News from the Principal
Dear Parents and Community members,

We need your help!

Woodland Park, Teller County and Woodland Park Middle School are wonderful places to live and go to school.  An important part of what makes this a great place is the people that live here and their involvement in the community.  At the Middle School, we have a large number of events, activities and committees that require the assistance of a group of volunteers.  Our volunteers work in classrooms, with individual and small groups of students, on committees and with groups of other parents supporting our teaching staff and students.  This year our Caring and Active Parents group (CAP) is having a hard time filling all of our volunteer needs.  Without enough volunteers it is difficult for us to offer all the learning and extra-curricular opportunities to our students and staff at the same frequency and high level that we have in the past.  We need your help delivering these opportunities.  Volunteering is easy.  Just go to the Woodland Park School district web site at http://wpsdk12.org select Woodland Park Middle School and then click on the CAP button at the top.  This will take you to the CAP website where you can find information about CAP and a variety of volunteer opportunities.  Many of these opportunities are in the evenings or simply involve the preparation of food.  You can volunteer as much or as little as you like.  Our school is a much better place when our parents and community are involved.

Volunteer and help our students learn and grow!

Thank you,
John Jamison

Chorus
Great things are happening for the performing arts in Woodland Park!  On Friday, September 25th Dr. Ryan Holder, Assistant Director of Choral Studies at Northern Arizona University, came to work with the choirs in the middle school and high school.

Dr. Holder is an up and coming collegiate conductor who has received degrees from Southern Oregon University, the University of Northern Colorado, and recently earned his Doctorate of Musical Arts from the University of Miami.  Dr. Holder worked on developing our student's musical interpretation, tone quality, and other aspects of choral technique.  Since his visit we have noticed a measured improvement in our singer's musical development.

We feel very privileged to have had a collegiate clinician take time to help the choirs of Woodland Park.  We would like to thank Woodland Park School District for helping us provide this unique learning opportunity for our students.  We look forward to bringing in more collegiate conductors in the future.

Band
Jazz I, at the middle school, has been selected to perform at the Colorado State Music Educators Convention in January at the Broadmoor Hotel. They were selected through audition and inside sources say they were "by far" the best middle school/junior high band that auditioned!
The jazz band is looking for venues to perform in. We have about ˝ hour of music ranging from funk to a ballad to slow and fast swing. If you know someone or a group that might like us to perform for them please let me know or have them get in contact with me. Thanks!

 MarineLab2009MarineLab June 2010

After a successful trip this past summer,  MarineLab chaperones Leah Bean, Caleb Kettler, and Mindy Wiley are at it again.  Twenty student travelers have been selected for the 2010 trip, which will land them in southern Florida for 8 days studying and interacting with aquatic ecosystems.   Participants at the MarineLab institute will be busy learning about and snorkeling around coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove forests.  In addition, this year's group will have a chance to visit Key West's Turtle Hospital to learn more about Florida's sea turtle rehabilitation efforts.  To participate in MarineLab students must be a 7th or 8th grader and need to submit an application.  6th graders, start saving your money for June 2011!  For more information, feel free to contact the MarineLab chaperones at ckettler@wpsdk12.org
Book FairBook Fair Logo
We encourage parents to stop by before or after your Parent Teacher Conferences and view the hundreds of books for sale. 100% of the profit from the fair goes towards purchasing more fun books for the library.

Teachers will also have "wish lists" of books that they would love to have donated to their classrooms to help in the education of your children.
Thank you for your steadfast support!
Classroom News
All Stars
This quarter has been a whirl-wind of work for the students of the All Stars.  It is hard to imagine that so much got done in 7 weeks of school.  In Language Arts, students have concentrated on reading short stories this quarter and learning how to pick out the literary elements.  They have then used those literary elements to write their own short stories.  In Science the students have talked about the parts of a cell and worked on labs that show them how the scientific method works.  In Social Studies, the exploration and settling of America has taken up our class time, ending with the Revolutionary War this quarter.  In Math Class, the students have been working on integers and graphs.  On November 2, the students who are eligible will be going bowling for their quarter "reward" trip.  The All Stars Teachers are looking forward to continuing a productive school year with our 7th graders.

Catamount Team CAT Trip
On October 8th, the Catamount Team had a great Field trip to USAF Academy and Mining Museum.  They learned about the USAFA Campus. Toured the Visitor's Center and Chapel. And ate lunch at Arnold Hall.  Mr Alger and Mr. Benjamin played several students in foosball and destroyed them.  The kids learned about mining operations in Colorado and panned for gold. An enjoyable and educational experience!

Phyical Education
It has been a great start to the year so far. The attitude and work ethic of our students has been excellent. We started off with fitness diagnostics using the Fitnessgram program. We should have the results sent to parents within the next few weeks. Our first unit was Ultimate Frisbee, which is a very popular outdoor game using only a Frisbee. Unfortunately the weather interfered a little, but we got through it. With the unsettled weather we decided to stay indoors and work on our racquet unit. The students were able to choose between Table Tennis (Ping Pong) and Pickleball (Indoor tennis). So far the effort has been really good.We work everyday on the Healthy Fitness components, Cardiovascular Endurance, Muscular Endurance, Muscular Strength, Flexibility, and Body Composition. We will retest our students at the end of the semester and see how far they have progressed. Look for a printout at the end of the semester to see how far your child has progressed. Any questions email us at jmeins@wpsdk12.org  or smartinex@wpsdk12.org. Thanks and remember to move everyday for a healthier life.

Club Happenings

STUCO
Student Council has been going strong for a month.  So many things are happening!  The WPMS STUCO had a float in the Homecoming Parade, put together by the Float Committee.  The Red Ribbon Committee has been working on educational and fun activities to enlighten our middle school students about the hazards of tobacco, as well as other harmful chemicals.  The Student Activity Committee has been planning out their videos to highlight different clubs and teams throughout the year, rather than do the usual "Pep Rallies."  The Staff Appreciation Committee started the year with treats for the entire staff, and helped the librarian, Mrs. Walter, put together a Staff Panther Café.  The Wellness Committee had their first taste test of the year, allowing students during their lunches to taste a Pear-Apple and a Kiwi.  The WELCO will also be involved with implementing healthy activities during our dances.  The Dance Committee has been planning the annual Halloween Dance on October 30, with all the "fixins'" to make a memorable occasion.  Just an FYI: the Halloween Dance will run from 4:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., to allow students to go to the Middle School dance and then to the High School Varsity Football Game. The Green Committee is planning a contest between the grades to collect the most aluminum cans and "Fill the Pod"

School of RockBookclub
Our First session of School of Rock ended Oct. 14th.  The next session will start Nov. 3 through Dec 10 look for details coming home with your kids.  The kids have learned about rock-n-roll music and can play a few songs as a group.  Using acoustic and electric guitars, we've covered chords, strumming techniques and a few riffs from popular artist such as Hendrix to little known artist like the Ventures & Iron Butterfly.  There are definitely some budding rock-n-roll stars out there in the community. School of Rock students this session were:  Andy Yoreo, Aven Ferguson, Chelsey MacDonald, Kelsey  Harmon, Sarah Bosch, Bailey Taylor.

Drama Club
Play PosterThe Woodland Park Middle School Drama Department is pleased to bring you a classical tale all ages will enjoy.  Join us for "The Emperor's New Clothes".  See "Patty", the Tailor, scheme her way into the palace and into a huge fortune!  Students in grades 6-8 perform this magical tale that is directed by Ryan Schultz and Sara Lee.

WPMS Drama is a self-sufficient club.  All scripts, sets, costumes, and props are paid for through the generous contributions of our audience members.  A concession will be available featuring home baked goods, juice, and coffee.  DVDs of the performance, including scenes from our rehearsals will be for sale for $10.  Thank you for your continued support.

Book Club
Book Club OctThe Middle School library just kicked off our third year of lunchtime book clubs, which brings together parents and kids who love to read!  We have over 70 kids participating in a book club this year.  Special thanks to our wonderful parent volunteers: Alice Varalli, Diane Dillinger, Doreen Ward, Kathy Dixon, Neil Levy and Bill Brown.

Cross Country

The Cross Country team had a fantastic season this year.
The Boys "A" team started off at our home meet in 4th place and worked hard to finish 3rd place at the rest of the meets and finished 3rd at the league meet. Chase Fish and Jack Seaton both finished in the top 20 at league, and Zeb Gross finished in the top 10. Marcus Rodholm was the boys League Champion.
Even though official team scores aren't kept for the "B" team our boys consistently finished in the top two , even finishing first a couple of times. Austin Doby, Keegan Harmon, Logan Herberger, Brian Crandell, Noah Nieman, Neil Oppedal, and Sam Hopfe all finished in the top 20. Austin, Keegan, and Logan all finished in the top 10.
Our Girls finished 3rd at league after finishing 2nd in most of the meets this year. With the flu going around it hit some of our girls at the worst time.  Brianna Austin,  Kelly Johnson, and Savannah Ebert finished in the top 20 while Anne Fisher and Grace Hopkins finished in the top 15.
Our girls "B" team consistently finished in the top 3 in the league. Jessica Marshall and Myrrhiah Perkins both finished in the top twenty with Jessica Marshall finishing in the top 10. Sarah owen and Andi Gerleman were not far behind.
We are looking forward to watching our 8th graders run next year for the High School and are excited about all of our returning 7th graders next year.

Football
The seventh and eight grade football teams concluded their seasons last week. The players fought hard everyday at practice and played well each game. The coaches were extremely impressed with the level of dedication and hard work displayed throughout the season. The respect and sportsmanship displayed on the field was top notch as the players demonstrated high levels of integrity and positive attitude. In the eyes of their coaches, the players showed significant growth not only as football players, but also as young adults. One of the many highlights of the season was seventh grade's big victory over rival Cheyenne Mountain!
Also a big thanks goes out to the football managers: Rachel Taylor, Amber Dudley, Becky Seib, and Briana DiBari. Their hard work and dedication helped the team have a great season. We hope that all of the students will continue with football in the future! Go Panthers!
