromas of black plum, Bing cherry, blackberry and pepper merge with licorice, tobacco, mocha and dark chocolate.  This is one inky Shiraz; an explosion of dark, super ripe, wild blackberry, with a touch of cigar box finishing with a mélange of exotic spices. A pure fruit bomb...complete from attack through a long, lingering finish."  www.layercakewine.com

HENRY'S VALUE PICKS, all under $15

2007 Alois Legeder "Riff" Pinot Grigio; Tre Venezie, Italy ($14.99)
Finally, a Pinot Grigio with body and flavor, yet light enough to be refreshing on a hot summer day.  The complex mineral backbone of this wine reflects the alluvial soil found in the foothills of the Dolomites, a part of the Alps rich in limestone made of fossil deposits left by an ancient ocean ("Riff" is German for reef). It's lively and refreshing with aromas of citrus and spice.

2007 Guidobono Nebbiolo;
Piedmont, Italy ($12.99)
Violets and roses on the nose, rich fruit on the palate, and a long, fine finish. This complex red comes from the Langhe, the area surrounding the famous communes of Barolo and Barbaresco. Much like Pinot Noir, Nebbiolo is sensitive to micro-climate and expresses its terroir faithfully, making this a delicious cousin of the big Piedmont Nebbiolo wines at a fraction of the price.  www.idealwine.us

2005 Domaine Houchart Cotes du Provence Rouge
; Provence, France ($12.99)
Owned by the Quiot family of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine Houchart is situated at the foot of Mont Saint-Victoire near Aix-en-Provence. This bright red offers classic Provencal aromas of dried cherries, sun-roasted herbs, pepper and pulverized limestone. Crisp, spicy and tantalizing on the tongue, expanding toward a gently structured richness of velvety texture and succulent, savory finish. A blend of Grenache, Carignan, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.

IMPORTED

2008 Montes Sauvignon Blanc; Casablanca Valley, Chile ($11.99)
New York Times Three Stars:  "Crisp yet rich and deep with lingering flavors of herbs, lime and minerals."  Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate 87 points:  "Offers aromas of grapefruit, lemon-lime, and fresh cut grass, followed by a vibrant, crisp wine with good balance and length."

2005 Cheeky Chick Peepers Blend; Australia ($12.99)
Wine Spectator 87 points:  "A bit firm, but the juicy, peppery plum and berry flavors take over, lingering on the open-textured finish. Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier. Drink now through 2009. 2,000 cases made."

DOMESTIC

2005 Buoncristiani O.P.C. Proprietary Red Wine; Napa Valley, California ($44.99)
Wine Enthusiast 95 points "Editor's Choice":  "Just gorgeous. Floods the mouth with decadent black currant, cherry, chocolate, anise, beef jerky and smoky oak flavors that stun for their addictive deliciousness. Yet it's perfectly dry, and the balance of rich, ripe tannins, acidity and smoky oak is near perfect. The wine is a blend of Bordeaux varieties and Syrah, from esteemed vineyards including Hyde, Stagecoach and Caldwell.  A blend of 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Syrah, 15% Merlot and 7% Malbec."  www.buonwine.com

2005 Abundance Vineyards Abundantly Rich Red; Lodi, California ($17.99)
Winery Notes:  "This rich blend of old California varietals Zinfandel and Carignane leaves nothing to the imagination. This wine is loaded with intense fruity aromas of Bing cherries, plums and blackberries in contrast with chocolate and toasty aromas contributed by the judicious use of oak barrels. The mouth feel is full with soft, ripe tannins, and the finish is long and almost sweet without being sugary."  www.abundancevineyards.com

2006 Saxum Syrah Booker Vineyard
; Paso Robles, California ($91)
Wine Spectator 94 points:  "Bold, ripe, intense and vibrant, with a full-throttle core of dark berry fruit that's rich, focused and full-bodied, offering blackberry, wild berry, plum and black cherry, picking up spice, flora, tar and black licorice flavors in spades. Syrah. Drink now through 2015. 350 cases made.

2006 Cayuse Syrah en Chamberlin Vineyard; Walla Walla, Columbia Valley, Washington ($102)
Parker has not yet reviewed the 2006, but the fine pedigree of this wine -- he also gave the 2004 a 97 point rating -- would suggest to most collectors that these tightly allocated wines are essential for any well-stocked cellar.

Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate 98 points in 2005:  "The 2005 Syrah En Chamberlin is opaque purple with notes of bacon, meat, and blueberry. Totally seamless on the palate, there is plenty of craftily concealed tannin. The wine can be enjoyed now but will be so much better with another 6-8 years of cellaring. Dense and packed, the finish lasts for well over a minute.

Christophe Baron strikes again. His estate, just on the Oregon side of the Walla Walla AVA, consists of five small but distinct vineyards (41 acres in total - with more on the way). Syrah and the Bordeaux varietals are the principal focus but the finest parcels of Tempranillo, Viognier, and Grenache grown in the USA are on this estate. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically and much of the estate is planted on rootstock to prepare for the day when phylloxera works its way through Walla Walla. The wines are all fermented with indigenous yeasts and bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Perfect Pairing Recipe:  Zucchini and Zin

Summer cooking should be simple and fresh.  Save a step by grilling some of Henry's already-marinated steak tips, then serve with this delicious side of seasonal veggies.

Menu:  Dean's "Melting Pot" Steak Tips ($6.99 lb.)

Served with Summer Vegetable Saute (recipe follows)

Wine:  Abundance Vineyards "Abundantly Rich Red"

Ingredients:

2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
1 large sweet onion, thinly sliced
3 cloves garlic, finely diced
3-4 ears fresh corn, cut from cob
2 small zucchini, sliced into 1/4 inch pieces
1 red pepper, thinly sliced
1/2 tsp. oregano
dash of cayenne pepper
2 tbsp. Parmigiano Reggiano cheese
Kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper

Directions:

1.  Heat large skillet over medium-high heat.  Add 1 tbsp. olive oil, then onions.  Saute, stirring occasionally until onions begin to soften.

2.  Add garlic and continue to saute until fragrant. Sprinkle with oregano, cayenne, salt and pepper.

3.  Add sliced red peppers and corn.  Cook for a few minutes, until peppers begin to get tender.

4.  Move veggies to the outside perimeter of the skillet.  Add the other tbsp. of olive oil.  Place zucchini slices in center of pan so that they receive direct heat, and cook until each side is lightly browned, turning once.

5.  Combine all veggies, adjust seasoning, and sprinkle with grated cheese. Serves 4.
