June News from the Ohme Gardens Friends' SocietyWe are very pleased to be a recipient of a $3000 grant from the Community Foundation of North Central Washington. We appreciate the support of this important granting organization that makes such a difference to so many non-profits in NCW! The grant provides the final funds to build Phase I of the safety lighting project. We will install the lighting on the path that leads from the entrance to the Lower Lawn. The remainder of the monies for this project were raised with the sale of the 4th of July raffle tickets. Here is your opportunity to help out in the Gardens: On Saturday, June 25th beginning at 8:00am, we will dig the trenches in which to lay the electrical cable for the lights. The trench will be 8 inches deep and dug by hand so that we create minimal impact on the landscaping, the stone path and tree roots. Bring a trowel and/or a trenching shovel and spend a fun morning with other Garden volunteers. All adults in the community are welcome to help. We are still soliciting funding for Phase II of the safety lighting and hope to have the funds this season to install lights around the Totem pole Lodge and the handicapped parking area. Can you help by making a donation to the Friends for this project? For more information, please email ohmegardens(at)charter(dot)net. The 4th of July raffle featuring a catered dinner for 10 people and private use of the Gardens to watch the fireworks was won by Jill Rowley! She and 9 of her friends are planning to have a special 4th of July. We thank Country Boys Barbeque for the donation of the dinner. And thanks to everyone who bought a raffle ticket to fund Phase I of the lighting project!

| Gardening Tips for June | |
- The best time to pick flowers from your garden is in the early morning. For longer lasting arrangements, use a clean container, change your water daily and cut the tip off the stems every few days.
- Deadhead and lightly prune roses regularly throughout the summer. Prune a small amount off the stem after each flower has finished to encourage more blooms. When pruning, always remember to cut above a stem with at least five leaves.
- Keep a close eye out for rust. Rust is a fungal disease that causes orange spots on leaves. If you see signs of rust, make sure to remove and destroy the infected areas of your plant. This disease spreads quickly so be careful not to drop infected cuttings on the soil.
- (Tips from www.GardeningTips.org)
- Have a continuously blooming Garden! Plant a variety of early, mid and late-blooming flowers: http://www.hgtv.com/landscaping/enjoy-flowers-all-spring/pictures/index.html
