Gardening with Friends'

Last month's Gardening with Friends' were hosted by Larry and Diane Mundy who had some very delicious snacks and beverages for all the volunteers to enjoy at the stone picnic table in the Gardens to end the evening. The quiet cool evening atmosphere makes a pleasant working environment and invites good conversation with other Ohme Friends' members.

Father's Day Special
Michael Lemcke of Michael's Photography offered a professional 8x10 family photo on Fathers day at the Gardens for the second year in a row.

Artists in the Gardens
Artists from the Wenatchee Visual Arts Network Guild spread themselves around various locations in the Gardens on Fathers Day weekend for special Artists in the Gardens weekend.  Visitors watched as the artists created their art from scratch.  Art was also available for sale by each artist.  Some very fine works of art from jewelry making to paintings were created during the two days.  Some prints of Ohme Gardens paintings will be available in Ohme Gardens' gift shop later this season.

New Native Plant Section
Cordell, Neher & Company, PLLC
Ohme Gardens got its first of several native plant areas in the Gardens in June thanks to Cordell, Neher and Co. PLLC and Bonnie Orr, President of the Friends' Society.

Cordell, Neher and Co. closes their office and volunteers one day each year for a community service project.  The Gardens were selected for this year's project.  After a lot of hard work and effort they finished the project under the guidance of Bonnie Orr, who designed and selected the native plants for this area.  Ohme Gardens gives a very big thank you to Cordell, Neher and Co. and Bonnie Orr for their contribution to the Gardens.

Friends' Society Updates
June was a busy month for the Friends. We received a grant from the Washington Native Plants Society to start a series of new plants. The first phase was planted on June 30th by 30 volunteers from Cordell Neher. I have never seen a group work so hard and accomplish so much in one day.

Come see the plantings on the trail below the overlook on the south end of the Lower Lawn. The native plants will attract butterflies and hummingbirds.

The Wenatchee Central Lions Kingston Memorial Fund awarded $12,800 to complete the handicapped access parking area. We are so thankful for this grant which will allow us to build the access that the Friends had determined was the number one goal for 2009.

The Fourth of July Raffle was won by Darlene and Phil Guitzwiller. They and 8 guests had a private party and watched the fireworks.  Barbeque was donated by Country Boys Southern Style Barbeque in Cashmere.  Thank you Tom Dew for your generous support.

The raffle raised $1800 that will be used to build the ramp from the handicapped access parking lot to the Lower Lawn.

The art classes on Tuesday and Wednesday from 10:30- 2:30 have been coordinated and organized by Ginger Hendrickson and is the major fund raiser for July and August.

Our annual fundraiser will be another raffle for the Fourth of July.  Buy your tickets at the Gardens or call a Friend.  This raffle did help us support an important project in the Gardens. The 2010 project will be lighting for the Gardens.

Gardening with Friends will not take place in July.  It is just too hot to enjoy working in the Gardens.  This event will resume on the first and third Monday evenings in August from 6:30-8:30.

Come join us for our Board meeting at the Downtown Wenatchee Library on Wednesday, July 15th from 4:00 pm -5:15 pm.

Enjoy the Gardens; support the friends.

Ohme Gardens: Alpine Wonderland"Build It and They Will Come"
Excerpt from the book Ohme Gardens Alpine Wonderland.

On June 26, 1939, the Wenatchee Daily World printed a story headlined, "Ten-Year Plan Becomes a Miracle," complete with photographs.  The following weekend some five-hundred locals made it out to look at the man-made wonder.  Later that year, Herman bowing to the urging of his friends and admirers, finally opened the Gardens to the public.  Partially to offset the rising maintenance costs and partially to keep from being overrun, they charged twenty-five cents per carload.  This was 1939, and instead of keeping people away the Gardens attracted even more people!

Books are available at the Ohme Gardens Gift shop or online at www.ohmegardens.com.

Wednesday, August 12th
7:00 pm
Enjoy the magic of Shakespeare during a special presentation of The Comedy of Errors by the Short Shakespeareans at Ohme Gardens. Ohme Gardens is offering a special discounted entrance fee of $3 for this evening performance. In its 31st year under the direction of founder and director Sherry Chastain Schreck, the children's acting troupe will perform several scenes from this fast-moving farce. Full of sight gags and hilarious mix-ups, the play opens with a seafaring accident in the Adriatic Sea in which two sets of twins are separated as infants, each with one parent. One parent, one noble son, and one servant end up in Ephesus; the other threesome in Syracuse. Many years later, the identical twins and their parents are thrown together in Ephesus! Master and Servant keep meeting the other Master and Servant in total confusion! A colorful comedy for children and adults!
