A Dream Itinerary

Having planned many trips to mainland China for clients but never for myself, I know exactly what I would do on my dream trip to the area.  Abercrombie & Kent has put it together for me in their 13 night Connoisseurs Escorted Journey entitled China's Living Heritage.

The tour has the following features:

  • 3 nights in Shanghai including a visit to the water village of ZhujiajiaoBanyan tree resort
  • Fly to the ancient cultural city of Lijiang, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and enjoy a 2-night stay at the Banyan Tree Resort
  • A picturesque drive thru Tiger Leaping Gorge with stops at the first bend of the Yangzi River and a Naxi village before arriving at Zhongdian on the Tibetan border for a 2-night stay
  • Xian for an in-depth visit to the Terra Cotta Warriors
  • Beijing for a 3-night stay featuring all the sights including an exploration of the Great Wall in a less-frequented section

Travel Tips fall

A new credit card is being used in Europe, Asia, and Latin America.  Chip and PIN replaces the credit card system we're used to--swiping a magnetic strip and signing a receipt.  EMV is an acronym for Europay, MasterCard and Visa, the developers of the technology.  EMV cards use a mircochip to authorize a transaction instead of the traditional signature.  So if you're a globetrotter, this card is a must have before you leave home. You will find you can use your EMV-enabled cards at more places, such as train station kiosks and vending machines.

U.S. banks have come out with trial runs of the chip-and-PIN cards.  Most of the cards will be chip-and-signature rather than chip-and-PIN but they will work in other countries.

If your bank doesn't offer one yet you can get a Travelex  pre-paid chip-and-PIN before you leave home.  Available in pounds or euros, you will lose some money in the exchange but at least you will be able to shop.

A New Russia Experience

Silversea Whisper

Silver Whisper

Discovering new sites, experiencing the local food and culture are favorite parts of travel.  Pre and Post cruise stays are one of the best ways to enjoy all the local scene has to offer and are available anywhere in the world.  Tour the city, explore the markets, eat at restaurants frequented by local residents and relax in luxury at your hotel.  This is a great way to enrich your vacation experience.  Don't rush to and from the airport, you will be missing all that the embarkation and debarkation cities have to offer.

An exciting, new and unique opportunity is now being offered by Silversea in Russia.  St. Petersburg and some of the treasures it has to offer can be seen while on a day trip, but nothing compares to several days just exploring the city.  In addition you can visit Moscow which is now a number one spot on the travelers list.

Russia has never been so accessible.  Stay as many days as you wish, explore unhurried and in depth by adding a 3-night stay in Moscow and  2 nights  in St. Petersburg to a fabulous 7-night Silversea cruise.  Don't let this opportunity pass you by; now is the time to discover Russia's hidden jewels! Fresh cilantro stems

1.  In a bowl, mix crab, cheese and onions with mayonnaise.

2.  Place 5 tortillas in a single layer on two 14"x17" baking sheets.

3.  Evenly cover tortillas with crab mixture to within 3/4" of edges.  Top each with one of the remaining tortillas.
