Dear Colleagues,
Kirsten Jacobs from AAHSA recently wrote about a compelling presentation, "Connecting to the Outdoors and Health," at the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) Conference by Judy Kruger, an Epidemiologist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The idea was particularly noteworthy and we wanted to pass it on to you to consider using it with your community residents.
Kristen writes:
"Last week I had the pleasure of attending the ICAA (International Council on Active Aging) Conference in Orlando, Florida....
Consider using PhotoVioice, a participatory technique to capture many perspectives using images. Here's the process:
- Participants get a disposable camera and are trained on basic photo technique;
- Participants go into the community walking in pairs and taking photos of any topic;
- Participants carry a photo journal and document where and when the picture was taken.
Possible topics could include: Natural beauty, socializing, comfort within the community. PhotoVoice is currently used as a tool for social change and communication, but how could you modify the technique within your community? PhotoVoice (or a similar process) could give residents, families and staff a new voice." What a lovely way to engage a group of residents to provide witness to and document the world around them, while at the same time facilitating an artistic/creative and social endeavor. Hope the idea could be helpful to you.
Sincerely,
Neil Beresin
