FROM THE CHIEF - AIRPLANE

As we start the New Year, there are always lessons to be learned that will make us better pilots. Flying should be fun, enjoyable but above all safe and it is you as PIC who has all of the responsibility. Unfortunately it is all too often the person in the left seat who is the weakest link and in the coming issues I will discuss topics and strategies to make sure you really are PIC...
In the coming months, I will use some of the critical mistakes made in the final moments of the tragic Air France disaster (see article below) to illustrate and educate.
Please check out the Popular Mechanics link http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/aviation/crashes/what-really-happened-aboard-air-france-447-6611877 for a synopsis of the crash of the Air France Airbus 330 that plunged into the Atlantic Ocean.

NEW YEAR, NEW NAME
Effective January 12, 2012, the National Flight Database ("NFD") will be getting a new name! The "NFD" will now be known as the Coded Instrument Flight Procedures ("CIFP") product. The new name more accurately reflects the value in the product.
COMING 2012: CNFs ON IAPS
Customers will soon see "CFxxx" named Computer Navigation Fixes (CNFs) on instrument approach charts and the Coded Instrument Flight Procedures product. These CNFs are being added to support RNAV systems that require a fix, but where no fix currently exists. Look for the addition of these CNF fixes to be ongoing through 2012.
Effective January 12, 2012, the hierarchy of procedure types for Terminal Procedures Publications will be changed to reflect new chart types and re-order existing chart types. |
