3650 Lepus Dr. - Spanish Springs | Bitterbrush Park There is a new park in Sparks offering residents yet another place to play and soak in the beauty of Northern Nevada. Bitterbrush Park, located in Spanish Springs, features a design that entails more than 2 acres, with almost 1 acre devoted to turf in a flat, open area to encourage all kinds of play. Park amenities include a basketball court and shade canopy with picnic tables. Two sets of playground equipment will soon be installed - one geared toward children ages 2 to 5 and the other for kids ages 5 to 12. Bitterbrush Park was paid for by developer-impact fees. The park connects to the regional trail, so it's a nice rest stop for those traveling along the trail. Whether you're searching for the perfect picnic spot, a new playground for the little ones or a place to play basketball, Bitterbrush Park offers up an array of options for residents. |
Farmer's Market Wraps Up Season
on Aug. 19 There are only two Thursdays left to shop for fruits and vegetables straight from the farm at the Hometowne Farmer's Market on Victorian Square in downtown Sparks. In addition to fresh produce, the market has a tasty variety of international food and beverage items, packaged foods, unique arts and crafts, assorted flowers, fun for kids and live entertainment. Event hours are 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. A free shuttle service is available from Legends to Victorian Square from the mall's shuttle stop located between The Gap and Banana Republic. The shuttle begins transporting guests at 4:30 p.m. on approximately the half hour, and the last shuttle departs from C St. near Victorian Ave. back to Legends at 9:30 p.m. More event details |
Summer Water Fun With the summer season quickly winding down, there are only a few weeks left to take advantage of the outdoor pools located in Sparks. The pools at Deer Park (1700 Prater Way) and Oppio Park (2355 18th St.), offer all ages an afternoon of fun in a picturesque setting. Deer Pool is open Wed. - Sun., 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. through Aug. 29. Oppio Pool is open Tues. - Thurs., 1:15 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. through Aug. 26. Cost: Youth (under 18 yrs.) - $3.50; Adult (18 yrs. - 54 yrs.) - $6; Senior (55 yrs. & older) - $4; Family (up to 6 members) - $15. |
 Are You Ready for Some Football? NFL Flag Football is the premier youth football league for boys and girls ages 6 to 14. The program provides young players a fun and exciting opportunity to engage in non-contact, continuous action while learning lessons in teamwork, dedication and discipline. Participants are taught the fundamental skills of passing, receiving, running and defense. It's a great way to meet new friends while having fun learning the sport. The program will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Mon./Wed./Fri., Sept. 13 - Nov. 5 at Sparks Middle School and Shadow Mountain sports complex. Cost: $84 ($70 for residents of Sparks). The fee includes a reversible NFL jersey, team and individual pictures, and a certificate from the NFL Flag Football Program. Scholarship assistance is available for eligible households. New Volleyball League for Girls Girls in 3rd - 8th grade are going to dig a new volleyball league available this fall. Dig It! is designed to be fun for all levels of players. A prior knowledge of volleyball is not required. The first four practices feature a group clinic where new players learn volleyball basics, such as serving, passing, setting, spiking, rotation and rules of the game. Participants will be split into three groups: 3rd - 4th grade, 5th - 6th grade, and 7th - 8th grade. The program will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Mon./Wed., Sept. 27 - Nov. 10 at the Alf Sorensen Community Center. Cost: $96 ($80 for residents of Sparks). The fee includes a uniform top, pictures and tournament. Scholarship assistance is available for eligible households. Registration opens on August 16. Call 353-7780 for details. |

Volunteers are needed for the Adopt-A-Park program to help with the maintenance of neighborhood and community parks. A majority of the work consists of removing weeds and trash, and doing any necessary painting and playground care.The program promotes civic responsibility, community spirit, pride and camaraderie.
