Will Mr. Owen Survive the Principal's Reading Challenge?!

It is that time of year again...time for the Principal's Reading Challenge here at Summit Elementary.  The Principal's Reading Challenge has become somewhat of a tradition at our school and this year is no exception.  The challenge kick-off assembly on Tuesday, January 11th could be heard throughout the halls of Summit Elementary, as students cheered for their favorite Survivor Team.  This year's theme is Survivor Summit complete with team challenges, immunity, and videos!  If Summit Students reach their goal of 250,000 reading minutes then Mr. Owen will be voted off the island.  He will have to spend the morning of February 10th on the top of Pikes Peak, surviving with nothing but the bare essentials!  While Mr. Owen is away, the teachers and students will have the freedom to decide how they want to plan their morning around fun reading activities!  So parents, teachers, and students, gear up to survive!  Start reading every day to reach our goal and send Mr. Owen to THE TOP OF PIKES PEAK!

Miles Visits Summit!

On Dec. 9th, at  2:30 pm the Summit Students celebrated Fuel Up to Play 60 with our own Fuel Up to Play 60 with Miles assembly. Fuel Up to Play 60 is a nutrition and physical activity program launched by the National Dairy Council and the National Football League and provided locally by Western Dairy Association and the Denver Broncos. Fuel Up to Play 60 encourages kids to get up and play" for 60 minutes a day, and "fuel up" with the food groups kids don't get enough of -- low-fat and fat-free dairy foods, fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Fuel Up to Play 60 with Miles is a fun, interactive, 30-minute educational assembly. The program included Miles, the official mascot of the Denver Broncos, who is "live," interacting via video with a Denver Broncos football player, a registered dietitian, and cheerleaders.

Summit Singers on the Go-By Cypress Kalaman-Valdez

Even though Summit Singers practice at school in the music room, their voices could be heard all over the community during the holiday season.  The season began with a holiday debut at the Summit in Divide Fair, right here at our school. Miss Baker leads this group of singers, teaching them new songs and how to sing in different voices.  This talented group sings everything from Christmas Carols to contemporary music. The students meet on Wednesdays in the music room to practice their singing. If you are interested in becoming a Summit Singer, please see Ms. Baker for more information.

The Giving Tree
By: Natalie Graber
To all of you who gave to the Giving Tree! The school was able to distribute food baskets and warm clothing to Teller County families who were in need of a little extra help during this holiday season.  Thank you for your kindness and caring during this time of year.  The Giving Tree is an annual Summit Tradition that is sponsored by Summit Student Council and has been a very successful way of helping our community

Pet Tip from Bryson Cox-One way you could care for your pets is to purchase a heater for your pets' water bowls and a lights for your dogs' houses, and even a doghouse heater.  Help your pet stay warm and toasty during the winter months!

Kids for Critters

Think about your pet during the holidays and cold weather..........

                                                            By Katie Baker

                                                           Fourth grader Summit Elementary

~ 4th graders have grouped up and learned about 'Kids for Critters', a caring business for animals who have no homes. During the winter, more and more people are letting their furry friends go, without thinking about how much care they need for their pet. There are also homeless animals that are strays and need special care.

In our fourth grade study, we read the book, The Market Square Dog, by James Herriot about a dog that has no home.   In the story, it shows how a dog has to beg on the streets for food.  As it wanders in the countryside it gets hit. Then, a young man finds him and brings the dog back to town and to the veterinarian, James Herriot who fixes him. Later on in the story, a young police officer thinks of how the dog doesn't have a home and takes care of the dog. The theme of the story is how important it is to keep and take care of your pet and never let them roam.   Even though we are not in the English countryside, the animals in Woodland Park and Divide need special care, especially with our harsh winters.

Kids for Critters

By Kourtney Cox                                                                                     Fourth Grader Summit Elementary

To add to the many businesses around Woodland Park and Divide, this year,  fourth graders at Summit Elementary created their own holiday business.   Our service learning project helps animals in need by donating profits from our business to local shelters.  To start the business, we learned about economic terms :  entrepreneur, producer, consumer, natural, capital, and human resources, opportunity cost, scarcity, net and gross profit, supply and demand.

The fourth graders  have learned a lot about how to make products for homeless animals, and some of our products included:  puppy pizzas, pillows, blankets, ornaments, bird feeders, cat fishing poles.  In January they will donate the profits to various shelters to celebrate the agencies who support animals in our community.

Hiking Corner
If you love hiking or snowshoeing, you are in luck!  You are fortunate to live an area where there are endless hiking and snowshoeing trails, complete with beautiful scenery and exciting views.  Mueller State Park offers trails ranging in difficulty, for all hiking abilities, from easy to difficult.  The Crags is a great trail for hiking or snowshoeing, with amazing views and interesting rock formations.  Devil's Playground is another local hike that offers steep terrain, and an elevation gain of 1,300 ft or more if you go up the west side, near the Crags Campground (elevation gain of 2,680 ft.).  It is a great place to hike or snowshoe, with several great photo opportunities along the trail.  Always remember to tell someone where you are going hiking and when you will return.  In fact here are several safety tips for hiking in Colorado:
*  Never go alone, invite a buddy
*  Always pack plenty of water and healthy snacks
*  Take a first aid kit in your pack
*  Take sunblock and a baseball cap
*  Have an adult pack waterproof matches, a knife, a compass, and a mirror
*  Pack a whistle in case you get separated or lost
*  Pack appropriate clothing for the fast changing weather in Colorado: gloves, hat, raincoat, warm socks, etc.
*  For long hikes it is a good idea to pack survival gear.
Remember hiking is a great form of exercise but it is always better to be safe than sorry.

For more information on kids' hiking trips, what to pack, and how to stay safe, visit www.livestrong.com.

Cooking Corner
For an easy after school snack simply gather together the following ingredients:
Corn or flour tortillas
Shredded Cheese (your favorite kind)
Chili Powder

Place the cheese between the tortillas and sprinkle a little chili powder on the cheese.  Place in microwave for 30-45 seconds, or lightly brown in pan over medium heat.  Once cheese is melted let cool for a few seconds and cut with a pizza cutter into triangles.  You can dip in your favorite dip or dressing for an additional treat!
