Washington, N. C. Mission Team Builds New House for Local Family!

Villa Catalina Gains One Fine New Home
North Carolina group builds new house in Villa
During the first week in March, the Amigos mission house was filled with a vibrant group of North Carolinians. Despite the planning and packing that typically precedes a mission trip, the week was a culmination of months of fundraising. The team set themselves the ambitious goal of bringing in enough money to fund the building of a new house in Villa Catalina. Since Villa Santa Catalina was first built in 2005-2006, many of the families are growing out of their houses.  The new home is a welcome addition, as mom Mariluz, dad Arlen and little Kelling are able to move out of the cramped house which they shared with Mariluz's family. Keep in mind that the family survived Hurricane Mitch and just 5 years ago, resided in the Chinandega city dump! This mission group from North Carolina, pictured above, came full circle with them, by helping to construct the home alongside Arlen's family.

Come and replicate their experience with your group. Villa Catalina has space for more homes and you can add a happy new chapter to its short history.

The Amigos Fincas - Our Organic Laboratories

Our goal is healthy meals for young children.

Farm production and activity is booming at the Amigos Farms this month, as we test organic methods on our new tomato plants. By using compost as fertilizer, we are able to take organic matter that already exists on the farm to make material rich in nutrients for healthier and bigger fruits and vegetables.  Instead of using chemical insecticides and potentially harm the fields, our farm crew has created a mixture of the Neen tree leaf and vegetable oil as a soil friendly way to keep bugs away. The farm team is researching methods of organic farming by visiting other fincas (farms) in Nicaragua.

Farm 2In addition to the tomato plants, which will be ready for harvest in April, there are 450 plantains and 150 fruit trees that were planted last fall.  The plantains will begin producing in August 2009. With each tree producing a head of 50-60 plantains that's an estimated 25,000 plantains!  The finca boasts an exotic array of fruit trees, including avocado, mandarin orange, orange, lime, mango, coconut and mamones. These fragrant beauties will start to produce within the next couple of years. This bounty of wonderful food will provide healthy lunches for over the 550 students in our school feeding program each day.
Chicken Facts:
Our farms produce over 1200 eggs daily!  The Amigos Farm Team will soon be producing broiler chickens using organic methods. We'll keep you posted!
