Add Ohme Gardens as a Friend Today!!
Greetings,

Wow! July was a busy month for events. We kicked off our first ever Summer Concert Series with performances every Thursday in July and August.  Concert goers were encouraged to bring picnic dinners to compliment their enjoyment of the music and a garden setting.  Sum Guy (Brian Ohme) started the series on July 2nd and was joined by his brother Kevin and a friend.  Next was Andrew Thompson and his group on July 9th, then Joe Guimond on July 16th, Mike Bills teamed up with Joe Guimond on July 23rd and Michael Michkiosky and the Front Page Blues Band finished out the month of July on the 30th. A special thanks to all the musicians for their outstanding performances.

Another thanks to Sally Brawley for getting the new Summer Concerts Series started as an annual event at the Gardens.  Also thank you to Bonnie Orr and the Friends' Society for providing concessions during each concert.

The Wells House Players directed by Rod Molzahn entertained audiences for three nights with their Shakespearean play: The Comedy of Errors.  This was their second season at Ohme Gardens and all three performances were well attended.

Friends' Society Updates
July has been hot, so for July and August  we have suspended Gardening with Friends on Monday evenings. But be prepared to help out on September 7th and 21st because there will be lots of planting to do. Join us from 6:30 -8:30 for companion planting and treats.

The Fourth of July was a special evening for Darlene and Phil Guitzwiller and their friends. Dinner was donated by Country Boys Southern Bar-be-que in Cashmere and by Bonnie Orr and Sally Brawley. It was a perfect evening of great food, views, fireworks and friendship.  Wouldn't you like to  be the lucky ones on July 4, 2010?  We are already selling tickets for the raffle.  This year's raffle will raise money for the lighting system in the Gardens and parking lots. We plan to have solar system designed because we want the Gardens to remain as green as can be!.  Buy tickets at the Gardens or the concerts or other Garden events.

The next Friends event  is  Stargazing, coordinated by the knowledgeable volunteers from the Apple Valley Astronomy Club, who will bring their large telescopes.  Come join us on August 15th.  It is fun for the whole family. Be there on Saturday night no later than 9:00 P.M. Bring flashlights and binoculars.  We will be looking at planets, the space station and dozens of shooting stars.  Admission is $3.

During the last month of summer vacation, kids love new activities, and we have something special to offer.  Read below about the special art classes offered each Tuesday and Wednesday in August. The creative teachers have designed original art classes that encompass the natural world.

The Friends are pleased to announce another grant from ALCOA to help the Gardens with various projects.  Thank you ALCOA Action Workers for your help getting the Gardens ready in April.

The preparations for the handicapped access road and parking are underway. We are so pleased to have the help of the Central Lions of Wenatchee, and other generous donors. When the project is completed, we will have a grand opening and ribbon cutting.

This project will provide people with limited mobility access to the Lower Lawn, the waterfall and pool to be built later this season, and to Sylvan Pool as well  as to the vistas of the Columbia River and  Cascade mountains.

Are you interested in becoming a Friend?  We are looking for new Board Members who want to share some time and talents to enhance Ohme Gardens. Call the Friends' Society President, Bonnie Orr, to open a friendly conversation of how you can impact the Gardens 884-5069.
Just A Nice Backyard
"Build It and They Will Come"
Excerpt from the book Ohme Gardens: Alpine Wonderland

As always, a high degree of workmanship was the standard, as they,  Ruth and Herman Ohme, carefully blended the plants and stonework into the existing rugged landscape keeping a natural appearance.  Their interest was not so much in showcasing the beauty of a particular plant, but more in creating an effect that contributed to the overall natural design.  "Our whole idea has been to show the flower, shrubs and trees in a natural appearing setting.  This wasn't a conscious theme idea we discussed; it just seemed to be how we all felt. Every idea we came up with for an addition seemed to fit naturally into what we already had." Ruth explained years later.

A D-6 Caterpillar tractor was borrowed from neighbor Al Hampton and was used to shape the pool.  Cement trucks were able to reach this location making it a little easier than the other pools in the Gardens.  The Twin Pools were Gordon's first major project after his father's death.  The Twin Pools took three years to complete and were opened in 1974.  With the addition of the Twin Pools, the Gardens were completed at nine garden acres.

7:00 pm

Enjoy the magic of Shakespeare during a special presentation of The Comedy of Errors by the Short Shakespeareans at 7 p.m. on the entrance lawn of beautiful Ohme Gardens. The entrance lawn is accessible to those who have limited mobility.  Ohme Gardens is offering a special discounted entrance fee of $3 for this evening performance. In it's 31st year under the direction of founder and director Sherry Chastain Schreck, the children's acting troupe will perform several scenes from this fast-moving farce. Full of sight gags and hilarious mix-ups, the play opens with a seafaring accident in the Adriatic sea in which two sets of twins are separated as infants, each with one parent. One parent, one noble son, and one servant end up in Ephesus; the other threesome in Syracuse. Many years later, the identical twins and their parents are thrown together in Ephesus! Master and Servant keep meeting the other Master and Servant in total confusion! A colorful comedy for children and adults!
