Truckee River Cleanup Day  Truckee River Cleanup Day
Every year the City of Sparks teams with Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful and other local organizations to help create a cleaner, more beautiful region. One such effort is the annual Truckee River Cleanup Day. This year's event will be held on Saturday, Sept. 25 from 8:30 a.m. to noon. There are more than 10 cleanup sites located along the river for volunteers to choose from, with a specific project list for each. A volunteer appreciation barbecue will be held at Rock Park following the event. Mini Basketball LeagueRegister for Mini Basketball League by Sept. 9 Give your child the opportunity to learn the skills and fundamentals of basketball and play games with a team during this exciting program geared for boys and girls in Kindergarten through 2nd grade. One-hour games/practices will take place between 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 14 to Oct. 21 at the Alf Sorensen Community Center, 1400 Baring Blvd. The cost is $54 or $45 for Sparks residents. Details: 353-2385.
Senior Body Conditioning is Back Staying physically active and exercising is important at any age and it's never too late to begin. To help those over age 55 maintain a healthy lifestyle, the Sparks Parks and Recreation Department is once again providing a weekly body conditioning class at the Alf Sorensen Community Center. Participants will improve balance, functional strength and increase flexibility in a fun, relaxed environment. The one-hour class is held on Mondays and Thursdays at 10:45 a.m. The cost is $34 ($28 for Sparks residents) or $4.50 for drop-in. Details: 353-2385. 
Dog Obedience Training Curb your dog's bad habits and establish good conduct through a six-week obedience class taught by professional dog trainer, Guy Yeaman. Your dog will learn the commands of sit, stand, stay, heel and master other commands. Classes are held Mondays from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the  Recreation Gym, 98 Richards Way. There is still time to register for the current session which runs through Oct. 4. Current shot record, training collar, and fabric or leather leash required. Register online at www.sparksrec.com or call 353-2376.
Adult Dodgeball & Kickball  Registration is open for the City of Sparks Adult Kickball and Dodgeball Leagues. You don't need years of experience to play, and you don't have to be in great physical shape. Neither sport requires any expensive equipment - just a pair of tennis shoes, enthusiasm and a willingness to have fun! Games will be held in October and November - Sunday evenings for Dodgeball and Monday evenings for Kickball. Register at the Larry D. Johnson Community Center, 1200 12th St. through Sept. 23. The cost is $225 per team for Dodgeball (6 players) and $350 per team for Kickball (10 players). Details

 Volunteers are needed for the Adopt-A-Park program to help with the maintenance of neighborhood and community parks. A majority of the work consists of removing weeds and trash, and doing any necessary painting and playground care.The program promotes civic responsibility, community spirit, pride and camaraderie.
