DUGLAS MEZA Position: Well Drilling Team Leader Age: 29
Duglas put himself through school to become an Industrial Electrician, but around the Amigos office and mission house he is known as the "Master Handyman." He has been working for Amigos for over 4 years as an electrician, plumber, and well driller. In 2008, he was promoted to be the leader of the Agua for Christ Well Team, who travel throughout the country drilling wells for needy communities. Duglas says his favorite part of his job is "discovering water sources and seeing the happiness it brings to poor communities" and "the manner in which Amigos serves God by helping the people."

Greetings!
These past few weeks have been filled with exciting endeavors in several of our project areas. Goals are being reached, people are succeeding and we want you to know everything that is happening with your Amigos in Nicaragua. With the school year opening at Villa Catalina in a brand new building, a new well installed at a home for expectant mothers, and preventative health classes offered at our medical clinics, Amigos has started the New Year off with a bang!

School Grand Opening
125 students start fresh February 2nd was a big day for the 200 students in Villa Catalina! The 2009 school year brings a new 5-classroom school building, painted a happy Nicaraguan yellow. You can see from the photo that Professora Adelayda and her students already feel at home. The first school building, built in 2005, quickly overflowed and a temporary school made of plastic tarps somehow sufficed for 3 more years. The tent-school was home to several grade levels sharing the same cramped space. Though an over-crowded school is a good problem to have, we are relieved that students and teachers have adequate space to learn. Thank you to all who funded the school and helped build it from the ground up.

New Year, New Rig
Water is reached Our Well Team started off the New Year with a mighty, new well drilling rig. This powerful cable rig allows our team to drill through the thick rock found in many areas of Nicaragua, often the most poor and rural. To get an idea of how thick the rock can be, it took over 2 weeks to reach the water source at 150 feet. The process is long and tiresome, but the benefits are immense. Now, expectant mothers living in Casa Materna, a home for pregnant women, will have clean accessible water. We'll keep you updated on the quest to drill more successful wells!

Preventing Disease
Medical education We believe preventative health care is a key to healthy, happy families. This year, Amigos will focus intensely on community health classes that stress the importance of basic hygiene, preventing common diseases, and good nutrition. Our medical team continues to travel to 18 rural villages to care for the sick and administer these classes. We have seen how good health means increased school attendance and parents able to work to provide for their families. Our Doctors Tania, (shown above) and Dinorah, hope to maximize usage of the new Villa Catalina health care facility 7 days a week. | |
