Reid Traveler Paul Himmelrich at the Blue Lagoon
|
Join other Reid Travelers on a round trip Reykjavik 8-day Tauck Tours cruise aboard the stylish Le Boreal, a yacht-like small ship, named "Best Newcomer of the year in 2010" for elegance, personality, eco-friendly technologies and the highest quality standards. All staterooms and suites have ocean views, and 95% have private balconies.
Iceland - a land of volcanoes and glaciers...epic sagas, heroic legends...puffins and whales and the northernmost golf
course in the world. Each day is one of contrasts and discovery, and in July and August temperatures range from
a high of 54 to a low of 46, plus continual daylight.
"Wonderful trip; Tauck should be commended! We thought Iceland was clean, pristine...we got to see mud-pots, hot springs, and geysers but the highlight was the puffins!" -Jean & Ann Root
There are ground operators offering land tours as well as cruise ships that stop in Iceland for a day, Silversea's Silver Explorer has several itineraries in 2012.

Portree, Isle of Skye, Scotland
is a port on this itinerary
|
Next June (2012), I will be hosting a sailing on the Regent Voyager from London to Reykjavik. This 10-day sailing includes ports in England, Ireland, Scotland and ending in Iceland. Belfast is on the rugged coast of Northern Ireland where the River Lagan flows to the Irish Sea and Kirkwall is one of the most attractive and well-preserved small towns in Scotland. Kirkwall is also home to many historical buildings, 17th -18th century houses and other unique architectural structure. Regent's all inclusive luxury experience has many complimentary shore excursions to enjoy in each port.

You will not want to miss out on extending your trip in Iceland. I can't wait to experience the clean nature and unpolluted water and air while floating in the Blue Lagoon! The sun only sets for about three hours giving you plenty of daylight to tour this must see destination. Come join me for this 10-night Celtic Charm itinerary!

Road Rules in other countries. Each country has its own traffic regulations. Keep in mind the following:
- Cell Phone Use. European nations have taken the lead in passing laws restricting the use of cell phones in motor vehicles. Nearly all European Union member states and several non-EU countries have banned the use of handheld cell phones in a moving motor vehicle, and several prohibit use of handheld phones while a vehicle's engine is running.
- Car seats. Children under four must use a suitable restraint system. Children between four and 12 cannot travel in the front unless using a suitable restraint system (varies by country).
- Traffic Violations. Fines issued on the spot so be sure to carry ample cash or a credit card. Ensure an official receipt is issued by the officer collecting the fine.
- Restricted Zones. In Italy many historic centers are only open to cars with special permits, a rule enforced with hidden cameras. In Athens cars with odd-numbered license plates are only allowed in the city center on odd-numbered dates (and vice versa). In central London drivers are subject to the city's $14-$19 congestion charge.
- Speed Limits. Limits range between 120 to 130 kilometers per hour (75 to 81 miles per hour). The Netherlands recently reduced speed limits to 100 km (62 miles per hour) to reduce air and noise pollution.

Experience Alaska
This summer I shared a wonderful adventure with my group to Alaska cruising the Inside Passage on the beautiful Holland America Oosterdam. This was my fourth visit to Alaska.
Prior to sailing we spent a couple nights in Seattle enjoying the riverfront and eating delicious clam chowder. We visited the EMP Museum where you can make your own video, very educational and a lot of fun. We sailed away to explore beautiful Alaska, viewing glaciers, whales, birds, bears and much more.
Alaska is a great family destination. Everyone at Reid Travel has been to Alaska and we recommend exploring Alaska(cruises and cruise tours). It's time to start thinking about 2012. Did you know that Russia sold Alaska to the U.S.A. for $7,200,000 in gold on October 18, 1867.

Unique Stops in Poland

Wawel Castle
|
I have just completed a visit to Warsaw and Krakow. Unlike Warsaw, which was nearly destroyed during World War II, Krakow escaped the destruction and is Poland's prime tourist attraction. Settled in 1038, Krakow became the capital of Poland. Polish monarchs took up residence in Wawel Castle, the seat of Polish Kings from the 11th to the early 17th century.
Long heralded as "The New Prague", Krakow is now well established as a major tourist destination--a must-see for any visitor to Eastern Europe. The city has largely been left intact since the Tartar raids of the 13th century, which accounts for the largely unspoiled Old Town (known in Polish as Stare Miasto) now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Laid out in 1257, the Rynek Glowny (Main Market Square) is one of the largest medieval market squares in Europe with numerous landmarks, museums, art galleries, theaters, shops, cafes, hotels and restaurants.
The Kazimierz district, for centuries a center of Jewish culture is undergoing a renaissance. There is a revival of lively art galleries, kosher restaurants, and cultural events.

Chapel of Saint Kinga, the largest among underground chapels in the Wieliczka Salt Mine
|
Auschwitz-Birkenau a thought provoking and important monument to the Holocaust, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site is about 30 miles away from Krakow.
Just a half hour from Krakow in the town of Wieliczka is the Wieliczka Salt Mine. The mine produced table salt from the 13th century until 2007 when salt prices were too low and mine flooding caused the end of commercial mining. However you can take a tour of the mine or even have a wedding there! Along with the historical importance, the carvings of monuments and altarpieces have earned it a place on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list.

If you're headed to any of these airports and are looking for a decent meal...your options are improving.
Atlanta Hartsfield Airport, Terminal E: One Flew South
The world's busiest airport is home to fine dining. One Flew South claims to serve "Southernational" food: global cuisine with a Southern style. All ingredients are local and fresh. Food includes soup, pasta, poultry, seafood, sushi, burgers, pork and beef. Wine and cocktails are available. My personal favorite is the "Pappy Van Winkle's Bourbon Layover"!
London Heathrow Airport (UK), Terminal 5: Plane Food
This popular restaurant, developed by famed chef Gordon Ramsay, serves breakfast through dinner. From pancakes, eggs and salmon in the morning to pasta, risotto, fish, lamb, poultry, pork and grain-fed steak in the evening, this edgy restaurant has something to please most anyone's appetite. Includes a full wine list and desserts ranging from cheesecake to braised pears.
JFK, Terminal 5 - Jet Blue
Arrive early as there are 23 innovative restaurants - certainly enough to whet your appetite-- with menus created by New York celebrity chefs.
Newark, Terminal A: Phillips Seafood
The popular Phillips Seafood has opened a new restaurant featuring a traditional Phillips menu: signature crab dishes, genuine Maryland style favorites and specialty drinks.
