Insider's Link to Productivity Newsletter         September 2010

The fall season is a time when many of our clients begin working on their Strategic Team Plan for 2011. Teams come together and celebrate their accomplishments as they align on a vision for the future. We are honored to be part of this experience and to watch as our clients transform not only their lives, but also their organizations.

In this edition of the Insider's Link to Productivity, we examine accountability with John Wittry, McGhee Partner and Executive Consultant, as he explores the reasonable stories people tell themselves, which can negatively impact their results. He offers advice for what we can do differently to be accountable to ourselves and to others. In a blog post by Jennifer Wilmoth, McGhee Consultant, we review best practices for how someone in a support role can set boundaries by saying "no" while still being of service to the organization.

Strategic Team Plan for 2011

McGhee blog

As the fall season approaches, many of us start to realize that we have only a few short months left to accomplish our remaining Meaningful Objectives. If we've completed strategic next actions throughout the year to drive our objectives and if we've discussed course-correcting during routine accountability meetings, then our year-end journey becomes nothing more than steering a steady ship into dock.

However, for those of you who do not currently have an Objective Accountability Program in place, you may find that you cannot possibly accomplish all the things you had hoped to get accomplished this year. For you, the fall season may bring about anxiety and blame as you scramble to get things done. If this sounds familiar, we'd like to help. Contact us.

In the coming weeks, our Leadership Team here at McGhee will begin creating a Strategic Team Plan for us to use in 2011. During the three-day planning session, they will celebrate the company's accomplishments as well as reflect on what could have been done differently, so that we can all learn from our mistakes as we head into 2011. In addition to establishing Meaningful Objectives and the associated Supporting Projects for each, they'll also create a plan for cascading those goals down through the organization. As the session comes to a close, the Leadership Team will have metrics in place for each objective, which will allow us to track progress on a weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis. These metrics will help keep all of us on-track with our goals next year and help ensure that the company will continue to grow during a still tumultuous economic time. Does Your Mind Double as a To-Do List?

Keeping a lot of information in your head can not only affect your ability to focus and to stay present, but it can also impact your ability to manage your commitments. It is nearly impossible to prioritize tasks when you’re organizing them in your head. Furthermore, you cannot complete a commitment that you cannot remember, and for some of us, the mind is not a reliable reminder system.

The purpose of the Clearing the Mind Exercise is to empty your mind of all the to-do’s you’ve been harboring in your head.

by: John Wittry, McGhee Partner & Executive Consultant

Being accountable to what I said I would do gives me a feeling of satisfaction, accomplishment, and contributes to my sense of well-being. Not being accountable to what I said I would do gives me a feeling of disappointment, frustration, and eventually anger for having not achieved the goal. Think of a time when you set a goal for yourself, stayed accountable, and achieved it. The sense of accomplishment lifts you up, doesn’t it? It also gives you the confidence to achieve more goals. Now, think of a time when you set a goal, did not stay accountable, and failed to reach the goal. It probably set up a negative spiral of events.

by: Jennifer Wilmoth, McGhee Consultant

A common concern around managing interruptions surfaced during a recent one-on-one Personal Information Management (PIM) session with an executive administrator when she said with resignation, “But I cannot not say yes.” Her concern was if she said “no” she wouldn’t be supporting those around her and it would seem as though she “wasn’t being a team player.” Based on my expertise, working with all levels of administrators, and also from previously being an executive administrator to our CEO, Sally McGhee, I believe that in actuality the opposite is true: It’s when we stop trying to get it all done and complete the most important things first, we truly contribute to the team.
