Story of the Week
Athletic Team Talk at
Whittier High School

  Greetings!

This week, 15 students on the Track Team at Whittier High School decided to run for Jesus.

Just before practice on Wednesday afternoon, the WHS track coach turned the team over to several athletes from Biola University. 3 runners fr om the women's track team at Biola shared their stories with 30 girls on the Whittier track team.

Kelsey, Nichelle, and Jan are runners on the Biola University Track Team. Even though they were excellent athletes respected by their friends, they shared a secret with most high school students - feeling deep insecurity and isolation. But then that changed when they met Jesus.

One said "I gave my life to Christ and that changed everything. I run now for Christ, I run for a different reason." They shared a different "after-Christ" experience that made the girls hunger for what they were missing.

Team Talk at Whittier
Matt shares his story with the guys track team at Whittier HS.
You can see the girls listening to Kellee in the background.

After they shared their stories, Kellee Popp - CSP staff - set up to give a gospel presentation. "It's hard to get up and be honest when on the outside it looks really good but on the inside there's a lot more going on. Maybe that's where you're at: maybe your miserable on the inside. Maybe you've never thought about any of this, but you want more"

She told the students that everyone was free to go; 10 students left at that point, but the 20 that stayed wanted to hear more.

Kellee explained the gospel to them in basic terms and gave them a chance to respond. When she prayed the sinners prayer, 15 students praying along with her, out loud!

Every student who stayed was given several copies of the gospel of John. (Kellee offered them 1, but they asked for more to give to friends and family.) Each of the girls who prayed on Wednesday gave the Biola Athletes some contact info and they'll connect with them later on.

After the talk, one of the students came up to Kellee crying: "I'm the only Christian on my team and it's been really hard. You just shared the gospel in a way I haven't been able to yet. Now I get to follow up with my friends!"

Kellee was excited about the opportunity. "The gospel is so simple, and they just hadn't heard it!"
