Spotlight on Staff
This month we have a message from two of our dedicated staff who wear multiple
hats.
Nahid Elgadi has been with
Al-Bustan since summer camp '07 where she served as senior camp counselor and
drama assistant.
She is currently an
Americorp Volunteer and works as Program Assistant. She also teaches drama in our Andalusia
themed program at Feltonville School of Arts and Sciences.
Nehad Khader has been Education Program Coordinator
for over a year.
She is integral
to our
community outreach and researching our educational themes. This summer Nehad was also our Arabic and
dance teacher and this fall
s
he is teaching poetry at John Moffet Elementary
and Arabic
at Feltonville Intermediate.
Nahid and Nehad co-teaching weekend Arabic & Arts workshops in Fall '07.
Dear Friends,
Being staff at
Al-Bustan means that through our educational and artistic initiatives
we get
the opportunity to meet local teachers, principals, administrators and
musicians. Building bridges with the
community is the most rewarding experience for us. In particular we are thrilled by the opportunities to work with Philadelphia public
school students. This has been made possible largely by the vision and
commitment of Dr. Dennis Creedon, Administrator for Creative and Performing Arts at the School District of
Philadelphia. Without his leadership our programs could not reach such a diverse student population in the city.
Along with our expanded programing, our staffing has grown.
We welcome George A. Schwab, a highly talented graphic designer whose
work you
will see in the coming months, including our latest project: an Arab
music resource for educators with audio CD recorded by the MidEast
Ensemble and
an accompanying curriculum booklet. We are very
excited to complete this project shortly and make it available to music
teachers.
We are always looking for new people to join our team. Currently we are
building a mentoring
program at two public schools and would love to have college and post-college volunteers work
with the
students. If interested, please contact Nahid at nahid@albustanseeds.org.
We are also looking for a new
Americorp member to work full-time in 2009.
Nahid's residency ends in January and if you like what we do, consider
working with us! Perks that come with
being an Americorp volunteer include a monthly salary, health
insurance, and an educational award upon completing your year of
service. If you are interested please contact ASAP executive director Hazami
Sayed at hsayed@albustanseeds.org.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
