If you can't make it this Friday, several Art Walk members -- including Fresh Gallery, Randy Bacon Studio and Gallery, Springfield Pottery, Abundant Life Covenant Church, DB Design, Inveno Health and more -- will be bringing all the art, music and entertainment of First Friday to the second Friday of the month as well! Running With the Engine:
The Fire Photography of Harry K. Garvin
Harry K. Garvin         Drury Pool Art Center Gallery, 840 N. Clay, presents Running With The Engine: The Fire Photography of Harry K. Garvin.
"At seven years of age I would run block after block after the Engine.  My father used to whip me enough to break any boy's heart, and his back too, because I would run with the Engine. There was no boy whipped more for it, but my father could never whip it out of me."
        - John A Cregier, New York Fire Department, 1882.
The exhibition title "Running With The Engine" comes from the days before motorized and horse-drawn fire apparatus when volunteers - men and boys in cities and towns across America - ran to fires pulling hand-operated pumps or engines.  The exhibition itself is a result of Garvin being embedded with the members of the Los Angeles Fire Department. A professional LA Harry K. Garvincinematographer and Steadicam operator, Garvin holds BA degrees in History and Economics from the University of South Carolina. He has been a motion picture camera and Steadicam operator on a variety of films and television shows. Don't miss Garvin's Artist's Talk 6-7 p.m. Feb. 4 during Art Walk. Good Girl Art takes on serious issues for women in February with The Locker and Flawed
Image from The Locker
The Locker
Good Girl Art Gallery, 325 E. Walnut St., Ste. 101,
presents two shows in February: The Locker by Delanie Cooper and Flawed by Amy Carroll. The Locker was inspired by the hundreds of photos discovered in a storage locker belonging to convicted serial killer Rodney Alcala, who lured in his victims by asking if he could take their pictures. Upon viewing these photos, "I felt haunted, but also inspired," Delanie said. "This collection was created to give respect to the victims, but also to let me explore loss

through my artistic abilities," she says. Flawed explores the unfortunate focus of women, and society, on their physical flaws - sometimes to the point of obsession and oftentimes to the point of poor self-image. "But what truly is flawed is our perceptions of ourselves and of beauty, and our society's standards of beauty," says Artist Amy Carroll. The women she has photographed - ordinary soft-in-the-middle, saggy, wrinkly and otherwise "flawed" women - in the end are awed by their own beauty as viewed through Amy's lens. "It changes the way each woman looks at herself, feels about herself, carries herself," Amy says. (417) 865-7055
