EAA Restores Harvey Field Wind TWind T construction
Wind T installed
The Wind T was removed from its support and disassembled early this year. Over the years the original wood had rotted away, the corrugated translucent yellow fiberglass covering had disintegrated, and the internal light system had become corroded. The fiberglass material had not been manufactured since 2004, and translucent yellow acrylic sheets had an estimated cost of more than $1200. It was decided to rework the frame and cover it with fabric, use rope lights to outline the T, as well as add red, green, and white navigation lights.

Fabric tends to vibrate on flat surfaces, instead of wood, ribs were fabricated to give the body and wings a curved contour. New steel tube structure was added to support an access hatch and provide the wing/fuselage intersection support. The bearing support structure was reinforced, because the original was too flexible. The tail section was reworked to give a smooth contour, and more support on the tail plan form. The balance of the structure was cleaned, painted, and made ready for the fabric application. The whole structure was covered in Ceconite, protected with UV coating, and painted yellow. EAA Chapter 84 enjoyed the project, and hopes that the flying community will make good use of the restored Wind T.

Notes from FW Chief Instructor

Peter Swift, Chief Pilot
Let's look at airspeed. We have all been exposed to the various comments from our CFI; "watch your airspeed; you're too low, too high, slow down, watch out...." What drives that needle? Let's start on how it operates. The airspeed indicator is classified as part of the pitot static system and is the only indicator out of this group (airspeed, altimeter and vertical speed) that requires BOTH a static air source and pitot air. Remember, airspeed measurement is actually a differential pressure measurement between static air from the static air source - Ps and total or ram air from the pitot tube - Pt . Mechanically, the moveable diaphragm, connected to the gears that drive the needle is connected to the pitot tube while the air around the outside of the diaphragm is exposed to static air. Thus as you go faster and more air is "rammed" down the pitot tube it expands the diaphragm and drives the airspeed needle to a higher reading. Less air pressure in the pitot tube and now the static air on the outside of the diaphragm can compress the diaphragm and the airspeed indicates a lower speed.

You can now clearly see why we need to check as part of the preflight that the pitot tube is clear as is the static source. Air needs to be able to easily travel into and out of the airspeed indicator.

What indication do you get on the airspeed indicator if the pitot tube is blocked? Well looking back at the design, a blocked pitot tube will not allow any air into the inside of the diaphragm. Whatever air is inside the diaphragm is stuck there. Yes, BUT on most GA aircraft remember, the pitot tube also has a small drain hole located at the point where it makes a right angle turn. This is to allow water that is carried into the tube by the ram air to escape, bleed out so as not to get inside the diaphragm. This hole will, with a blocked pitot tube also allow the air in the pitot plumbing to escape and equalize with the surrounding static air pressure. You now have equal pressure on both sides of the diaphragm, zero differential pressure, so the airspeed indicator will always read zero...

On the other hand, a blocked static source traps air in the line at whatever pressure it happened to be when the static source became blocked. Visualize that diaphragm again.....now there is a changing pressure on the inside from the pitot tube, and it is trying to reference against a constant pressure on the outside. This will show on the airspeed indicator as a lower and lower airspeed as you climb and an increase in airspeed as you descend.

Check the pitot tube and the static source before EVERY flight and you should never have to see any of these errors...
