MART: After Five ushers in fall semester
at Drury Pool Art Center Gallery

Dacre
Drury Pool Art Center Gallery, 940 N. Clay St., presents MART: After Five during the Sept. 7 Art Walk. "MART" has deeper meaning beyond its use as a digital acronym for Drury's 5-year-old summer master's degree program in studio art. To its current participants - faculty and students - MART is a supportive community of committed artists similarly engaged in the art-making process. The works in this exhibition began with a compelling idea - compelling enough to create for it a "real" form in order that it might be contemplated and possibly understood. The willingness to experiment, so central to MART, is manifest in the diversity of qualities and intentions one can observe in these collected artifacts.         Fresh Gallery, 400 W. Walnut, presents Featured Artists Karla Breeding Trammell and Alicia Farris in September. Karla, a founding member of Fresh Gallery, grew up in the East Central Arkansas Delta. A bachelor of fine art graduate of the University of Arkansas, Trammell moved to Springfield in 1994. She has had several one-woman shows of her two-dimensional art, receiving national recognition in Washington, D.C., through Business and Professional Women USA. In 2000 she expanded into three-dimensional works with her original jewelry. Most recently, Karla's painting Aspen III was chosen for Watercolor USA 2012 at the Springfield Art Museum. Aspen III received a juror's cash award and was purchased by the Ella Carothers Dunnegan Gallery of Art in Bolivar for its permanent

collection. Alicia Farris received her bachelor's degree from
Bradley University in Peoria, Ill., and has studied with various renowned artists. In 1993, Alicia, her husband and their two children moved to Springfield where she found the beauty of the Ozarks to be enticing subject matter for her watercolors and acrylic paintings. Farris notes, "I always have one hand on my camera, especially when in a crowd. I'm not looking to go home and paint someone's portrait; rather, I love to try and recreate an emotion and an imagined personality of an unfamiliar subject." While her works has qualities of realism, she is often more driven by the use of color and light than strictly by form. Alicia is currently a member of Springfield Regional Arts Council, Springfield Visual Arts Alliance, Missouri Watercolor Society, signature member of St. Louis Watercolor Society, Springfield Plein Air, and is a Juried member of Best of Missouri Hands. www.freshgallery.org (417) 862-9300 Open 11 a.m.-6 p.m. T-Sat
Future Ghosts delves into the hidden emotions
between reality and the subconscious at Good Girl Art
From Future Ghosts by Megan Frauenhoffer
From Future Ghosts by Megan Frauenhoffer

Good Girl Art Gallery, 325 E. Walnut St., Ste. 101, presents Future Ghosts by Megan Frauenhoffer. "My art explores emotions that hide between reality and the subconscious. I am interested in the particular emotional moments that become their own entity, taking control and shaping our being," Megan says. "My prints and drawings illustrate different reveries reflecting on the effects of awkwardness, confusion, anger, grief, and loneliness. These moments of reflection are infused with fantastical tales culturally embedded from our childhoods. I use folktale allusions to connect to wider understanding of struggle and growth as well as reinvent the story's outcome. Within these new phantasms, animals, spirits, doppelgangers, anthropomorphic figures, hybrid monsters, and heroic figures collide. Often in the series, a metamorphosis occurs that empowers or overwhelms the figure. The use of creatures alludes to the individual's subconscious impulses and the primal animal nature in all of us." Join Obelisk Home to raise funds for children's hospitals
via Painting Hope with Gavyn Sky Sept. 7
Painting Hope Logo         Obelisk Home at the Inspired Commerce Building, 214 W. Phelps, presents Painting Hope with Gavyn Sky. Founded in 2011, Painting Hope with Gavyn Sky is a not-for-profit project that raises funds for local and national children's hospitals. Award winning artist Gavyn Sky and local creative group, the Art Renegades, have been working with St. Jude patients and their siblings to create 30 one-of-a-kind works of art that are as unique as they are beautiful. Each child was given a canvas on which to tell their story. The children began the painting process and Gavyn completed it in his unique style. Sky's passion for this project is one that has been building for years. "Losing my mother to cancer was the most tragic thing I've ever been through, and even worse, there was nothing I could do to help her," said Sky. "These kids have their whole lives ahead of them. Maybe, with the healing power of art, I can help them in more ways than one."

Painting Hope The September Art Walk will be an evening of art, beer, wine, hors d'oeuvres and treats for the kids. 100 percent of all proceeds benefit both St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Mercy Hospital's Jane Pitt Pediatric Cancer Center. The paintings will be available for purchase on Sept. 7 and those not sold will be on display and available for purchase through Sept. 28. Minimum bids will start at $500; Buy It Now pricing is $3,000. Out-of-state bidders or those who cannot attend the event may call and place their bids with Obelisk Home. Art Walk champ Melissa J. Szymanski debuts Taking Flight,
a boundary-breaking exploration at OTC Fine Art Gallery
The Dog Show by Melissa J. Szymanski
The Dog Show by Melissa J. Szymanski

OTC Fine Art Gallery at The Gillioz, 325 Park Central East, Third Floor, presents Taking Flight, a show by Artist Melissa J. Szymanski. "Creating colored pencil drawings is a slow and intentional process which lends itself to very tight and controlled representational artwork," Szymanski says. "In working on the drawings for Taking Flight, I have tried to push my boundaries with

As the Crow Flies
As the Crow Flies

the medium and break out of that "pigeon hole." The result is a series of looser drawings that I cut out and rearranged, giving them a very sculptural quality." Szymanski's made her debut on the Art Walk last year, winning the Grand Prize at Art Walk's 10th Anniversary Art Contest and Exhibit, held at OTC Fine Art Gallery in October 2011. Entries are now being accepted for the 2012 contest; download the 11th Anniversary Art Contest & Exhibit Entry Form now. "Taking Flight relates to my experience of growing up and finding my way in the real world. Regardless of my age, I'm leaving the nest behind, and learning to fly, even if it's upside down," Szymanski says.

I flied, I flied
I flied, I flied!

"In my newfound freedom, I am questioning my participation in my own life. Will I be an active participant in determining my own destiny or an innocent bystander just sitting back and watching the events unfold? Will I fly or will I fall? My question for you as the viewer is simply this: 'Will you follow?'" (417) 447-8873 Open 9 a.m.-6 p.m. M-Th; 9 a.m.-3 p.m. F; and 9 a.m.-10 p.m. on First Fridays
