This month, particular thanks go out to the Agnon PTA for graciously providing our teachers and staff with daily delights during Staff Appreciation Week, May 7- 11.  Gifts included a lovely catered lunch, book store gift cards, special treats and thoughtful expressions of gratitude.

MACCABISTUDENTS PLAY IN MACABBI GAMES


On Lag B'Omer (May 10th), students in Kindergarten - 8th grade divided into colorful teams to participate in Agnon's annual Macabbi Field Day.  
 
Activities included shooting hoops, tug of war rope games, a water balloon toss as well as many other fun events and yummy treats.  

 

 

 

 

FENCINGFENCING FOR FITNESS

 

Fencing is part of Agnon's 8th grade physical education program.  During six classes with a special instructor, students learned the fundamental of fencing and acquired the appropriate skills needed to fence.  After donning the appropriate fencing gear, group exercises and partner skills were practiced.

Agnon honored all of its parent volunteers on May 22nd with a special appreciation breakfast sponsored by Rabbi Sharon and John Marcus.  We thank all of our dedicated parents who give their time and energy to The Agnon School.

MOMENTAGNON 4TH GRADER WINS WRITING CONTEST

Agnon 4th Grader Julia Koller recently won Moment magazine's
Publish-a-Kid contest for her creative and insightful book review of Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. Her review is published in the magazine's May / June issue and can be read online from this link.

As a prize, Julia received a signed copy of The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster. She and her Agnon 4th grade teacher, Kim Favor, will also receive a subscription to Moment magazine.

Moment, an independent Jewish publication co-founded in 1975 by Leonard Fein and Elie Wiesel, is published by the Center For Creative Change.
TSIPIFACULTY FOCUS:  TSIPI ARENAS Tsipi Arenas, 4th grade teacher

 

For the past three years, Tsipi Arenas has been teaching 4th grade Hebrew and Judaic Studies at The Agnon School. Tsipi, who teaches 6th grade Tanach as well, believes that students should be encouraged to reach great heights. "The bar needs to be set high.  Love of Israel, the Hebrew language, and Judaism need to be instilled at a young age and continue to be cultivated throughout childhood," said Tsipi.

 

She has a B.A. from Stern College for Women / Yeshiva University and an M.A. in Elementary Education from Hunter College in New York City, and for 15 years she taught at the Ramaz School on New York City's Upper East Side.

 

Originally from Cleveland, Tsipi lives in University Heights with her husband, Mario, and their three daughters, who attend Agnon.

 

She is involved with Congregation Shaarey Tikvah, and when not teaching, enjoys being with her family, reading, biking, hiking and going to the park.  This summer Tsipi and her family plan to travel to Washington, D.C. and New York.

BULLYAGNON STUDENTS ATTEND BULLYING PREVENTION PROGRAM

 

Bully PreventionAgnon Kindergarten - 3rd grader students recently attended a bullying prevention program called "We First" presently by Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio.  Creatively executed, this special program included songs, stories, puppets and interactive demonstrations that help empower young students to work together to not only prevent, but stop bullying.

Three Return to Agnon for Senior Search Project

On May 13th, members of the Class of 2008 (now high school seniors) and their families gathered at Helen Salz and Jeff Sunshine's home (Kerrin Sunshine) to relax and reminisce about their days at Agnon. Many thanks to Agnon alumni parent Leslie Sobel (Howard and Ari Sobel) for coordinating this fun event.

Senior Projects
In addition, three Class of 2008 alumni have returned to Agnon to conduct their high school senior search projects. Brooke Peskin is working with Karen Shiffman in her Kindergarten class, Rachel Shaw is volunteering with Johannah Cross in 1st grade and Ari Sobel is helping Judy Fitzmaurice with physical education classes.

The Agnon School is co-sponsoring a world-class basketball camp featuring Omri Casspi and Tamir Goodman. 

Designed to teach boys and girls in grades 1 - 8 unique basketball skills in a positive, engag
ing and inspirational environment, each day will include a theme, motivational speaker, small group drills and two league games.

ABOUT OMRI               At 6' 9", Omri Casspiis an Israeli-born professional basketball player with the Cleveland Cavaliers, playing at the small forward position.  Drafted in 2009 by the Sacramento Kings, Casspi is the first Israeli to play in the NBA.

ABOUT TAMIR            Dubbed the "Jewish Jordan" by Sports Illustrated, Tamir Goodman played professional and Division I college basketball in Israel and America.  He now shares his inspirational journey and basketball expertise with young athletes across the country.
SEMINARAGNON OFFERS PARENTING SEMINAR Parenting Seminar

 

Parents with young children are invited to sign up for "Jewish Parents Together:  Understanding Problem Solving (UPS)."  Open to the community, this new discussion group will address early childhood issues and help participants find solutions to their concerns.  Agnon Early Childhood Educator Alyson Charnas and Director of Early Childhood Cathy Schreiber will act as group facilitators.
