Welcome to our monthly newsletter.

March is the month of LUCK right?

Well I consider myself lucky to be living in Austin where slow food is a way of life for many of us.  We're all lucky to have the opportunity to be involved in great events like Slow Food Austin's monthly happy hour, our educational slow sessions, and our enlightening farm tours.  Stay tuned for all the details about our spring events.

We try to keep you informed about other food happenings in town but if we are missing something that is coming up and you think our newsletter readers should know about it, please send Katie Lopez an email.  We may not be able to include everything (because Austin is a food-busy town) but we'll do our best.

If you are interested in volunteering to help with board responsibilities, don't hesitate to email me

On a personal note, I wanted to share with you about my profound reminder of LOVE in February.  My father passed away on Feb. 15th.  In addition to my loss I heard of other people experiencing loss, challenges, and struggles.  This all sounds like the opposite of LOVE but through my experience I've learned that difficult times can be an important reminder of love and compassion while also helping us refine our priorities. My loss (and the outpouring of support from my community) has allowed me to appreciate life more. I wanted to take this opportunity to remind you to live this day mindfully and with intention ~ try to do this as often as you can.  Thanks for being such a wonderful community where thoughtful choices about life (especially food) are encouraged and respected.  Hug someone you love today!

Mindfully and with intention,
Sara Weber

Bee The Change

Slow Food Presents: Bee the Change

Join our hive as we watch Vanishing of the Bees, a documentary described by the press as the "most important film since An Inconvenient Truth." Following the story for three years, Vanishing of the Bees, narrated by Oscar-nominated Ellen Page chronicles the innermost thoughts and feelings of beekeepers and scientists as they fight to preserve the honeybee and make it through another day. Combining interviews from around the world, animation, 50's educational films, and breathtaking nature cinematography, Henein and Langworthy present not just a story about Colony Collapse Disorder, but a platform full of solutions, encouraging audiences to be the change they want to see in the world.

Space is limited so please  RSVP to anneh@slowfoodaustin.org.

Sign a petition to help Bees today!

Slow Food USA has recently launched a campaign to pressure the EPA to take action on the bee disappearance.  The EPA has been dragging its feet because of strong lobby from the pesticide companies.  We need to counter the pesticide lobby's pressure and hold the EPA to that commitment, by sending them a message they can't ignore:

FoodThink

How our food is made, where our food comes from and what our food does to us, taps into a lot of the pressing political issues and challenges of the 21st century, like peak oil, globalization, illegal immigrants and worker's rights, environmental and health issues.

This book club is dedicated to reading and discussing the work of authors that write about food and whose books relate to political issues of our life time. We meet about every other month on a Sunday afternoon at 4.30 pm at Book People downtown. To join and for more information, go to:

Green Gate Farm Camps for Adults and Kids

Green Gate Farms
Green Gate Farms, a family-run organic farm eight miles east of Austin, is hosting its popular camps again this year. Though the complete schedule hasn't been posted on their website, we've heard the following:

The next session of Kids Farm Camp will be held during Spring Break (March 14-18, 9:00-3:30 with before/after care option, 8:00-5:30).

In this historic farm setting, children help grow organic food and explore the farm. Activities include: planting and harvesting, taking care of the 150 animals, presentations from area experts (e.g., beekeeping, cooking, composting), swap blanket and plenty of time to relax and enjoy the farm. Camp
ends with a potluck dinner on Friday, where kids harvest and prepare a dish to share with their family.

Each session is open to only 20 children, ages 6-12, so don't wait to reserve your place. Cost is $325/ week, 9:00-3:30. Discounts given for siblings and GGF CSA members. Scholarships need funding so you can support camp even if you don't have children. Contact, greengatefarms@gmail.com; See www.greengatefarms.net.
