 First Friday Art Walk welcomes a brand new member in August! Art Inspired is located at 310 S. Campbell, adjoining Springfield Hot Glass Studio. Art Inspired is a document disposal and paper recycling business that turns paper pulp into art and other marketable items. Art Inspired debuts on the Art Walk Aug. 3 with Know Me for My Ability, featuring works by local artists with disabilities. Be sure to welcome Art Inspired to the Downtown Arts District! This month First Friday Art Walk is also partnering with the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks on the 4th Annual Bloody Battle of the Bands, beginning at 3 p.m. on First Friday at Jordan Valley Park, adjacent to Art Walk member The Creamery Arts Center. At this blood drive and free concert, those who donate blood will  vote for their favorite bands and singer/ songwriters, and receive a T-shirt, food and awesome swag bag including 2-for-1 entry into the Skinny Improv and 1984, plus entry into a variety of raffles. The area's best teen bands will compete for the grand prize: eight hours of recording studio time at Studio 2100. Concertgoers will vote for their favorite bands and for the brand new category of solo singer/songwriter. Participating bands include Diver City, For the Sake of Martyrs, A Prophet Without Honor, Proto Post-Post Revival, Surrender, Ultimate Evolution and The Wallshakers. Each band set is 20 minutes; solo sets in between bands are 8 to 10 minutes. Only those who register to donate blood can vote. One band will triumph ... but hundreds of lives will be saved in the Ozarks. The blood drive begins at 2 p.m.; bands start at 3; the event ends at 8. Fresh Gallery, 400 W. Walnut,
showcases The Craftsmanship of Carl Huser and The Fine Art of Debbie Reed during the Aug. 3 Art Walk. Carl Huser, known for his fascinating woodturning creations, has spent more than 60 years perfecting his passion. His interest developed as a young boy and it was nurtured by an old German woodworker named Bruno. Working in a medium that reveals the beauty of years - even centuries - under his craftsman's touch gives Carl a sense of satisfaction. Carl often salvages native wood from burn piles and landfills. Working with wood, he says, provides "a respite like none other." Carl's pieces, including bowls and vases, display a high level of craftsmanship and are at home in the simplest, and the most luxurious, settings. Debbie Reed, a native of Lubbock, Texas, who has made her home in Joplin for the last 25 years, is an artist working in watercolor, oils and mixed media. Debbie received her RN and BSN from the University of Nebraska, and then pursued her creative instincts to a degree in studio art from Missouri Southern State University. Debbie shares life's joys and wonders, as well as its sorrows and pains, through watercolors and oil. However, it is mixed-media projects that she enjoys most.
