Ohme Gardens Newsletter April 2010
|
|
2010 Season begins April 15th
Greetings,
With the passing of winter brings a new beginning, and the eighty-first season at Ohme Gardens! Opening day for the Gardens will be April 15th, however current Season Pass holders and Sponsors can participate in an early bird sale; "A Little Bit of Ohme Gardens Plant Sale" on April 14th! This plant sale will open to public on April 15th. With the mild winter, the blooms of the Gardens are ahead of schedule, as you may have witnessed in your own gardens. There has been a lot of work going on at the Gardens during the off season and there are many new and exciting things:
- ADA access path into the lower lawn
- More native plant areas
- Several newly replanted areas
- A beautiful new water feature in the sunken lawn
We look forward to seeing your familiar friendly faces at the Gardens again this season and hopefully many more new faces as we continue to make improvements and create more activities and events.
Make a Difference Day last October 24th was another success . There were 25 great volunteers who donated their time and energy to the Gardens. Volunteers worked on areas in the gardens prepping them for springtime planting and helped remove plants to make room for the new water feature. Volunteers also planted some areas and did garden maintenance. Thank you to all the volunteers that donated their time last October.

Boy Scout Eagle Projects
Several projects were completed this last year thanks to the hard work of local Boy Scout Eagle projects. Rogan Eugene Clay worked on the new ADA pathway that connects the ADA service road parking lot to the lower lawn. Keegan Dahlquist developed a pathway and stone stairway used by garden staff for wedding and event set-up. Alex Boswell's project made walking the paths by the lookout and the top pool area easier to walk by re-leveling the stones in the paths. All these projects were big undertakings and greatly benefited the Gardens. A big thanks to all three for their efforts and all who helped them complete these projects which led to them attaining the rank of Eagle Scout.

AmeriCorps
On March 26th, 2010 a group of fifty AmeriCorps volunteers donated their time and efforts towards the Gardens. Over 100 flats of plants from our nursery and 60 new ferns of various varieties were planted. A lot was accomplished in a short amount of time. Thanks to all the AmeriCorps volunteers for their hard work and to Niles Sundquist at Sundquist Nursery (www.sqnursery.com) for his assistance with fern selection and acquisition.
This new season also brings with it a new water feature. Started last fall, Ohme Gardens staff and inmate volunteers have worked hard installing and preparing an exciting new water feature in the Sunken Lawn. Thanks to Star Rentals for providing the backhoe needed to complete the water feature. Be sure to make time this season to see this wonderful water feature.
Please continue to check out the exciting upcoming events this season as they get posted on our website. Sincerely,
Mike Short Garden Administrator |

Lightly rake your lawn to remove dead grass, sticks and debris. April is also a good time to rent a core aerator and go over high traffic areas two or three times to reduce soil compaction.
Early spring is the best time to divide flowering perennials including daylilies, hosta, monarda, balloon flower and many others.
Encourage migrating birds to stop in your yard or take up residence by supplying food, water, nesting materials, birdhouses and plantings of tall shrubs, evergreens and plants with berries, seeds or nectar for hummingbirds.
