Notes from the Cellar

In the world of wine, reviews and other "expert" advice are just a jumping off point for personal exploration.  No two people experience a wine in exactly the same way, so it stands to reason that tasting new wines on a regular basis is the best way to learn about the wines you truly enjoy.  As with any complex topic -- art, sports and music come to mind -- the more you learn about wine, the more you will appreciate and enjoy it.  Our commitment to sampling wines on a regular basis will help you explore new varietals and pairings, and select wines you can enjoy for everyday drinking as well as special occasions.

Holiday Weekend Schedule

Tasting this Week:  Zesty Zinfandel

Thursday, July 2nd from 4 pm - 7 pm

What better way to celebrate the most patriotic holiday than with a tasting of a uniquely American grape.  Zinfandel has recently been traced back to the Italian grape Primitivo, and follows the path of the Italian immigrants who cultivated grapes in California. But California Zinfandel bears little resemblance to its Italian counterpart.  Zinfandels range in style from a juicy, medium-bodied glass of ripe berry fruit to a full-bodied, intense and spicy old vine cuvee.  Our tasting will cover a range of Zin styles, including the much-maligned White Zinfandel, a sweet wine that was the first step for many serious wine lovers and a delightful summer refresher.

Ridge Three Valleys; Sonoma County ($27.99)
Wine Spectator 89 points in 2006:  "A ripe bruiser, yet with an underlying sense of structure and finesse. Shows aromas of blueberry pie and toasty dill, with concentrated plum, licorice and smoky pepper flavors that are wrapped in muscular tannins."  A blend of 76% Zinfandel, 8% Petite Sirah, 7% Syrah, 6% Grenache and 3% Carignane.  www.ridgewine.com

Folie a Deux Zindandel; Amador County ($17.99)
This home-grown, hand-crafted Zinfandel has a sense of place and family. Blackberries and plums infused with clove, vanilla, and anise spice evoke memories of Grandma's kitchen. A powerful, yet balanced mouthfeel gives way to a silky smooth finish of spicy oak and juicy black cherry.  www.folieadeux.com

Peachy Canyon Zinfandel Westside; Paso Robles ($19.99)
Beautifully balanced with minty cloves and minerality that are complimented by spice and a hint of sweet chocolate.  100% Zinfandel.  www.peachycanyon.com

Four Vines Zinfandel Old Vine Cuvee; California ($14.99)
We have such a great wealth of Zinfandel that we have the ability to put together a fantastic multi-appellation Zin Blend. On the nose the wine has layers of berry fruit and anise aromas with hints of spice. On the palate, blackberry and spicy plum fruit with a rich mouth feel trailing to a velvety toasted oak finish.  www.fourvines.com

Beringer White Zinfandel; California ($6.99)
Fresh red berry, citrus and melon aromas and flavors and round these out with subtle hints of nutmeg and clove.  www.beringer.com

The wines will be accompanied by a sampling of Henry's foods, including a marinated chicken great for your weekend grilling.

All wines offered during tasting will be discounted 10%

Arboreto Montepulciano d'Abbruzo; Italy $9.99
A well-known TV chef once coined the phrase "But is it a spaghetti wine?"  Yes, this trattoria-style red is perfect with pasta, pizza and more.  Easy-drinking and generously fruity, it has surprising structure, yet is not too heavy during warm weather months.

Winery Highlight:  Kiamie Wine Cellars

Those of you who were unable to attend last week's tasting of Kiamie wines, or the wine dinner at Tryst the following evening, missed a terrific opportunity to explore Paso Robles at its finest.  We were so impressed with the wines that further discussion of the winery and its mission will, we hope, spark customer interest in these relatively undiscovered gems.

Kiamie Wine Cellars is a collaboration between three guys with diverse yet complementary backgrounds. Winemaker Steve Glossner has extensive experience working with Westside Paso Robles fruit. General Manager Aram Deirmenjian's family has been farming grapes in California for 30 years. Greg Johnson has over a decades' experience retailing wine in one of New York's top wine shops. They share a vision: to create truly distinctive blends not limited to a predefined wine style, but instead made from the best fruit Paso Robles has to offer.  www.kiamiewines.com

Available at Henry's Wine Cellar:

2007 Kiamie White Kuvee ($27.99)

Beautiful light-gold, brassy tones are displayed on the wine's appearance. White peach, lemongrass, talc and a touch of honeysuckle on the nose. The minerality of the vineyard underlies the array of fruit-driven aromas. Crisp golden apple and lemon gelato flavors envelop the palate. Medium weight with the same minerality creeping in on the finish. A blend of 65% Viognier and 35% Roussanne. 300 cases produced.

2005 Kiamie Kuvee ($42.99)

The Kiamie Kuvée emphasizes neither its Bordeaux nor its Rhône components, but rather reflects the balance and synergy of all its elements, creating a wine style defined by the blend of its unique fruit. This wine possesses a core of rich fruit enveloped by smooth tannins, providing enough structure to allow up to a decade of cellaring.  A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 12% Syrah, 8% Malbec and 5% Zinfandel.  1000 cases produced.

2005 Kiamie Cabernet Sauvignon ($29.99)

What distinguishes this wine is its rich, approachable nature, and a ripe varietal character for which Paso Robles Cabernets are well-known. We blended twenty-five percent Cabernet Franc into the wine to further enhance its complexity and structure. The wine is built for mid-term (3-6 years) aging, but the style predicates drinkability upon release, and full enjoyment of the savory aromas and flavors the wine has to offer now. A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Cabernet Franc. 500 cases produced.

Coming Soon:

2006 Kiamie R'Own Style Blend ($27.99)

Ruby-garnet in hue. Scents of dark cherry, cranberry, pomegranate and hints of cardamom. Tightly-knit, it can use some aeration in its youth to allow the flavors to unfold. Bright strawberry and rhubarb flavors are highlighted by candied red licorice and hot cinnamon spice. Medium in weight with fine-grained tannins, this wine will benefit from some cellaring. Drink over the next three to six years. A blend of 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache, 8% Zinfandel and 2% Vioginer. 900 cases produced.

Finally, Aram Deirmenjian was so pleased with the Tryst wine dinner -- he was impressed that chef Peter Capalbo built the entire dinner around the wines for a true pairing menu -- that we have listed the menu and its fabulous wine selections. Perhaps it will inspire some wine pairing in your kitchen.
