Greetings!

For some reason people still seem to think Ohme Gardens closes after Labor Day weekend.   Since the Gardens were first opened to the public in 1939, it has always been open from April through October.   In those early years the season was "early April until late October,"   and the hours were "8:00am until dark, seven days a week."    Today we are open from April 15th to October 15th, seven days a week, which in my opinion is the best 6 month time period to experience the Gardens.  The hours have changed from 9:00 am - 6:00pm spring and fall and 9:00am - 7:00pm Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Fall brings its own unique feel and atmosphere to the Gardens experience.   The temperatures are cooler, kids are back in school, the sunlight is softer and the busy summer tourist season is over.  The rock cotoneaster bushes reach their peak with bright red berries that add a dramatic accent to the landscape.  The red, yellow, and orange sumac bushes reflect vividly in the Hidden Pool which makes a beautiful backdrop for photographers taking family and/or wedding photos.  Many other fall blooming plants add to the fall color.

I would like to encourage anyone interested in joining the Ohme Gardens Friends' Society to attend the annual membership appreciation meeting on Thursday, September 9th starting at 5:30pm.  As a self-supporting entity, the Gardens rely on the help and support the Friends' group provides to enhance, preserve and promote this wonderful garden.   If you feel you would like to become apart of the Friends' group and donate your time and energy to the continuation of Ohme Gardens, please join!

Warm regards,

Thanks Collin for all your hard work!

September Gardening Tips

Fall is a great time to plant trees, shrubs, bulbs, perennials, grass seed and sod. Plants that are planted in the fall enjoy cooler temperatures and ideal growing conditions that allow roots ample time to grow into the surrounding soil.  Plants and trees that provide color in the month of September include Beautyberry, Crape Myrtles, Cotoneaster, Viburnums, Hypericum, Hydrangeas, Potentilla, Pyracantha and Butterfly Bush.

There are lots of perennials with interest now including Coreopsis, Scabiosa and ornamental grasses. Do not prune Azaleas, Rhododendrons and other spring flowering shrubs because they have already set their buds for next year's blooms. If you feel these shrubs do need to be pruned, however, you can prune them now, but you will sacrifice next spring flowers.

September is the best month of the entire year to seed your lawn. This includes both seeding a new lawn and reseeding an established lawn to make it thicker and healthier. If needed, fall is a great time to aerate and/or de-thatch the lawn. If you decide to do one or both of these, they should be done prior to seeding. If you do plan to aerate, de-thatch or rototill, thoroughly soak the soil a day or two before you start your project or perform your project a day or two after a good rain.
Featured Bloom of the Month
SALVIA Superba

Salvia

A very large group of plants, Salvia is typically happiest in a sunny, well drained location.  Usually long blooming, the flowers of perennial Salvia are often in whorls on taller stems and are suitable for cutting.  It does very well in mixed beds, borders or containers, and is generally drought tolerante and deer resistant.

"The grounds are quiet, restful, and not dependent on formal floral displays... Breathtaking views of the Columbia River Valley below can be seen through cedar and fir trees, now more than 70 years old... It is a photographer's paradise."  ~ Northwest Travel Magazine
