New and Improved Guest Book
Better user experience, more revenue

On average, almost 75% of all Guest Books are signed, with each receiving over 8 entries.  However, we think there is still opportunity to increase participation, content submission and online revenue.  To accomplish this, we've redesigned the Guest Book with the following objectives in mind:

  • more intuitive, consumer-friendly experience
  • improved design and navigation
  • better positioning and promotion of revenue generating products
A phased launch approach Guest Book Redesignwill begin January 8th with a national rollout currently scheduled for February.  You will receive more detailed communication about this product before it is launched in your market.

Funeral Home Industry Update

As the online obituary category evolves and new competitors take aim at the leading position of newspapers, it's important for newspapers to protect the category by offering a comprehensive portfolio of products to both consumers and funeral homes. Legacy.com, as the leader in online obituaries, is committed to identifying the products and opportunities that enable you to not only defend, but enhance your category position.

Competitive Update
Among the competitive threats to the newspaper, Tributes.com continues to be the most visible.  Their communications to the funeral home channel (including this piece distributed at the National Funeral Director trade show) clearly take aim at newspapers.  To date, however, they have not made substantial inroads in the funeral home channel.

New ways to strengthen your funeral home relationships
Many funeral homes now have websites and all are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of an online presence.  In our discussions with funeral homes, a clear theme emerged:  the desire to reduce confusion around online obituary products, i.e. the funeral home and newspaper have different Guest Books.  Funeral homes don't typically refer people to the newspaper Guest Book because there is no obvious funeral home association with the product.  In Q1, you will be able to offer funeral homes in your market a Guest Book program which will increase the likelihood of funeral homes  using your Guest Book.  This new program will provide funeral homes with several benefits, including the addition of the funeral home logo to the Guest Book.  More details on this program to come in Jan '09!
