The Focus is on Value at Henry's Wine Cellar

These days businesses are throwing around the word "value" to lure customers.  But what does value mean to you?  In our opinion, value means a high quality to price ratio, with each item carefully selected, so that you can feel confident that your money has been well spent. In the food world, value might refer to a perfectly trimmed steak without an ounce of waste.

In the world of wine, value can mean a special price on a favorite wine, such as those featured in our weekly specials.  But the most exciting wine values are the handpicked selections, wines from smaller producers with minimal marketing presence, wines where essence of the grape and the efforts of the winemaker are evident in every delicious sip.

Special Offer

This elegant Sangiovese-based blend -- a bit of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot add structure and complexity -- is a full-bodied example of Italian red at its best.  Very little is produced (around 2000 cases), and even less is imported into the U.S. At this special price it would be a welcome addition to any wine cellar.  www.morisfarms.it

2004 Morisfarms Morellino di Scansano Riserva
Maremma, Tuscany, Italy (reg. $39.99, special $27.99)

Robert Parker's The Wine Advocate 91 points:  "An irresistible offering.  It reveals an additional layer of density and vibrancy than the regular bottling, with attractive notes of black cherries, licorice, smoke and toasted oak.  The wine's gorgeous depth, palate presence, texture and finessed tannins all make for a beautifully balanced, totally compelling wine that should continue to drink well for the next seven to eight years. Morisfarms is a great source for well-priced offerings from Tuscany's Maremma.  Consulting oenologist Attilio Pagli doesn't miss a beat here, as these are all terrific wines."

Featured Wines and New Arrivals

The hallmark of a great wine shop is the carefully selected range of interesting and diverse wines from around the world.  The selection should be dynamic, with frequent new additions joining store favorites which have earned a permanent place on the shelves.  Each week we will highlight noteworthy new arrivals, with detailed tasting notes to tempt your tastebuds and inspire your wine pairing meals.

2007 Carmel Road Chardonnay; Monterey, CA ($19.99)

Winemaker's Notes: "The 2006 is an overtly fruit-forward wine with a rich palate and crisp framework. Lemon sorbet/zest, pear, citrus blossom, and sweet vanilla flavors lead to toasted baguette in the finish."  www.carmelroad.com

2007 Carmel Road Pinot Noir; Monterey, CA ($19.99)

Winemaker's Notes:  "An earthy and elegant wine, marked by red currant, red cherry, warm spice, forest aromas and a toasty oak finish."  www.carmelroad.com

2006 Napa Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon; Napa, CA ($24.99)

Winery Notes:  "The tradition of blending and consistency is key to our Napa Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon. Utilizing vineyards from Oakville to Calistoga, Napa Cellars' winemakers develop an optimal blend that brings out complex dark fruit characteristics. Year in and year out, Napa Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon reveals vibrant aromas of blackberries and plum that join with nicely integrated oak and vanilla on the palate - a Napa Classic."  www.napacellars.com

2007 Napa Cellars Chardonnay; Napa, CA ($19.99)

Winery Notes:  "Napa Cellars Chardonnay is our flagship wine. Every year the palate showcases huge fruit flavors reminiscent of tropical fruit, balanced by a layer of lemony acidity and a long, polished finish. Its moderate acidity makes it a more versatile Chardonnay when pairing with food."  www.napacellars.com

2007 Lioco Chardonnay; Sonoma County, CA ($22.99)

Winery Notes:  This is the wine we wanted to make in 2006, but had neither the raw material nor the facility to do so. In 2007, it all came together-a small, concentrated crop of Chardonnay and a premium winemaking facility giving us full control of the elevage. What is immediately noticeable in the wine is freshness. Where the 2006 was rich, this wine is vivid. Unencumbered by oak, the fruit and soil character are on display. A band of chalky minerality cuts through the green pears, grapefruit, and chamomile blossoms.  www.liocowine.com

2007 Bastianich Friulano; Colli Orientali, Friuli, Italy ($17.99)

Winery Notes:  "By order of the European Union, 2007 marks the first vintage that the grape variety formerly known as Tocai Friulano must be called Friulano.  The wine is medium-bodied, with ripe, luscious pear flavors carried by a refreshing mineral flavor and zesty mouthwatering acidity that mixed together create a perfect wine to enhance food.  www.bastianich.com

2007 Telmo Rodriguez Toro Dehesa Gago Red; Spain ($17.99)

100% Tinto de Toro.  Plum, grape, leaf and light chocolate flavors mingle in this medium-bodied red, which is smooth, with moderate tannins and a crisp finish.  2,500 cases imported.  www.telmorodriguez.com

2008 Domaine Talmard Macon-Chardonnay; Burgundy, France ($14.99)

Served by the glass at Tryst. This intensely-flavored Macon Chardonnay is vinified and aged in stainless steel. It is notable for its freshness, purity of Chardonnay fruit, and consistency from vintage to vintage.

2007 Laurenz V Singing Gruner Veltliner; Austria ($15.99)

Winery Notes:  "The grapes for the Singing Grüner Veltliner are grown mainly in loess and gravel soils of the Kremstal region. By adding some Veltliner grapes from the Weinviertel region the wine takes on the typical spiciness and a touch of white pepper. Laurenz und Sophie "sings" on the palate - is lively and vibrant still balanced and very food friendly."  www.laurenzfive.com

2005 Domaine de Triennes Saint Auguste; Provence, France ($19.99)

Tasting notes: "Triennes' flagship red wine is a blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvigon and Merlot. A dark, dense wine with purple hues, it shows spicy aromas combined with ripe fresh fruit. The palate is rich and full of life with plenty of structure. This is a wine that needs some air to truly open up and show its best. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot." www.triennes.com
