Hello friends of Slow Food,

I have gotten a little more accustomed to the heat but my garden is dead and I can't seem to be outside between noon and 7pm.  I've been getting creative with indoor fun!

We expected a hot August (although we couldn't have imagined this heat) so we decided early last year that we'd host our annual event in late summer- heat be damned!  Oh and by the way we'd have it indoors.  We wanted an event that would encourage tasting, talking, and learning about  local and artisan food (and drinks) in an air conditioned environment.  The Quiz Bowl concept was the perfect combination of fun, food, and education so we jumped on the chance to host this with The Highball and make it one of the most unique, fun, and enlightening events of the summer. Come stay cool with us while you enjoy good food, exciting drinks, and mind-bending food trivia.

Also, we are still seeking a volunteer or two to help with our monthly happy hours. If you think this might be a good fit for your energy and expertise, contact Karla Loeb.

Anticipating the Quiz Bowl,

Good Stewardship
I wanted to take a moment to say a few words about non-profits, volunteering, farms, and the local food system.  Some people see Slow Food as an elitist organization because of its history. I wanted to speak to this issue as it relates to Slow Food Austin.  We are an all volunteer organization.  From the time our chapter was chartered we have worked to maintain a strong commitment to supporting local artisans, farmers, and businesses who uphold the values of slow food: Good, Clean, and Fair.  We are an educational organization so every event we host has an intention to teach about food.  We raise money at events for the primary purpose of sending that money back into the local food system through our events, donations, and scholarships. We require very little money to run our organization because we are led by volunteers and get community support.  I say all this because I want our members and supporters to know that we strive to be good stewards of everything that is given to us- time, money, food, information, etc.  I'd also like to remind you to do the same as members of our community. Whether you are at one of our events or just out for dinner, think about how you can be a good steward of your resources to support a local food system and a local economy.  Thanks for listening, Sara Weber, Slow Food Austin President.
