clarkartOklahomans for Equality Continue "First Thursday" Art Opening and Exhibit with Creations from Local Artist Nicholas K. Clark

Continuing the monthly showcase of local artists at the Equality Center (621 E. 4th Street in Downtown Tulsa), Oklahomans for Equality will feature Tulsa Artist Nicholas K. Clark with an opening show and reception on Thursday, August 6th from 6-9pm and continuing throughout the month of August.

Nicholas's work is a direct reflection of his optimistic personality. From vivid oranges to metallic silvers highlighted by passionate reds, his art displays a mastery of color that cannot be taught. His mediums vary from acrylics to oils and focus on creating depth through layering and application of rich texture.  Nic's works fall into three categories: contemporary figure studies, pop art and expressionistic color studies.. "I pull my inspiration from fashion and music and I love working with figures because they are always so challenging - the detail of a hand, the curves of a body and the capturing of natural movement and expression."

Toby Jenkins, President of Oklahomans for Equality is pleased to announce that Merritt's Bakery has modified their policy and will now allow customers to submit pictures of same gender couples expressing affection for the purpose of being depicted on a cake.

Christian Merritt, the director of day to day operations for Merritt's Bakery stated in a telephone interview today that "Merritts will be willing to do for every customer what it has been willing to do for one customer."

As a kind gesture of this new policy Christian Merritt had a huge rainbow decorated cake delivered on Tuesday afternoon to the Dennis R. Neill Equality Center.  Oklahomans for Equality thanks Merritt's Bakery for the thoughtful reconsideration of a policy that restricted Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender patrons and their supportive allies from enjoying all of the company's customer services. We also thank Merritt's Bakery for the beautiful cake.

Equality has never tasted so delicious!

Oklahomans for Equality applauds President Barack Obama's plan to award America's highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, to Harvey Milk, one of the country's first openly gay elected officials.  The award will be accepted at a White House ceremony August 12 by Stuart Milk, the nephew of the late San Francisco Supervisor and civil rights activist.

"We are thrilled President Obama is honoring Harvey Milk with the Medal of Freedom.  His inclusion sends a positive message to the nation that the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community is a vital part of our nation's strength.  We hope that his message will continue to inspire members of our community to seek elected offices and serve openly in our communities and nation." says, OkEq Vice President Paul Allen.

American tennis great Billie Jean King, who is openly lesbian, and Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts, who has championed LGBT equality throughout his political career, also will receive the Presidential Medal of Honor.

Accomplished in fields ranging from sports and art to science and medicine to politics and public policy and representing a diversity of backgrounds, the White House announcement said the recipients were selected for their work as "agents of change."

"Each saw an imperfect world and set about improving it, often overcoming great obstacles along the way," Obama said. "Their relentless devotion to breaking down barriers and lifting up their fellow citizens sets a standard to which we all should strive."

Oklahomans for Equality challenges the LGBT community and our supportive allies to follow the example of Harvey Milk and continue our fight for equality for all LGBT citizens.
