From the desk of Fixed Wing Chief Instructor Peter Swift ~
Spring is in the air.....And maybe this mild weather is just a tease to keep us smiling! Take advantage of these clear and warmer days to enjoy Washington state's beauty. Jefferson Co. (0S9) is always a scenic flight with the coffee shop right by the transit parking area. Only 30 NM away from Harvey on a heading of 271 and about a 20 minute flight. For a really spectacular flight try the San Juans. Friday Harbor (FHR) is 53 miles away on a heading of 298. Park at the North end of the field and walk into town. On this flight you can point out to your friends the many islands of the San Juans and gain practice transiting Class C airspace. Remember to contact Whidbey on 120.7 before entering and as long as they repeat back to you your N number, you are good to go. This is the definition of establishing radio contact and is applicable to Class C and D airspace. Review 3-2-4 and -5 in the AIM for definitions and procedures. Remember the AIM (Airmans Information Manual) establishes basic flight information and ATC procedures whereas flight rules established by the FAA that we are all subject to and must observe are in FAR part 91. Specifically for Class C airspace this is 91.130.
