| The Agnon Agenda | The Spring is Sprung Issue April 2012 | |
Welcome to the April Agnon Agenda
This issue, bursting with great news and wonderful photos, is a testament to the Agnon community's energy and creativity. From its young show-tunes performers to its middle-school-scientists to its auction co-chairs and to the grandmother who taught the 4th grade how to bake brisket, The Agnon School, its students and their families are growing and thriving.
Among the exuberant news of record-breaking fundraising efforts and students' academic achievements, don't miss these other messages: |
ANNUAL AUCTION RAISES RECORD AMOUNT
Agnon raised a record $180,000 for technology, scholarship assistance, programming and operating revenue at its 23rd Annual Benefit Auction and Raffle held Sunday, April 22, at the school.
With the theme "The Magic of Agnon," the evening set multiple records, including the largest number of alumni parents in attendance, overall attendance (up almost 20% from last year's record crowd), fund-a-need donations, and raffle ticket sales.
"Dozens of volunteers put in countless hours to make this evening a success, and the generosity of those in attendance was overwhelming. We want to thank all of the bidders plus our donors and sponsors," said Head of School Jerry Isaak-Shapiro. "However, the real magic behind Agnon is our talented teachers and dedicated staff."
Event co-chairs Eliana LeVine, Meg Ratner and Elisabeth Sapell worked tirelessly for several months to ensure a successful event. During the live auction, Agnon Board member and parent Scott Simon acted as the evening's entertaining master of ceremonies, and an auctioneer provided excitement while taking bids for everything from Cavs tickets to a Cleveland Zoo behind-the-scenes tour.
In addition, the sold-out crowd bid on a myriad of items ranging from restaurant and beauty salon gift certificates to wide-screen televisions and vacation packages. Agnon parents also got the chance to bid on teacher outings for their children. Another favorite item was bidding on the opportunity for a student to act as Head of School for a day.
"Funds raised at this Benefit Auction allow us to ensure a quality education for our students," commented Laura Leventhal, Director of Development. "We'd like to thank our Agnon parents - past and present - as well as all of our grandparents and community members who showed their support at this event."

This added section, which boosts the number of Agnon Kindergarten classes from two to three, allows the school to continue to feature small class sizes while fostering individualized education. In addition, the school will have three third grade classes next year. This year, increased enrollment included 12 mid-year transfer students entering Early Childhood through Middle School classes. |

STUDENTS SEE PRINTMAKING AND MULTIMEDIA ART IN ACTION
A Target grant for an artist-in-residence program gave Agnon 3rd graders the chance to visit with multi-media artist Dexter Davis. Dexter, a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art, combines wood-cut prints with other materials ranging from cloth to paper cups. With work in several local galleries and museums, Dexter sold his first piece to the Cleveland Museum of Art this year. During Dexter's visit, students viewed a slide show and watched the artist make one of his wood-cut prints.
In addition, 4th graders took a field trip to Zygote Press, a studio where artists share printing presses for etching, stone lithography and relief printing. Students observed three different artists at work and created their own artwork using the printing presses there. |
