A NOTE FROM... THE CHIEF
Autumn ~ A time of cooler days, chilly nights and an opportunity to practice, maintain or just experience actual IFR flying.

Come out to the airport and spend some time with our excellent CFI's who can guide you through an instrument approach in actual IFR conditions. Nothing like breaking out of the clouds to see the runway right in front of you. And now with the trees looking very colorful in their autumn splendor, it truly brings back the magic of flight.
The GPS approach to Harvey Field has been operational for some time now, and locally, there is now a new GPS approach into Eastsound/Orcas Island, ORS. Give them a try.
Before the frost and snow appear, now is also a good time to get those 3 take-offs and landing at night required to maintain your night currency. Remember, per 61.57 3(b) if you plan to carry passengers at night (defined as one hour after sunset to one hour before sunrise) then you must be night current per this section of the regulations.
Looking forward to seeing you at the airport and as you have questions or would like additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

MEET JESSE HALLENBECK...    NEW STAFF CFI AT SNOHOMISH FLYING SERVICE

"Hello! I am proud to be a new member of the Snohomish Flying Service team!  First a bit about myself: I've grown up in Washington my whole life, and moved to the Monroe/Snohomish area when I was nine. I began my flight training at eleven years old, and took part in many flight camps when I was young, including our very own Snohomish Flying Service Aviation Youth Camp in 2000. After earning my private certificate at eighteen, I went to Central Washington University to earn my degree in Flight Technology. My other interests besides aviation are technology and web design, as well as film production and marketing. It is my long term goal to become a professional leader within the airline industry, and find ways to merge my other interests with my love of aviation. I feel extremely privileged to be a part of the SFS team, and can't wait to begin giving back to the community which has supported me for so many years!"

The spring of 2005 and grandpa had just earned his private pilot certificate that fall of 2004.  It was his grandson's birthday and he was about to take his first ride in a small plane.  Grandpa was anxious to show off his new avocation.  The day was sunny and bright and the ride was near flawless. Everyone had a great time.
Mel has taken all his training at Snohomish Flying Service and has witnessed all of his instructors go on to other careers in aviation. Mel has lived on Clearview Hill for 39 years. All of his four grown children graduated from Snohomish High school and live within 25 miles of home.  He has six grand children ages 4 to 15.  He has been married 45 years to his high school sweetheart. They are graduates of R. A. Long HS in Longview.
Mel is on duty three days each week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) leaving long weekends open for the joys of his family, spending time with golf, fishing, hunting, and playing.

The 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games will be held in Vancouver, BC this coming January 29, through March 24, 2010. Associated with the Olympics will be some very restricted airspace surrounding Vancouver, BC and the Whistler Athletes Village. The restricted airspace will consist of two conjoined rings, centered on Vancouver's Airport (CYVR) and Whistler Athletes Village. Each ring is 60 miles in diameter, with a portion of the southern ring reaching into the US airspace. The FAA will be mailing a flyer to the pilots in the NW Mountain Region explaining the restrictions and how to find the NOTAMS and Airman's Information Publications. There will also be three large airspace symposiums held in the area, two in the Seattle area and one in Bellingham. Smaller airspace briefings will be held around the region in the months of November and December. In the next few weeks the times and places for the seminars will be posted on
www.FAASafety.gov
The Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) covering the Olympics will be monitored by NORAD fighter aircraft and helicopters, all TFR violators will be intercepted. The best way to avoid violating the TFR is to be knowledgeable about the airspace restrictions and comply with the instructions.
