Seasonal Activity Guide Our Autumn & Winter Activity Guide is filled with fun programs and classes for the cooler months ahead. Choose from arts, dance, leisure and learning, aquatics, youth/adult sports, senior programs and more. The guide also has information on volunteer opportunities, community recycling, and upcoming special events. Take a Trip to Apple Hill or Nevada City Thanks to a grant from The Nell J. Redfield Foundation, fun day trips for adults are back. First is the popular Apple Hill location near Placerville, Calif. on Oct. 18 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It's a great place to shop for apple-theme treats and crafts, and enjoy the bounty of apple orchards and pumpkin patches. Next is a Victorian Christmas in Nevada City, Calif. on Dec. 8 from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Nevada City's landmark historic district is transformed back in time with Christmas melodies and costumed characters taking visitors to another place and time. Participants will be transported by charter buses. The cost is $40 per person per trip. Financial assistance is available for seniors age 50+. Register for Youth Basketball League by Nov. 10 All skill levels can take part in this popular league that emphasizes sportsmanship, skill development and FUN for boys and girls in 3rd - 6th grade. The cost is $96 or $80 for residents of Sparks. The fee includes team photo, individual photo and reversible mesh jersey. Practice begins Nov. 29 and games will be held Jan. - Feb. 2011 at Alf Sorensen Community Center and Mendive Middle School. Register online at www.sparksrec.com. Youth & Adult Karate For parents still looking for an indoor activity for their child, karate classes might just be the thing. Lessons are also offered for adults, so karate can be a great activity for the entire family to enjoy. Instructor Chuck Valentine has been teaching in the Reno-Sparks area for 40 years and is a fifth-degree black belt master. Both youths and adults will have the opportunity to progress in belt ranks from white through black. Youth classes are held on Tuesdays at 7 p.m. and adult classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. at the Recreation Gym. The cost is $36 ($30/residents) for youths and $48 ($40/residents) for adults. Details: 353-2376.

Learn the Art of Playing the Harp Beverly Colgan, principal harpist for the Reno Philharmonic, is the instructor for a four-week course geared for ages 10 and older. Students can expect to start playing the harp right away with a selection of simple songs that everyone can learn together. The next session begins on Tues., Oct. 12 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Alf Sorensen Community Center. The cost is $150 ($125/residents) which includes the workshop and harp rental. Volunteers are needed for the Adopt-A-Park program to help with the maintenance of neighborhood and community parks. A majority of the work consists of removing weeds and trash, and doing any necessary painting and playground care.The program promotes civic responsibility, community spirit, pride and camaraderie.
