August also saw performances by the Andrew Thompson Band, a duo of Joe Guimond & Steve Barone, and another duo from Mike Bills & Ginger Holiday. A special thanks to all the performers for making the first Summer Concert Series at Ohme Gardens a memorable one. Remember to keep your calendars clear for 2010 and be ready for another fresh line up performances.

Art in the Gardens
Ohme Gardens Friends' Society hosted two great art classes in August: Beautiful Big Hanging Butterflies taught by Sue Floyd and Bird Houses, Fairies and Wood Folk taught by Shelly Olson & Ginger Spice. The kids turned out some amazing final projects and enjoyed the inspiration of the Gardens and the helpful guidance of their instructors.

Star Gazing
The Gardens were filled with Star Gazers on August 15th. All who attended enjoyed a cool quiet night at the Gardens and were able to learn about the visible constellations, space stations and planets in the sky. Thanks to the Friend's Society and the Apple Valley Astronomy Club for hosting this final astronomy event of the season. Thanks to all the participants that helped make these events possible.
September is the last full month the Gardens are open to the public. Don't forget to drop by before the season is over.
Sincerely,

Enjoy these quotes and jokes filled wth Garden humor!
"A weed is a plant that has mastered every survival skill except for learning how to grow in rows." - Doug Larson
"I have no plants in my house. They won't live for me. Some of them don't even wait to die, they commit suicide." - Jerry Seinfeld
What does everyone have on their face?
- Tulips
A man walks into a flower shop "I'd like some flowers please." "Certainly, Sir. What did you have in mind?" He shrugs "Well I'm not sure, I uh, I uh, I uh..." "Perhaps I could help. What exactly have you done?"
Why are husbands like lawn mowers? They are difficult to get started, emit foul smells and don't work half the time.

| September Gardening Tips
Don't wait for frost warnings to move plants inside.
Fall is a great time to improve your gardening soil. Add manure, compost and leaves to increase the organic content.
Water newly planted trees or shrubs to give sufficient moisture and prevent winter damage. Add a three inch layer of organic mulch to retain soil moisture and regulate the temperature.

Ohme Gardens Friends' Society updates |
August was so hot that we did not hold our Gardening with Friends' events. Two are planned for September, one the 7th and the 21st. The time has been moved to 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm so we will have daylight to plant. Mike Short has indicated that he has some special plantings that the Friends can do at these two events. Come join us. Bring hand gardening tools, gloves and a kneeler. There will be refreshments afterwards. Nearly 100 people attended the stargazing on August 15th. It was so satisfying to see people of all ages show up. The Apple Valley Astronomy Club members were fabulous starguides who answered questions and insured that everyone had a look at planets, novas and various constellations. Our next Friends' meeting is Wednesday, Sept 30th from 4:00- 6:00 in the downstairs room at the Wenatchee Public Library on Douglas St. We are encouraging people who want to work on one or more projects to join us at these meetings. You can volunteer for general projects or work on merely one of the projects that appeals to you. In November, we will be creating our project list for 2010.
The Friends' Group hard at work during their last meeting
Those of you who attended the August meeting, please be sure to get your completed list of skills and talents, the Assessment sheet, back to me by Sept. 15th. See form at the end of the newsletter. We are making good progress selling 2010 raffle tickets for the Fourth of July catered dinner for 10 and a private viewing of the fireworks. It was such a success last year that we know many people will want to buy a chance for the 2010 special occasion. This year the monies from the raffle will go toward the safety lights for the garden.

"Build It and They Will Come"
Excerpt from the book Ohme Gardens: Alpine Wonderland
Thousands of guests engaged in various activities at the Gardens. Picnicking at Ohme Gardens was popular because visitors could sit on log chairs at one of the many round picnic tables, while they enjoyed the panoramic views. Brides, too, discovered the ever-changing floral palette, reflecting pools and dark green lawns made an ideal setting for a wedding. The wedding path formed a beautiful staircase for the bride to make her entry onto the "entrance lawn below". Weddings began soon after the Gardens opened to the public in 1940, and the Gardens remain a popular venue for outdoor garden weddings. Easter Sunrise services also began during the 1940s. Little was done to publicize the Gardens, but word soon spread, and by the 1950s, the annual number of visitors was nearing 20,000. The four-acre garden gradually became self-supporting. Books are available at the Ohme Gardens Gift Shop or online at www.ohmegardens.com. |

Featured Bloom of the Month |
Isotoma (Laurentia)
fluviatilis Blue Star Creeper
With tiny, star-shaped flowers appearing spring through summer, Isotoma forms a dense, flat mat of small green leaves. In full sun, with moderate soil moisture, it is suitable for planting between pavers, in a rock garden or in a border. As a ground cover, it will tolerate moderate foot traffic. |
A Wedding Tradition Since 1940 Weddings at Ohme Gardens
Ohme Gardens is dedicated to making any wedding a special and memorable one. If you or someone else you know is in the process of looking for breathtakingly beautiful outside wedding venues, remember to visit Ohme Gardens and ask about our special wedding packages. |
