Tea in the Gardens
Greetings!

The Gardens
Thanks to the diligent efforts of the Ohme Gardens Friends' Society, led by Bonnie Orr, and the financial support of the Community Foundation of North Central Washington and the Wenatchee Central Lions Club, the Gardens have completed two new projects.  The Community Foundation of NCW funded the completion of the new sunken lawn water feature.  The Wenatchee Central Lions Club's Dr. George Kingston Fund supported the newly paved parking lot and ADA path which allows easy access for all guests to enjoy gardens.   A special thanks goes out to Eagle Scout Rogan Clay, for the excellent work on the ADA path for his Eagle Scout Project here at Ohme Gardens. The new access leads to our newest waterfall feature located on the Sunken Lawn.  This waterfall enhancement adds a much needed backdrop to our wedding lawn.  We anticipate that it will only create additional events to be scheduled during the Gardens hours.  We would like to thank the staff at United Pipe & SupplyStar Rentals, Brian Cockrum of Mitchell Paving, Dan Dittrich of The Road Home for their help and support with the above mentioned projects.

Art in the Gardens
Read on in this newsletter for all the details about this year's art classes organized by the hard working Ginger Spice-Hendrickson. These two day art classes, 3 hours each day, will be a way to treat your budding artists.  The class fee pays for supplies and supports the Friend's projects.  The best part is that kids have fun in the Gardens.  Four of the classes are arranged as family events.  Look for the ones titled Mommy and Me.
GailVOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Gail Cerenzia

Gail moved to the Wenatchee Valley spring of 2009.  In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her grandson from Renton.  When she is done tweaking and fine-tuning her own landscaping, she enjoys volunteering her time and skills at the Gardens.  Originating from the Seattle area, the evergreen trees and lush surroundings make her feel at home.  The Gardens also bring back pleasant memories of her camping trips to Spirit Lake before the eruption of Mount Saint Helens.  Gail says that it is, "Impossible to be in a bad mood after spending time in the Gardens."  Transplanting new plant starts is her favorite tasks as a volunteer.  Another enjoyable volunteer duty is deadheading near the tranquil waterfalls within the Gardens.  Gail is also an active member of the Ohme Gardens Friends' Society.  Gail loves bringing her family members to enjoy the beauty of the Gardens and is excited for the 2010 Summer Music Series during those warm summer nights.

Thank you Gail for all your hardwork and dedication to the Gardens.
Making a Wish

In the hills sat a wishing well,
All nestled in stone.
Where people of all shapes and sizes,
Would visit its rocky throne.
 Tossing tokens of hope,
They would send their wishes down.
Within the glossy mirror,
A trusting prayer was found.
Captured by beauty and grace,
Wishers would cast their cares away.
In the hills sat a wishing well,
Making promises for a better day.
The Wishing Well

Here wishes really do come true! This enchanting feature was built in the 1930s.  The money collected from the wishing well was donated to the Children's' Orthopedic Hospital.  Today, the funds are donated to the replanting and further enhancement and beautification of the Gardens.

About Tastebuds
Stepping into Tastebuds is like visiting the Wenatchee version of "Cheers". From the moment you walk through the doors, you'll feel the hectic world outside disappear as you take in the delicious aromas, welcoming faces and relaxing atmosphere.
Our Jiffy Java customers wanted a place to sit, relax and enjoy their coffee. And as it turned out, one of our loyal customers owns the Mission Street Plaza, suggesting that it could be a great location for our second shop. We also decided we needed to add a service that would allow our customers to stay later than normal-so we added a wine list. The ultimate goal at Tastebuds is to pamper you with great wine and coffee in a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. Tastebuds is here to answer all of your questions, and to make your experience exceed all expectations.

June Gardening Tips

Keep on top of weeds during the early summer when they are small and easy to pull.  If you keep your garden plants well watered and fertilized, they will quickly fill in and give weeds fewer places to grow.  Mulches are a great way to deter weeds and retain soil moisture.

Prune spring flowering shrubs right after they finish blooming to avoid removing next year's flower buds.  Older stems can be removed to the ground and plants can be lightly shaped by cutting the longest branches part way back with a pruning shears.  This results in a more natural look that will stay dense in the middle and bloom well again next year.

Some perennial flowers such as Monarda and Artemisia are very fast growers and will take over your garden. Don't be afraid to dig out parts and share them with friends.

Grass can quickly invade gardens and landscape plantings and is best deterred with a good quality edging that is properly installed.
Featured Bloom of the Month
SAPONARIA Soapwort

Blooming profusely in spring, Saponaria is excellent in rock gardens, spilling over walls or on the edges of a border.  It is called Soapwort because crushing the leaves in water will form a lather that once was used as a soap.  In the ornamental garden, it thrives in full sun and moist, well-drained soil.
